Mandy, Yes, I've heard about the islet transplant. The islets are taken from lab raised pigs, they are then incapsulated and inserter in the stomach cavity. It is called Xenotransplantation. (Animal to Man) I've mentioned it here before, to me it sounds like a very viable 'TREATMENT'. It is not a cure! They have to place new capsules in every couple of years or so! At least this is the info I've been given in regards to this!

Toad: DKA is Diabetic Keto Acidosis. Fat is used for energy because of insufficient insulin to enable cells to use glucose. (simplified explanation). I am sure you know the symptoms, extreme thirst, rapid weight loss, dehydration, ketones in urine, etc. Type 1s are more likely to fall into it than type twos. But type 2s can also get it, if they don't follow their doctor's orders. If glucose is over 250, ketones should be checked. If positive, medical help should be sought ASAP.

HI ALL VINNY THANX FOR THE EMAIL, I WILL CHECK OUT THE SITE YOU TOLD ME ABOUT. :) HAS ANYONE HEARD OF THE ISLET TRANSPLANT? IT HAS JUST STARTED IN THE UK, THE PEOPLE WHO ARE BASED IN LONDON ARE LOOKING FOR DIABETICS TO PUT THEIR NAMES FORWARD, TO TRY IT OUT. I PUT MY SELF FORWARD BUT GOT TURNED DOWN, BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO BE 2HOURS AWAY FROM THE CENTRE BUT I LIVE FURTHER NORTH, AND LIVE ABOUT 8 HOURS AWAY, BUT NOT TO WORRY WE WILL ALL BE ABLE TO GET THIS TREATMENT AS SOON AS THEY HAVE GOT ENOUGH PEOPLE TO TRY IT. APPARENTLY THEY STARTED IT IN CANADA AND UP TO NOW IT HAS WORKED:)

I was not prescribed 172 gm protein per day. I meant to say that I do not dare go that high. I also mean to say that what works for me might not work for others. I need not defend my "diet of death" since foods high in fiber and phyto nutrients, minimally processed, commend themselves. The benefits of flaxseed and grapeseed oils are easily available. To (), Do you really believe that clean healthy food is bad for diabetics? If so, I feel sorry for you! I don't know your age or weight, physical condition or anything else but that you post to attack. Any competent dietitian would agree with what I have posted! Yes, there are people here who cannot. I know that.

woops! Faith, I appreciate your defense. Thank you! Sandy and (), A couple of questions. If a diet caused a drop of 10lbs of muscle in a month, what would you do? Another CDE did better, since my weight increased by 5 pounds, but still, there were problems. Couldn't progress in my workouts, back was weak, etc. Again, what would you do? Nothing? This happened three years ago. I would give anything to go to a 50-35-15 breakdown. Know what? That would be 172 gms protein per day. I DO NOT DARE!!! But again, "they know best", so you watch yourself waste away. I freely admit there must be CDEs who are better at calibrating caloric needs than those I have seen. In the end, control and proper (lean) weight are the goals.

You are right about the snack. You do probably need to eat a mid morning snack. Should tide you over till lunch. I like to eat peanut butter crackers for a mid morning snack. Will talk to ya'll tomorrow! Faith

Hi all! Faith, so glad to hear that the trip was fun for you. I hope someday to see the southwest, but for now, I enjoy reading about it...Mandy, yes. Test more often! Keep a journal of your daily intake, test results to include exact times. It's a pain, but it will help. Don't forget to include any and all exersize. After 4 years, I'm sure you know what it takes...It's about to rain again here. :+( We've gotten more rain this summer than I ever remember. It's usually in the 90's and hi 80's by now but we do good to break 80 in the day time and 70 at night. I suppose that means that August and September will be hot and humid. Yucky!!! Went swimming yesterday. Stayed in the water too long I guess. Felt bad all evening. BS stayed around 74 most of the time. Glad to see some of the ol' gang back on board here. Was getting tired of nothing interesting to read... Have been eating 1C Crisps with 1/4C of skimmed milk for breakfast with 1/2 a banana and decaf coffee. It works as far as the BS goes but I'm hungry within 2 hours. Anyone got any suggestions? I suppose I should get a snack of something, but I'd really like to hold off on starting a snacking habit. May not be able to though... I hope everyone's day is a nice one! PS. Faith? Did you get any pretty southwestern jewlery? I love that stuff!!!!!

HAS ANY ONE GOT ANY IDEA OF HOW I CAN TELL WHEN I AM GOING "HYPO" PLEASE??

Dear Faith...I agree that CB goes much too far....is fine to talk about what works for you....but to then go on about his distrust of diabetic educators and other and why we should discount their advice is over the edge....people come here new diabetics looking for a easy way out of traditional treatments, and are set upon by CB with his snake oil cures....remember his "death diet"....you were part of that...

Hi Herb! Glad to see you back too! No, I didn't need any help while gone. The pump worked fine, and as I said, so did my blood sugars. Yes, the mexican food in New Mexico is different. And boy, did I find out the difference between red and green chilies! LOL Sandy, CB has, in by opinion, never stated to anyone that he is an expert, and that they should take his advice only! He just shares what works for him. Those of us who have been on here for awhile know that this is just a forum for what works for us and what doesn't. Oh Herb, back to the New Mexico food, I still prefer the enchalades (sp?) here in Texas better! Did have some good steaks at a place in Santa Fe called "Bull Ring"! Mmmmmm! Hope all have a good day and good readings!!

It says "what works for YOU" - unfortunately, CB takes this a step too far. Obviously, his regimine works for him - we've heard enough to last a lifetime from him. In his fat head, what works for him should work for everyone - if they would just lift! But the comment about his "pathological hatred for medical professionals" is right on target! Hopefully, most people will ignore his rantings and continue to work with their own healthcare team and will avoid any harmful effects from him. Now watch, any minute now CB will get on here and give the same speech he always gives, laced with wheatgrass juice, flaxseed oil and goats milk. He'll never believe that he sould like an idiot. So, better just get ready for the next diatribe from him>

Maybe you missed the message at the top of this page. It asks people to share what works for them. That's what most people here do. It's not prescribing anything, so please don't get your shorts in a knot.
