Boy I wish
the skunk was just a story. Apparently we are having quite a few of them coming
into town. The city has all their traps deployed and we are on a waiting list
for one. In the meantime we are keeping the puppy in the house and living with
the smell. The smell comes and goes. We are hoping that he will decide to move
on before really stinking up the place. Jodi is having some problems with her
sinuses and can't smell right now, lucky her. OU is ahead 24 to 10 Hooray!!!!

Herb &
all...tomato juice takes away the smell of skunk..if you hit it while it's
fresh. Just pour it on your dog if he gets "skunked"...I learned the hard way.
Also low in carbs if you're diabetic..you can enjoy your T.J., and something in
the acid will kill the skunk smell.

Figure out the
Carbs with your Palm If you dose your insulin according to the number of
carbohydrate grams you eat in a meal, then this is for you. If you don't...well
stick around anyway because a little education never hurt anybody. The other day
a patient introduced me to Calorie King software he runs on his Palm Pilot. He
simply typed in a food, he chose Onion Rings, and up popped a list of onion
rings with various serving sizes from fast food restaurants. We chose a large
serving from Burger King and it told us we were about to eat 66 grams of
carbohydrates. This is very helpful in removing the guess work we often face
when a nutrition label does not come with our meal. The program also includes
protein, fat and calories. Take a look....it may be just what you need to keep
your diabetes in check. Oh and if you don't have a palm, don't worry the
information also comes in a nice fat book. If
you are aware of other programs that assist people in managing their diabetes
please send us a link. Steve Deal, RN Diabetes One on One

GOOD GRIEF
CHARLIE BROWN: Jodi and I were sitting here with Jerry and Pearlyne listening to
the wind blow and the rain come down just waiting for it to blow thru so they
could go to their trailer without getting soaked. All of a sudden the living
room was filled with the repugnant odor of skunk!! All we could figure was that
he had decided to take shelter from the storm under our house. They were afraid
to try and go to their trailer thinking what would happen if they encountered
him on their way. Yet, they could not stay in the house as the smell was
nauseating Pearlyne. The smell and the rain let up a little and they made their
dash. Our bedroom is at the back of the house so Jodi and I went to bed. The
odor was not near as strong back there. I was laying there in bed and all of a
sudden I started laughing. Jodi demanded to know what was so funny. I told her
"Just think if this had happened when we had the house full of our domino
guests!!" She said "Herb Shaw you are not even funny!!" I called the cities
animal control guy a few minutes ago and they are sending some one out with a
skunk trap. I sure hope they can get him gathered up with out making him spray
evcery where. Blood sugar was 80 this morning at breakfast despite yesterday's
activities. Y'all maintain good control and stay healthy!!! Herb (Bear)

Well our
company all but the ex-boss and his wife are gone. They are going to stay over
the weekend and then go up to Ft. Gibson Lake for a few days. We had a great
time. We had 5 couples plus Jodi and I. Our friend Juan gave us half of a hog
that we picked up at the meat processing plant yesterday. We cooked a great big
ham and every one else brought covered dishes. We rotated teams and played men
against women at 2 different tables. We are under a severe thunderstorm warning
and tornado warining until 1:00 AM. Everyone was real impressed with how much
our kids had gotten done since the last one of these we had. (early spring) At
4:00 PM I remembered that I had not taken my insulin this morning. I pricked my
finger and checked my BS and it was only 158. I really thought that it might be
a little bit higer than that with all the snacking and eating that had been
going on. But, I had avoided all the carbs. See you all tomorrow!! Herb

Just a quick
note to amen what Jim had to say about sugar free products. A lot of sugar free
products contain healthy amounts of sugar under other names. Our dietician says
that if it ends in ose it is sugar, ie maltose dextrose lactose sucrose etc.
etc. One that we have found that drives my BS crazy that you often find in
"sugar free" produects is sugar alcohol. Like Jim says the only true indicator
is the total carbs. Got to go now, our company is going to start arriving in 2
hours and I have to take a bath and cut up a watermelon yet. Maybe I should cut
the watermelon first with my penchant for making messes. Herb (Bear)

Good
morning to all. You are so right Jim, when you say to look at the carbs on not
only sugar-free items but on all of your food items. Even different brands have
different numbers of the same thing. Take a can of tomatos, some have sugar
added and the label doesn't tell you unless you read the nutrient label I found
a very good whole wheat, tomato pasta at the local health food store here. They
also had spinich flavored. Both were great with just a shake of cheese on them.
As for yams, I had never thought of baking them until I went to Nashville and
they were on the menue at one of the places we went to eat. Now I will do them
at home instead of boiling them all the time. There are many ways to fix our
food so that it is appealing and tasty. Just use your imagination and don't be
afraid to add spices to what ever you cook. Just a shake of a spice can change
the flavor and make it more interesting. If you like fish, there is so much you
can do with it. I have baked the white flesh fish in tomatoes, orange juice and
slices of orange, in lemon pepper and lemon juice, or just plain herbs of all
kinds and a little liquid of your choice. You don't have to have the same thing
all the time. Do variety and you will be much happier with your eating habits. I
would be interested in finding out if anyone has noticed a difference in their
BS's when they drink orange juice with pulp in it as to without. I find that
when I drink the kind with the pulp my sugars will be much higher. This I
realized after keeping a journal of what I was eating at every meal. Have a
great day everyone!!! Faye

To
Newbie asking about Cetylmyristoleate: This is from www.webmd.com. Products
derived from bovine or other animal sources are being sold at health-food and
nutrition stores as cures for arthritis. Cerasomal-cis-9-cetylmyristoleate and
cetyl myristoleate (brand names CMO, CM Pure, CMPlus, CM Protocol,
Arthro-Balance) are two of these. The FDA, however, has no information about
these products as a treatment for arthritis. No recent published scientific
studies exist. The National Institutes of Health is not currently working with
cerasomal-cis-9-cetylmyristoleate. Beware of such products touted as cures when
no FDA approval has been granted.

Good morning
everyone. IT'S FRIDAY!!! It's been a short work week from Hades here at the
plant. Herb- Carnegie Hauling is picking up fast. Sent you a picture of my
family standing beside the truck. Lettering on the sides not done yet but won't
be long. Vinny- Thanks for the email. CB- Thanks for the addition of whole grain
pasta and yams. I should have added that but I figured between you and Gordo (Hi
Gordo) it would get on here. Newbies- Be careful when preparing your meals. Take
CB's suggestion of yams. If you candy them with brown sugar and butter they'll
taste great but devastate your BS at the same time. Another mistake people make
when diabetic is they buy "sugar-free" things to eat. Remember this: Sugar-free
does NOT mean carb-free. Check the total carbs. I was having really high numbers
about 13 months ago and couldn't figure why until I read the package of
sugar-free hot chocolate and found that the carbs were extremely high. Have a
good day. Jim
