My friend's mother is diagnosed w/ IDDM and has been for many years. She has been non compliant and is stubborn about taking care of herself. Apparently her eyesight is getting worse *Not sure if she has a formal Diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy* and it also sounds like her circulation has decreased. She refuses to go to the doctor my friend is worried that her sugar level might cause her to die. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to deal with this. Her mom is 58, and about 10 years ago or more she went into shock. At one time she was compliant but it appears as though she is giving up. Thanks!

While I was in there, this big guy came in and said to me, "Hey pal, I'm Polish and I don't like you telling all those Polish jokes!" So I said, "Well, they're not against you, pal, just against anyone in Poland." "My mother is in Poland!" He screams, and pulls out a razor. Boy was I scared! A Blonde was down on her luck. In order to raise some money, she decided to kidnap a kid and hold him for ransom. She went to the playground, grabbed a kid, took him behind a tree, and told him, "I've kidnapped you." She then wrote a note saying, "I've kidnapped your kid. Tomorrow morning, put $10,000 in a paper bag and put it under the pecan tree next to the slide on the north side of the playground. Signed, A Blonde." The Blonde then pinned the note to the kid's shirt and sent him home to show it to his parents. The next morning the blonde checked, and sure enough, a paper bag was sitting beneath the pecan tree. The Blonde opened the bag and found the $10,000 with a note that said, "How could you do this to a fellow Blonde?" As Always, My Pleasure

My Endocrinologist is wanting me to go on 50 units of insulin in the morning and 50 units at night. I gain tremendous amounts of weight when I do this, and, frankly, I can't stand the thought of doing that again. I try to be positive, but, sometimes I just can't get that job done. I hope you all will let me join your chatting. It helps to hear from others who have gone through this. Hi all!! It' so good to see some of the old gang on here. Jim, Bambi, Anita, CB, Sam!!! And the newbies list is growing! I don't feel so alone...:+) Depression is the pits. One side of depression with Diabetis is that we can feel that we have lost control to something that isn't seen. You can't see it so you can't slap it for the total invasion of our lives. The only way to yell at it is to yell at the meds. or the meters or to look in the mirror and yell at what ever it is that is inside that image that has taken control. . . For me, fighting depression started over 11 years before I was diag. with the "Big D". I don't know if it will help anyone on here but, for me, I have to look at this invasion differently. I will not allow "D" to control my life. I make mistakes, and back slide like everyone else does, but I yell at me not the condition that requires me to be more careful. I AM IN CONTROL OF MY LIFE. It doesn't control me. It gives me hurdels, sand traps, and pot holes but, nothing I can't make decisions on to get over, around, or through them. I have control. Linda, on those days you feel the ball and chains of the "D", try to remember that you have the key to free yourself. Sometimes it's a psych job and deep down you can hear yourself telling you that. But, don't give up. In many ways "D" has given us strenghts that many don't have. We learn how to say 'No' when it's not what we want but it is the right thing to do. We learn to stand up for ourselves. Not to stand out as different, but because we are important individuals and deserve the best we can get. We learn that everything is important. Our health, our suroundings, the good days, the bad days, our friends and family. And we learn that no matter how big the universe is, we aren't alone. .. Sorry for the long post. If it doesn't make sense, just scroll by it please. It's just that I feel for the depression "D" solicits.

On a Trans-Atlantic flight, a plane passes through a severe storm. The turbulence is awful, and things go from bad to worse when one wing is struck by lightning. One woman in particular loses it. Screaming, she stands up in the front of the plane. "I'm too young to die!" she wails. Then she yells, "Well, if I'm going to die, I want my last minutes on Earth to be memorable! I've had plenty of good times in my life, but no one has ever made me really feel like a woman! Well I've had it! Is there ANYONE on this plane who can make me feel like a WOMAN??" For a moment there is silence. Everyone has forgotten their own peril, and they all stare, riveted, at the desperate woman in the front of the plane. Then, a man stands up in the rear of the plane. "I can make you feel like a woman," he says. He's gorgeous. Tall, built, with flowing black hair and jet black eyes, he starts to walk slowly up the aisle, unbuttoning his shirt one button at a time. No one moves. The woman is breathing heavily in anticipation as the strange man approaches. He removes his shirt. Muscles ripple across his chest as he reaches her, and extends the arm holding his shirt to the trembling woman, and whispers: "Iron this." My pleasure

To add to the excitement, they smuggled a bottle of booze into the game, and started immediately to enhance the soft drinks they bought. It was a good game. There was a lot of action on the field and a lot of action in the stands. All too soon, long before the game was over, the bottle was nearly empty. By now, I have given you enough information to be able to tell us how far along we are in the game, and what the status of the game is. Can you figure it out?? Another example of what this 'lovely' disease can do to you was brought home to me yesterday. A friend of mine told me about a good friend of her husband who just recently lost his sight because of his 'uncontrolled' diabetes. For years he ignored what the doctors were trying to tell him, and now he has had a very rude awakening. My fear ever since I was dx'd 33 years ago has been the possiblity of losing my sight. But so far, in spite of me not always doing what I should do, my eyesight is great. I guess what gets me the most with diabetes, is how one person can do like the afore mentioned man, and lose his sight, and then another can do everything he/she is suppose to do and still lose their sight. Or, in my case, run hot and cold w/my control and not have any complications. I guess it just depends on a persons overall approach to their own control. I know, I sound like I'm chasing a rabbit here, but the news of this guy's condition just got me to thinking about how I've 'missed the bullit', so to speak, and why!

Good morning everyone. Tammy- Bambi gave you very good advice. You really should follow through with this without delay. If it is diabetes, catching it early and getting it under control will delay/prevent many complications that lots of us have. Is he really thirsty all the time? If the stick shows glucose, don't panic, for his sake, but do have a sense of urgency to get him to the doctor. Diabetes does not mean the end of the world any more. It IS, in most cases, manageable. Good luck with this. Hope it's nothing and please let us know if you'd like. Jim

Tammy: Yes, have your son checked by a doctor as soon as possible, because the symptoms of diabetes are also the same signs as lots of other things. Meantime while you wait for your appointment, you can buy glucostix at the drugstore, Walmart, etc. He can tinkle on the stick and you compare the stick color to a little chart to get a rough estimate of blood sugar. Hopefully that will ease your mind until he can see his pediatrician. I'll be hoping that it will turn out to be nothing!
