Mary,I live in Toronto Ontario(Canada) I use a Glucose Meter-It is called "Fast Touch",9.9 is Canada's =I don't know what the measure of USA is. Sorry,my mistake:Re:my meter:"One Touch Ultra". You should be able to get it at a discount. What city do you live in? The test strips are called "One Touch Ultra". Here in Toronto they are sold 100 of them,in a cardboard box,due to my Famous Players insurance drug policy(very good health care) I pay $5.00,if I didn't have this,I would be paying $100.00. My meter cost me $31.00. There is also a lancet:I use a super-soft touch pen, which I re-fill and it has settings:I use 3. For sensitive skin. You lance your fingers-side ones, for a couple of seconds, then get a reading. I do it 3-6 times day. These products made by Lifescan. I also use Alcohol Prep Pads,to test. Easier that way. One really good diabetic book:I've been reading for a couple of years:"A Touch Of Diabetes". Lois Jovanovic-Peterson-MD,Charles M.Peterson-MD,Morton B.Stone. Publisher:Chronimed. I'm certain it is still available. You might be able to order it off internet. Got to go now. Feel free to ask anything. I'll help as much as I can. Yes,I'm type two. Been diabetic since October 1990. I am on Metformin(Glucophage)-4 times day,Diabeta,Avandia(twice morning) Monopril(blood pressure+protect my kidney function:have protein in urine)

Marc, I am new to the blood glucose checking. I don't understand your way of checking. How do you get the reading 9.9? Is this high or low? Is this a different type of glucose meter? My test strips are really high and I wondered if this is a better way of testing. Sorry to hear about you and your familie's health problems. If you are still there please reply. Thanks, Mary

Mary, thank you for the kind reply. Best wishes. I hope you get your blood glucose sugars under better control. I know how hard it is to do that. Due to alot of stress plus vertigo, and sleep disorders,my blood sugars are not in good control. I just woke up now;going to have some supper now. I'm so worried about my family's medical problems,so between constant film screenings,my energy level is not too great. I admit I ate a big lunch,(late in the day) before I left for lunch, blood glucose was 9.9. I had (as I mentioned past) two xrays:C Scan/MRI,to find out more concerning vertigo that I suffer from at night,if anyone doesn't think they don't have an effect on diabetic control,WRONG!! Because of some unknown condition in my spine, the results were not conclusive, though some doctor said I could have a tumor. Nothing more ever said about it. I am trying to get an appointment to find out where things stand. Between my sister's (Lupus,or something else that the doctors don't know,) and her dental surgery, plus my mother's severe allergic skin rashes,I'm under alot of stress. I'm doing all I can for supporting my family in their need for help. If anyone ever has had to deal with vertigo, and you have unstable blood sugars plus alot of asthma, then it's no joking matter. I had been given a new asthma drug, but I won't take it-raises blood sugars, plus liver problems. ("Singular") Anyone know more about it?

about warts. Last night I posted this question: I went to doctor for a checkup for diabetes. My finger was swollen and has a little white bump on it. xrays showed nothing in finger. Has anyone with diabetes had this problem? My brother has diabetes and he also has a white bump on one of his fingers next to the knuckle. Then some jokster wrote back that maybe I got a wart from my brother. Are you perhaps that jokster?

Dear Marc B. I hit the wrong button and it sent message before I was finished. The first test I had was 348. I have been to two diabetic classes at the local hospital and they really helped alot. I didn't mean to be offended by the person who made the wart remark I was really just shocked by it because I logged on hoping to find help and there that was about my brother. Later I read some of the other older posts and saw what the problem is. These people just need to be ignored. They have either never had a serious illness or they are going through a bad one now. To Marc and everyone else who is helping I say, THANKS!!!!!!!!!!! Let's keep the board going instead of having it closed. MARY

Dear Marc Bernstein, Thanks so much for your reply. The (wart in) my finger I think is not really a wart. I did'nt explain that it is not sitting on my finger it is in the finger and makes the skin stand up. The doctor did an xray because she thought there might be something in it but nothing showed up. She gave me an antibiotic and I go back on Thursday to have it checked. It is not swollen now but the (wart) is still in there. You asked about type I have. I have type 2 and found about it less than 2 months ago. My Glucovance has been increased from 1 a day to 3 a day now. My blood sugar test range from about 80 up to 180 which is a big improvement. The first test I h

