Will agree that CB has far greater knowledge regarding nutrition, diet, and exercise than most people, and sadly, many medical professionals. However, more often than not he is unable to communicate this information WITHOUT being offensive! If he thinks the way to get people to listen to him is to belittle and offend, he is woefully mistaken. I have occasionally seen him post with sensitivity, but again, more often than not, he chooses to fire words as weapons.

CB- I thought you might be interested in this. Recently when I saw my doctor I showed him one of your posts on the same theme as you have posted today and in the last few days. He said that you were right on the track. He was not offended at all when I related how you said a lot of doctors are not trained as well as they should be on nutrition. He urged me to take the very type of vitamins you have mentioned. Thanks for all the worthwhile info you give us. I wish I could state I could do the things you can in exercise. Keep at us!!

Listen idiot, I did not say to quit the CDE, nor did I say stop seeing doctors! You need to know your body and listen to it so you know exactly what you need nutritionally. Ya know what? I can still do heavy squats at over 50 years of age. I am not suggesting EVERYBODY do this, although I like the thought! What I am saying is diabetics tend to be undernourished in lacking sufficient vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients. Complications can force undernourishment. Apart from those, I will stick with what I said.

FAITH: You have made the right decision with regards to your Mother. The care of Alzheimers patients is a very specialized field of care giving. And despite a families love for the patient they seem to be the least capable of providing the level of care that the patient requires. There are so many of our elderly that have this disease that in the OKC area there are 2-3 nursing homes that specialize in the care of Alzheimers patients. I don't know if you have any in the San Antonio area but it might be worth checking into. CB: I failed to mention in my post earlier that while we were in OKC we went to my monthly amputee support group meeting. Our speaker was a lady that teaches Yoga. I could not do any of the standing or the floor exercises but was able to do all the seated stretching and breathing exercises. Despite all her assurances that Yoga is a low impact form of exercise I was a little sore afterwards, but felt a lot better. Jodi and I are going to get a book and start doing some of the exercises on a regular basis. When I was repairing the fishing rods for the Tulsa grand kids for the trip to Greenleaf I realized how weak my hands are. They would literally cramp after I used them just a little. I have ordered one of those hand squeezers to exercise them some. With the boys help I am getting ready to build a work bench in the garage where I can once again tie flies, wrap fishing rods, and reload ammunition. It would be a shame if my hands would not let me do these things. I will have to get one of those round lights with the magnifying lens in the middle to mount on the bench in order to see what I am doing. You mentioned potasium (SP) in one of your recent posts. I take 8 big horse pills of it evry day to replace what I lose due to the 8 pills of Demedex that I take to insure that my kidneys stay flushed out. Herb (Bear)

Thanks for the comments regarding my mother. To 11:13:13, don't you think that I would love to have my Mother with me, but my mother-in-law is 80 years old and barely takes care of herself, much less be able to take care of someone else. One of my nieces was wanting to take care of Mother at her home, but after much prayer and soul-searching, I told her that just wouldn't be feasiable. That is a 24-7 job, and mother is pretty much convined to a wheelchair and is starting to get very hard to handle. I just pray she can go home to the Lord soon, she would not like the kind of life she has now. Sometimes I can sense she is so frustrated and tired, but she is not able to communicate that. I never dreamed we would have to face something like this. You all take care and have a great day.

Faith: My husbands grandmother lived in a nursing home for 5 yrs. with Alzheimers' and was cared for by his widowed mother for 3 yrs before that. It's a very taxing job. We tried to get mom to have her cared for in a skilled facility when MeMa (That's what we called her) got irrational and started throwing punches when she got frustrated or disoriented. It took her falling and breaking her hip to get her in a facility. I know it sounds cold, to those not living in this situation. But it truly takes skilled caregivers to care for these patients on a 24 hr. basis. MeMa finally passed away last month at age 87. Mom & I went to see her the day before. She had stopped eating because she didn't know how to chew. Thank God while she was still lucid she signed DNR and no extrodinary means papers so she didn't have to suffer the indignity of being fed with a tube. It was very sad indeed when she passed. But our grieving really had already been done a long time ago when she didn't recognize us anymore. There was relief that her pain was ended and the confusion and fog lifted when she went to be with our heavenly Father. You hang in there and just keep on the nursing facility to make sure things are done right by your Mom. We had to make a report with the State Ombudsman to get them to start changing Mema's diapers more often and not just when it was convenient. She got much better care when they saw we weren't going away, and stayed on top of things. Stress is a problem for B/S for sure...it's sure been an indicator for my state of mind, and a wake up call to just lay it on the Lord and let him carry it for me. It works when I remember to do so. Anyway, 4th day on Actos and my B/S was 154 2 hrs after dinner. It was a rehearsal for Thanksgiving. I had turkey and stuffing and gravy and squash. All withing very moderate amounts. Very satisfying and not the bloatedness of being overstuffed. I've been Carb counting (starting today) and hopefully it will get easier as I adjust to it. I was surprised how satisfied I was after lunch and had to remember to eat a snack because I didn't feel too hungry but didn't want that starving feeling by supper. I've been eating 45 cabs per meal. I'l let you know how it works out. Gordo: Are you back in town? Well I gotta run get my dtr. some cold medicine so she can go to bed.... Nite all Connie

