I found this very
interesting. Glandular,... many glandular diseases can be started by auto-immune
responses. That is all-ready decided in the embryo. The developing embryo has
three layers of cells; the ectoderm giving rise to skin and nerves, then the
mesoderm, it becomes muscles, blood, arteries, veins and the heart. Now watch
this!!! The third layer, the endoderm gives rise to the lining of the stomach
and intestines and related glands and organs, including, YES the pancreas,
thyroid gland and gastric parietal cells. It appears that the immune systems of
some people, for reasons yet unknown, attack RELATED tissues. These are referred
to as clusters. So, we have to watch out for thyroid disease and adrenal gland
disease and any other related gland diseases as well. Not everybody reacts to
this but many do. Something to think about. JOHN V.

people experience stomach cramps, pain, and other problems. This is a web site
address where you can read more about it:
http://my.webmd.com/drugs/asset/uspdi_patient/a_to_z/G You'll need to scroll
down about 1/2 way on the page to find Glucophage. It's by Bristol Meyer; they
are trying to phase it out for their new brand/drug, I think Glucotrol or
something like that. Apparently, now the generics can start manufacturing copies
of Glucophage and sell it cheaper. Hope this helps!

my lenses changed when this whole cycle began but at each surgery they would say
come back in 3 months and we will see if you can get new glasses yet. At each 3
month cycle I would require additional surgery and begin a new waiting cycle.
Finally at this last surgery the Optomologist said wiat 6 weeks and go get your
glasses. I knew I could not see but found out at the eye exam that my eyes were
20-400 & 20-600. I'm not sure whether the new glasses are something special
or not but I've never heard of any one being prescribed like this before. The
first pair will have 3 lenses and will focus from the end of my nose to about 10
feet. The second pair will have 4 lenses and will focus from 10 feet out to
infinity. The eye doctor explained that they will require some getting used to,
expecially the 4 lense pair. But after not hardly being able to see for 2 years
I am convinced that I can get used to all most any thing. Herb (bear)

CB: I have
repeatedly said that nutrient balance should be encouraged for maximum benefit
to the body. Some nutrients are harmful when injested in excess on a continuing
basis. This is the falacy of many fad diets. They are effective in the short run
at the expense of balance in other necessary nutrients. Did anybody see the
Jenny Craig interview on NBC this morning. I am not familiar with her diet plan
however I would guess that balance is not emphasized. She had a severe muscle
disorder in her jaw and face. CB has been emphasizing the need for increased
protein where muscle loss or needs for muscle building are necessary. My concern
is for knowledgeable understanding of the necessity, actions and interactions of
all nutrients. We, as diabetics, are the worlds worse to latch onto some
cure-all scheme that will eliminate the need for willpower and understanding. If
we took one tenth of the money we spend on overkill or fads, we could pay for
the books, software, etc. to become very nutritionally wise and understanding.
We are great readers and talkers but refuse to spend 20-40 bucks for a used
nutrition textbook at a college bookstore. Jim Fultz: I don't know of any
specific vitamins that are diabetic oriented. This is mainly because none of us
are playing on a level field. CB's needs are different from mine, yours, fara's,
Marc W.'s, Marc B.'s and all others. Each diabetic on here and off has different
nutrient intakes and utilization. For instance, how much of Fara's immune system
was used during her recent nearly catastrophic episode. Nutritional
simplification is dangerous and can't be done on a blanket basis. Each one of us
is different because of our intake and usage. My best advice is to learn what
you need to know nutritionally and use this knowledge to understand your own
needs. While checking, several vitamins can be taken in excess to one's harm.
Others are influenced by conditions such as pregnancy. Self education is
becoming more important each day with the changes occurring in the medical care
field (HMO, etc). I think that I have an adequate understanding of my personal
needs but of no one elses. Please be careful of curealls and fads, they are
dangerous. Gordo.