Mary, warts are not always due to a viral condition, skin inflamation, allergies, see a skin specialist. Sometimes taking of certain hormone drugs or anti-biotics can also cause your finger/thumb to become swollen. Do you write down your medications-how many you take each day, hours, dosage? What about food? I have allergy to smoked meats and an anti-biotic..years ago,had serum virus-rash,hands swollen, took Atarax to help the pain and itching, because I couldn't sleep. It helped. Major side effect:makes you very sleepy. I had a big range of tests for arthritus:lots of blood work, many xrays. If you have a doctor who wants to do all those kinds of tests, good.

I have not been here for such a long time.. I went to my diabetic clinic this evening to see if I could go on a trial for some tablets to stop the blood vessels in your eyes from becoming damaged or leaking, the trials are to start early next year. The consultant who is looking after me told me I had I think he said Albumin does that sound right?, it is protein leaking from my kidneys into my urine, so I have to go onto tablets for the rest of my life I can not think what they are called, the tablets are suppose to protect the kidneys from this, but what I cant understand is why do they not give you these tablets before you develop this??? It seems to me whatever I do I just can not get this diabetes on the straight and narrow. I am getting really fed up with being a diabetic. :( Any suggestions?

Mary,I'm so sorry that you are being treated this way:it is beyond insulting,it only raises blood sugars.(blood pressure too) I have been on here (not lately-driven away by the same remarks that you weere subjected to. How can I help you? Are you taking any type of cortisone medication, what other pills (diabetic/are you type 2?) Have you been tested for arthritic problems? Do you have any food allergies or allergies to anti-biotics that might cause swelling? Please speak to your doctor,+ soon as possible. Good luck. I want to send my regards and greetings to all my friends on this chat,Faith,Herb,Fara,Jim,Marc W,CB,+ many others..I have not posted in a long while, have some serious medical problem(vertigo) which has been getting worse-had C-Scan/MRI years ago, nothing proven. Diabetes is ok. Herb,I think of you often,I hope and pray for your family. Faith,e-mail or phone me..happy to speak to you..Herb you too. Gordon,my best wishes. Greetings to John V. I am really worried about my sister, she now doesn't have Lupus-doctors don't know yet what it is..she has to have major dental surgery this week. As for my diabetes,it goes up and down. mornings are 6.3-8.9. sometimes 5.2. afternoons start going up-taking extra diabetic meds-scared. evenings it goes down, except in middle of night,I wake up feeling faint,3.1. My mother also has been suffering from severe allergic reactions-rashes,welts,don't know what is going to happen. She is on heart drug,Anafranil,I got her emergency appointment Tuesday with her skin specialist. All these things make diabetes more frustrating. Marc Bernstein.

Millie, the best I can explain 'dawn effect' is this. When your blood glucose levels goes down in the night, your body tries to compensate and then it over compensates and you will have a high blood glucose in the morning. Hope that helps. Herb, if you are still here, hope you and Jodi have a restful time. I know it will be hard, but I'll prayer to that end.

Since every single person who has commented regarding whether or not we should go ahead and go to the cabin has said that we should, we are leaving in just a few minutes and then will go to OKC straight from the lake on Thursday. We should be home some time next weekend barring any dificulties. The cabin has a phone so we will be able to stay in touch with OKC. Plus we will have the cell phone with us when we leave the cabin. The weather forecast is good with some rain. We are taking dominoes, cards, and mahjong, so let it rain. My sugars have been high, close to 300 for a while now. Maybe I can get it down at the cabin. Jodi is wound up like a 9 day clock. I sure hope I can get her calmed down some while we are there. You guys all be good and stay in control. Herb (Bear)

I have a question. My dad was just diagnosed with diabetes, and it's been tough on all of us because he's the cook *laughs* I know with the holidays coming up I can't give him my traditional gift of Turtles candy, and I was wondering, I want to try experimenting and making a kind-of turtles cookie that won't be harmful to him or his diet. I was thinking of doing something like a low sugar, low fat chocolate cookie and adding pecans to it... but I don't know where to find a recipe for a chocolate cookie like that...nor am I aware of whether pecans and a touch of caramel (or a suitable substitute) will be bad for him... Any suggestions?