Faith: please forgive the AP, but I just wanted to comment on your last post. I hope things at your Mom's nursing home improve very soon. Alzheimer's is such a devastating disease and the patients deserve the same dignity as everyone else. I feel for you because I've been there. My guess is someone will slam you for not having your mother live with you -- but the fact is, you are doing the right thing by having her in a controlled, monitored environment. Hopefully, the food and cleanliness will improve rapidly. I'm sure you will continue to advocate for her (and the other residents) well-being. It's a tough ride for the family, that's for sure.

Herb, you go man! You are, as Faye said, an inspiration to us all. Am still trying to get morning BG's down. My mother, who is in an assisted living facility because of Alzeheimers, is really on my mind. The worry I have for her is starting to really give me a lot of stress. Now, they have a young man working there as the cook, and he CAN'T COOK. Saturday he served them a slab of hamburger meat he called meatloaf, a slice of bread and sliced nearly raw potatoes with what looked like cheese-wiz poured over them. That was it! No salad, no vegies! Then last night when I went by to see her they were being served, two slices of bread, a spoon ful of crumbled up hamburger meat and a leaf of lettuce. Oh, some mayo and mustard. I could'nt believe it! So, this morning I called and talked to the new director. She said she was aware, and promised he would be gone soon. Can you imagine feeding seniors like that? I also complained about her rooms not being kept clean. Oh, how I wish I could bring her to my home and take care of her. But, I have to work and my mother-in-law already lives w/us. You all take care, will check back in later!

16:44:50 Renal problems? How severe? In cases of ESRD, your DE is right. You need to ask her when restrictions of these foods is called for. You have to be more specific. Ya know what, YOU are probably undernourished.

In response to the incompetent idiots who attacked my post, not all Diabetics have severe renal problems, therefore those who don't need not avoid those foods! Second, my comment about the personal trainer is true. Personal, I see my physical training and sufficient nutrient intake as a way to avoid serious health difficulties. Carotenes, for example, aid in healing. Pop a capsule of Theragran, you get little, if any. The body cannot absorb it! It is equally true that MD's DO NOT have a lot of nutritional training. Also, the doc should be followed in areas of insulin and oral meds. That, he or she DOES know. Tell you what APs, eat a diet of whie bread, a little milk, and margarine w/6 oz meat daily while avoiding carrots broccoli, spinach, cauliflower, oranges, tangerines, yams, squash, cucumbers, leaf lettuce, and tell me how you do!

I lost your e-mail as well as Connie's when I got my new computer. Hi to the rest of the gang!! I go for my next laser treatment Wednesday. I am not looking forward to it at all now that I know how it is done. The needle into the eyeball hurts like H---. I woke up at 1:30 the other morning shaking like crazy. My sugar had dropped to 52. It had never happened before and I was here all alone as hubby was in Virginia visiting his nephew and family with his sister. I took the portable phone in my bathrobe pocket and got some sweets, apple crisp, that my daughter had made, no juice in the house. I ate the crisp, made some toast and a glass of milk. Stayed up for an hour to make sure I was ok before I went back to bed. I know it scared me. I have been checking my sugars before I go to bed now and if I am under 120 I have a glass of milk.

