Home Blood Glucose Testing for the Visually Impaired
Roche Pharmaceuticals has developed a voice-guided system that allows visually impaired users to perform blood glucose tests at home. The system also assists in insulin identification. Roche's Accu-Chek Voicemate provides verbal cues for inserting the test strip, applying blood, and removing the test strip, as well as a voice-provided blood glucose reading. The Voicemate can read and identify Eli Lilly brand insulin vials. Curved test strips easily guide fingers to the blood application site.
The Accu-Chek Voicematecomes packaged with earphones, an AC adapter, a supply of test strips and lancing devices, and an instructional audiotape. The system is described as portable, however, if carrying space is at a premium the Accu-Chek Advantage meter can be removed and used independently of the voice unit. This system is beneficial for people with diabetes who have difficulty manipulating typical home-use blood glucose monitors.
