Misty, thanks for the supportive words. I am now having my last drink-I'm
going to start fasting soon. My (yearly) exam tomorrow:1:00:PM. I have been
looking at carbs and sugar content of almost everything I am eating. Tested for
final time at 11:30:PM-my bs now much better-at 8.5. I think (since I have been
sick-though now all healed-since early Feb,I need to take some time off. I feel
like I'm suffering from bad emotional diabetic burnout! Also, since I'm the only
projectionist in my company's head office who is a diabetic,am concerned about
future of my job.(*esp with contract coming up for renewal-maybe just overly
worried-will try to be not too concerned-it won't help bs. Probably everything
with company/job will remain status quo.

Mark test alot- You may want
to ask your doctor about a pump. I had alot of same problems as you, now things
are much better and the D is not ruling my life. I know the pump is not for
everyone. I fought it at first. My doctor said to try it and if I did not like
it I could go back to shots. I am type 1 for 39 years. Love & Luck, Misty

Hi! Just wanted to
check in with you all. Marc B. it sounds like you are doing all the right
things, do not let the bs get you down, keep up the good work. Some times when I
get off track I will take 3-4 days and eat the same foods and qty to the tee.
This helps my body adjust and my meds do the work. I then can really see what
the problem is. It is tough but has worked for me. Love and Luck, Misty

I'm testing up to 8
times a day just trying to keep hglc down under 7.5 working better when I
combine scheduled shots with humolog chasers to keep high points down. But this
seems to be a losing battle. I can keep the aveage down but to get the average I
have some highs and very lows to contend with. Seems like I must have a build up
of insulin that is released from just the least amout of exercise. I can walk 4
blocks and drop my blood sugars over 100 points. Getting scary to walk
sometimes. I am ready for a cure as this stuff is getting old for me. I have
survived forty-one years (this april) with this type 1 and would at least
welcome a machine that would read my b.s. constantly. Ive heard of one that was
supposed to have come out several years ago but I yet to see it. gluco watch or
something like that. I can only hope it is soon. Need something other than my
constant vigilance to help me though the next 41 years. Things are better now
compared to the 60's but there is getting to be more and more of us with this
pissing disease and it makes you wonder if there was/is some virus bug getting
to some of us causing this. Will we ever know? Forgot how it was not to have
this, and even a cure would worry me now as I wouldm't know how to act. Just
venting....

Pam: As I
understand it, the oral medications encourage your pancreas to provide more
natural insulin for assisting your glucose in your blood to enter the receiving
cells for conversion into energy. It is also a known fact that some diabetic's
pancreas fail to provide natural insulin in sufficient quantities to do the job,
even with the help from oral meds. Your endo is the expert on your case history
and you should either rely on his(her) judgement or get another opinion from a
qualified professional. From the information that you posted, I do not think it
is a nutrition problem. Did your endo explain what conditions have changed
warranting this recommendation to start insulin? I would guess that he found
other evidence in your periodic blood work-up. Ask him, and don't delay. Get
back into control as soon as possible. Gordo

Pam,I understand what you are going through. I am taking Avandia too. I have
begun to take extra metformin and diabeta in efforts to get better control. I
last tested a half hour ago. Bs have gone down:10.1. I am really making an
effort to be as careful as I can. When I see ketones I'm getting worried. I know
about ketones when the blood sugar is low;but what I'm concerned about side
effects when it is high. I don't know if insulin is an option for me or not.

I am so happy to
see the chatboard back in service. Have checked off and on for some time now and
just about gave up. Just wanted to say hello and glad to see many of the same
people are still checking in. Went to Endo today and he wants me to start on
insulin injections. I have been taking amaryl and avandia for about two years
and suddenly not being in good control anymore. I am fighting against
injections. I am a coward and feel like a loser not being able to maintain blood
sugar levels with oral meds alone. Weight is ok, I think I get a lot of exercise
(tread mill everyday) and would welcome any suggestions. Thanks

I get better control?

splenda-cranberry-raspberry drink? I have it quite often. My
nurse/dietician(type one diabetic) advised me to have that. She is concerned
about use of asparatane.(nutrasweet)

JIM,....welcome back. What I have seen about alcohol is when you go to bed at
nights having been drinking, that if you get into a low, for whatever reason,
the liver that would normally compensates for that can't, because it is occupied
with working on the alcohol. That can be a very dangerous situation. But if you
also did eat sugary stuff it seems to be all-right. That way you wouldn't get
into the low in the first place. Alcohol per se, should bring sugar levels up.
But like so much with diabetes, not everything makes sense. I will have a look
at the Alcohol and Diabetes thingy. I enjoy one halve of a glass of red wine
with my dinner. JOHN V.

JIM: I had
never heard that. I was just operating on the info booze contains a lot of
sugar. In the hills of Eastern Oklahoma where stills are still quite common all
the little country stores have stacks of 100# bags of sugar. If any thing is
said they will tell you that the local people do a lot of canning. The year
around?? Herb (Bear)

It's also great to see messages from Fara, Faith, Sue, Scott, Vinny, Sam and
some of you others. We seem to be missing some of the regulars from a year or
two ago though and I hope things are still o.k. with them. The wildflowers are
in full bloom here in AZ. this year. The paper said it's the most colorful in
over 20 years. The heavier than usual moisture last fall has brought it's
rewards......Take care.........Gary

Herb- Actually that's
not entirely so. When a person drinks and don't eat, the alcohol slows down
their liver function of dumping glucose in the blood and their bs can fall like
a rock. This effect from the alcohol can stay with them for as much as 12 hours
after drinking. While it's best to not drink at all being diabetic, one should
compensate when doing so. ps- Sounds to me like this person goes low no matter
what though! Jim