Why can't you, he, she, it, they, grant us just a little peace. I don't mind being referred to as Ma and Pa Kettle. They were very real down to earth people. I don't know about the "Friends" reference since I have never watched "Friends". But, I reserve the right to celebrate when some good things happen and nothing you can do will dull that for me. There has not been a whole lot of good things happen in our lives for a few years. We started out 4 years ago by losing a 6 year old grandson to a very rare genetic disease that runs in families. Now his mother, our middle daughter is in the final stages of the same disease and our youngest daughter has been diagnosed with it. 2 years ago I was given 2-3 years to live. Jodi and I vowed that we were going to do everything in our power to make memories for each other and for our kids and grand kids. I am a brittle diabetic, with congestive heart failure (42% of the function left)(70% of the pacing being done by the pacemaker) 90% arterial blockage in my right arm and left leg. I have rythm (SP) problems and have an ICD implanted in my chest along with the pacemaker to correct any rythm problems that may develop.I am losing my eyesight. I have 20/400 in my right eye and 20/600 in my left. I totally lost kidney function when in the hospital and the majority of it came back. With the kidney problems and the congestive heart failure I have to have my left leg wrapped with Ace bandages from the toes to the hip every day or it swells tremendously from the edema and develops the diabetic ulcers. We have to maintain a measured in and out on all of the liquid I consume and pass. My diet is considerably more restricted than most diabetics due to the heart and kidneys. Despite the fact that my height is 6 foot 2 inches I have always had short legs (31 inch inseam) and arms. With all the weight I gained when they put me on insulin in the hospital and all the liquid I retain I am huge. Consequently I can't reach my own butt to wipe when I have a bowel movement. If you truly want to experience something that is humiliating and degrading try having your wife do that for you!!! I have sleep apnea and have to sleep with a face mask on that provides a measured amount of air flow. And I have to sleep with my left leg (my only leg) elevated 12 inches higher than my body on a wedge pillow. This means that I have to sleep the entire night on my back. I can't roll over or move during the night. Believe me I am not asking for sympathy for any of these problems. But I do and always will maintain my right to celebrate when something good happens in my life. Also I know that there are some people on here that celebrate with me whenever this happens. AMEN!!! to 10:16 Doctors are NOT highly trained in nutrition, Neither are many rd's, seeing they can't relate to the demands of real life. Personal trainers I know have done a better job stabilizing diets for diabetics than the rds. Their charts are geared for the sedentary, but are less than ideal. Another tip: hungry between meals, mix organic greens together, including raw spinach. Add cauliflower, broccoli, and cherry tomatoes. Add an ounce or two of goat cheese for flavor. Use dressing of choice with a couple of whole wheat crackers. Filling and healthy!

Hi y'all. We got back last night from OKC. The drs. appointments went well, marvelous, fantastic, terrific, wonderful, fabulous, great, etc. etc. My 3 month average BS was 121 which thrilled the dr. He cut my Avandia from 8 mg a day to 2 mg a day and has replaced my insulin with the new Lantus, 40 units at bedtime. My Cholesterol (SP) and my triglycerides were all real good. The Opthomologist said my eyes looked better than he had ever seen them and was very complimentary about my sugar control. Jodi's pap smear and her mammogram were all normal and her doc doesn't want to see her for a year. I can't believe how busy we were while we were in OKC. In addition to the drs. appointments Jodi co-hosted a baby shower and we went to Beckie's boy friends birthday party. Believe it or not I actually played in a pool tournament at Slick Willy's. And OU beat Baylor!! The shower was for a girl who grew up with Beth. It never ceases to amaze Jodi and I how many of our kid's friends are not close to or do not have parents or grand parents. We seem to serve as surrogate parents and grand parents to a tremendous number of young people with whom we have no blood relationship. It has astounded us over the years to watch some of these kids reactions to our families traditions and customs since they have none. Greg brought a boy to our house for Thanksgiving dinner one year who had never eaten turkey and dressing. His parents were very well to do and travelled all the holidays. Danny had grown up on tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches plus what ever he could buy at a fast food restaurant with the money his parents had left for him to use. His almost unwillingness to try the Thanksgiving Dinner and all of its trimmings as well as his reaction to all the new flavors was sad. Herb (Bear)

Sabrina, while I was in the hospital (army hospital)last November, I had doctors, nurses, and medical students coming to see me and ask if they could look at my pump. They "all" had never seen a pump before or knew how they worked. The theory is talked about in medical school, as I was told, but not taught per se. There was one doctor from the Endo. dept who had seen them and know some about them. I do believe, as a whole, doctors do not, or are not able to keep themselves abreast of all the technology that is available out there. In my humble opionion, you sound like a good candidate for a pump. Why don't you ask around in your area and see if there is a clinic or doctor that would talk with you about the pump. They are expensive. If I didn't have insurance, I wouldn't have one. Keep that in mind.
