Herb, I'm always amazed at the
sugar power in just ordinary 2% milk. A halve a cup will do it for me if a get a
bit low. A whole cup will fix me up when more low than that.

FAITH: We
tried the peanut butter and crackers and had two problems with them. First I
liked them to much and could not seem to find the right stop button. Then my BS
would go way to high. Second the carbohydrate level holds my sugars up for to
long and I get my regular diet all screwed up. The tablespoon of honey brings my
levels up instantly and to eat it without any bread or crackers it is so sweet
that it is almost sickening. So I am not tempted to over do it, and it is very
short lived. Herb (Bear)

Herb, The best thing to bring mine
up has been peanut butter and crackers. Last night I just went home and ate some
raisin bran cereal. But that raised me up too high.

Hi, just back from the doctor's
office (a new doc who seems to know more about diabetes) and my EKG shows a left
ventricular strain. I'm scheduled for an echocardiogram in a few weeks. Anybody
have any experience with this sort of thing (the ventricle problem -- not the
echo)? The doc says it may be something that can be solved with a the
installation of a stent. Yikes! What does it all mean?

FAITH: What
do you do to raise yours when it gets low. We have experimented an awful lot
before arriving at what works best for me. Any thing with any carbohydrates in
it holds my BS up to long and then we get nervous about that especially if we
have over done it some. We have finally settled on honey. Nothing seems to work
as well as honey. One tablespoon of honey brings mine up almost instanly but
does not keep my BS up long enough to cause problems with my regular diet. I
still like my Lantus but did learn some thing about it this week end. It is not
as tolerant of minor discretions in eating habits as my other insulin was. Our
kids were down from Tulsa again this weekend and we celebrated Michelle's 12th
birthday. I ate a small piece of her birthday cake with some sugar free ice
cream and my BS was 256 4 hours later. At another meal we had home made chicken
noodle soup. I have always loved home made egg noodles. I ate two bowls and my
BS was 253 at bedtime and still 185 the next morning. With my old insulin my BS
would have gone up but not near that much. I guess it may be good that you have
to control a little better with this insulin. It'l keep you on your toes. Herb

I would
think that the restrictions on insulin dependent diabetics getting a CDL drivers

there having to be any discrimination present. There is a fellow on here by the

are some limitations on it. Maybe he will come on here and explain more than I
can. Herb (Bear)

MARK: My
kidneys failed while I was hospitalized for a major heart attack and a septus
infection caused by a splinter in the big toe. I was comatose at the time so I
don't know what the symptomes were. My kidneys came back at least partially. I
still have to measure my liquid ins and outs every day. If I drink insufficient
water or more than 1 glass of soda pop a day I get a persistent pain on each
side of my lower back. I'm on 80mg of Demedex and 80mg of Pottasium replacement
each day. The Demedex is a very strong diuretic. I don't know if this helps,
hope so. Herb (Bear)

Celiac disease: this is a condition
where the lining of the small intestine is damaged by eating gluten and similar
proteins (stuff like wheat, rye, oats, barley, and other grains including hybrid
grains such as triticale). The exact cause of the disease is unknown; some
research indicates it might be inherited but it could also be the result of an
abnormal immune response to proteins found in grains The intestines contain
villi which normally absorb nutrients. Celiac disease causes the villi to become
flattened and lose the ability to absorb nutrients. Weight loss, anemia, and
vitamin deficiencies may occur as a result of this. For a diabetic, this can be
a very serious disease.

Marc - I heard about the new pump
and am considering seeing if my insurance will ok me upgrading. I've had 'Ralph'
for 4 years now. But I need to wait till our personnel office finishes changing
our insurance carrier. It was suppose to come into effect today. Need to wait
till I get all my info in on it. I do adjust my basal raites 'once in awhile'.
Most of the time I leave it along and just control by boluses.

Faith...yep. once the site problems got taken care of there was no question.
The pump is much better for me. Although I still can't solve the early morning
problems. I think I drop and that is why I end up so high, but when I get up
even hour to test I never see a drop. Time for the 72 hour test again. Other
than that I couldn't be happier with it. Have you checked on upgrading to the
new pump next year? I was told the insurance might pay for upgrades if the pump
you now have is at least 4 years old. Puts my wait at a couple of years. The new
pump looks nice, smaller, waterproof. Check it out. When things get out of whack
for you, do you leave it alone to work itself out or start switching
rates?.......Marc

Jim & Faith: My doctor advised that
as we age our metabolism will naturally slow down. If I continue to eat the same
# of calories and don't increase my exercise, the tendency will be to gain
weight. My choice is reduce the calories or increase the exercise (or both). Ask
your doctor to check out your thyroid levels (via a blood test). Maybe your
thyroid is not functioning at 100%. Ask about interactions of the drugs you
take, too, especially if you see more than 1 doctor. Sometimes the 2nd or 3rd
doctor may not know all the meds you are taking.

It seems that broken bones will
reqire using more milk daily (for calcium and vitamin D) An extra 2 cups will
add 16 gm protein and 24 gm carb. Sufficient magnesium will help absorption.
Synthesisation requires all synergistic substances. To the APs, this is basic
truth. Recovery will be slower where this isn't observed.
