If you want to help by donating blood, but are turned down because of medications you are taking, ask the center if you can donate platelets. Some centers are equipped with machines that can filter platelets from whole blood. The blood is then mixed with a saline solution and pumped back into your body. Some machines require that you have needles in both arms, but some places have machines that work using only 1 arm. The process takes between 1 1/2 - 2 hours. There is some discomfort -- the saline solution is cold, so you'll be wrapped in blankets and often the staff will put hand warmers on your hands. This is safe as giving blood - your body begins reproducing platlets immediately and usually within 24 - 48 hours you are back to normal. Platelets are very useful for treating burn victims and one person's donation can help as many as a dozen people. So if you can't give blood, ask about giving platelets. Also, you can donate platelets more often than you can give blood. Just another way to help.

I watched the joy and elation of thousands of rescue workers today when 2 firefighters were extracted from the rubble. I asked my self what caused this out pouring of love and elation. The answer was simple. They are all brothers engaged in a common cause and who have a very high level of love and respect for each other. I had to ask myself if this is true why can we not achieve a similar level of respect on this board. We all have a common cause. The ultimate defeat of the disease diabetes should be our common cause. Yet we have posters who never offer any thing constructive or positive in the war on diabetes. They are at their happiest when they are creating dissention and chaos. I have to ask, are they really diabetics or are they just poor sick souls who delight in tormenting and deviling the poor sickies who have diabetes? Is there any thing we can do to help these poor souls achieve a happier life than they obviously have now? I am just so discouraged about this board and it's future I don't know what to do. The war of words here in the past,like that of between so many miidle eastern Nations(Israel,Egypt,Jordan,etc) have led to this kind of utterly insane and vile attack. Those whose lives were lost by these demented cowards,are heroes,always will be in my mind and heart. There are many people on this chat,as well as thousands of Americans,Canadians,Israelis(many who in the past,have sacrified their lives to fight for their love of Democracy!! The world is now a far different place. We all will feel much less secure,whoever we are,wherever we may go. For GOD'S Sake,Before It is too late,Let's all heed Herb's,Faith's,Jim's and my words of warning-I don't want a war. But unless we have control of this blasted terrorism problem,which is a bloody threat to us all,then we are headed for a time of terror and strife,which will affect all our lives,and we must have peace,between ourselves,and the rest of the world. With thousands dead and thousands putting their lives in harms way in an attempt to rescue a few how can we act this way. How can we be so disrespectful to the dead and the living who are trying to save lives. I am sitting here with tears streaming down my cheeks over what I am reading here. Granted I am already quite emotional over what I have been watching on the TV. Way into the night last night and all day today I have seen so many familiar faces there. Not familiar in the sense that they are friends of mine but familiar in the sense that I have seen them before. The haggard blank stare of fatigue, The firemen sleeping on the sidewalk, the quick shared cups of coffee, and the discouragement and disapointment that comes with the realization that no matter how hard or how long you work that you can not do enough. And the American flags everywhere. On the wall behind my computer is a picture of three of the fellows I was in Mexico City with, plus me, holding a Mexican Flag given to us by the President of Mexico. No matter how hard I try to control myself I just sit in front of the TV with tears running down my cheeks. Please - Please let's control ourselves and respect those that are gone and those that are putting their lives on the line. Herb (Bear)