Fara: Marc, All veggies do not convert at the same rate or amount of glucose
resulting. Starches and root vegetables produce the most glucose. Green and
yellow vegetables pruduce less glucose primarily because of their branched
structure and the amount of fiber contained. Fiber is not digested and it slows
down the conversion and uptake of glucose. I have yet to discover how to make a
table of values on this site or in e-mail. I will list many vegetables giving
the Carbohydrate value from a 6 ounce serving (more or less to cma) Chinese
Cabbage= 2.7 grams; Asparagus = 3 grams; Bok Choy = 3.7 grams; zucchini = 4.1
grams; Broccoli = 4.7 grams; La Choy mixed veg = 6 grams; cauliflower = 7 grams;
summer squash = 7.3 grams; tomato = 7.8 grams; mushrooms = 7.9 grams; leaf
spinach, boiled = 9 grams; moo goo gai pan = 9 grams;sprouted mung beans = 10.1
grams; green beans = 13.4 grams; carrots = 17.2 grams; green peas = 24 grams;
black eyed or crowder peas = 35.5 grams; flesh only of baked potato = 36.6
grams; ear corn = 37 grams; sweet potato, flesh = 42 grams; this is boiled
without any additives for flavor or seasoning. Much can be accomplished with a
few sprinkles of some of the herb mixes available at Walmart Super stores. Marc
B. You benefitted due to your proximity (post) to my old friend Fara. I hope
everybody benefits from this in some way. I realize that a 6 ounce serving of
some vegetables makes quite a pile but at least you have the numbers for larger
servings and even I can divide by 2 or 3. This is grams of carbohydrates and not
carbs as per you carb counters. Now you do the arithmetic. Nothing is absolutely
free except distilled water but as you can see, some are very low in
carbohydrates. Also remember, vegetables are the only source of fiber aside from
supplements. There are many very good nutrients in a lot of foods. This is why
balance should be emphasized in good nutrition. From the above numbers, many
different vegetables can be used in satisfying quantities to permit a proper
balanced diet for any degree of physical activity from CB down to some of out
nearly immobile diabetic family. We all need different amounts of a variety of
nutrients to help our partially incapacitated bodies to function to its maximum
efficiency. As Bambi so aptly put it the other day, our machine needs the best
care we can give it. Gordo

Toad: Green
and yellow veggies are good for several reasons. The fat is what you add in
preparation. They are good for many minerals and vitamins depending on the
preparation. Fifty pounds weight loss in 6 weeks is far too fast. Most wieght
loss programs are built around 1 1/4 to 2 # per week. Unless much of it was
stored water, after looking at what your said you eat, I would agree with CB's
way of thinking that much of your weight loss was from muscle loss which can be
harmful. There are very small amounts of protein in veggies and fruits. However,
cold water fish are an excellent source of both protein and essential
polyunsaturated fatty acids necessary for LDL cholesterol removal from the
cells. Skinless breast of chicken and turkey (roasted or broiled) also provide
good protein. Milk is also a good source of protein however you have to watch
the sugars. Soy milk has almost as much protein, less than half the
carbohydrate, and an excellent balance of polyunsaturated and mono unsaturated
fats mixed with tolerable saturated fats. One necessary nutrient that gets
shorted on many weight loss plans are a balanced blend of fats of which some are
essential ( the body can't synthesize them). We need a minimum or 15% of our
calorie intake to be a balance of fats. Veggies are considered by many as a free
food, depending on the preparation. The unbranched starches like potatoes,
beets, sweet potatoes, corn, carrots are viewed differently. These must be
selected for other nutrients not available elsewhere. Tofu is also an excellent
source of protein however preparation is very important. If fried, use only a
light spray of canola oil. I hope this helps you. Gordo

Toad - I realize you
addressed your question to Bambi but can I give it a shot? No pun intended.
Protein comes in many forms. Cheese, milk, legumes, nuts (however they have a
high fat content), chicken, fish, pork, beef, turkey, etc. Start by reading the
labels on different foods. You will find many foods that have some protein in
them. Minimal requirements of protein for sedate females is .8g/kg of body
weight. An eight ounce glass of skim milk has 8g of protein & 13g of
carbohydrates. 1 egg has 8g of protein and 1g of carbs. The difference between
the two is the added carbs in milk, which need to be counted in your daily
allowances. The fruit: Usually the equivalent of about 1/2 c of most fruits
equals 15g of carbs. A dietician to teach you the beginnings of carb counting is
a great benefit. This whole dietary things seems overwhelming at first but
really does become second nature after a while. Keep asking question until you
understand it. Your not a bother.

Bambi, Thank you. Thank you.
You're the first voice of reason I've been about to understand. If you wouldn't
mind another question? I very rarely eat red meats. It is honestly hard for me
to put them in my mouth. Eggs turn my stomach and it's the quickest way for me
to empty my stomach there is. Can I eat more steamed (and boiled) green veggies
at a meal to make up for the protien of the meat? I'm not trying to be
difficult, honestly. I've been trying (against Dr. orders) to walk a little. I
fell at work in July and blew my right knee and to stand or walk for more than
10 min. leaves my lower leg and foot numb and freezing. So I am basicly walking
from neighbor's porch to porch up the street three or four houses and back. :+)
Also, can you tell me if fruits are out? I was eating a cup of fresh
melon/apple/banana for breakfast with a slice of wheat toast and my coffee. I
tried to eat cheerieos or rolled oats but that shoots my BT # up into the 200's?
Sorry to be such a bother. I feel childish after reading the posts and realizing
I'm one of the few here with so little knowledge. Thank you again.
