There's no such thing as a free lunch; somebody pays somewhere sometime. My objection is not to providing quality healthcare for everyone in America. My objection is trying to achieve that goal (which is a wonderful goal that I wholehearted support!) through legislation passed by Congress. I believe that is the WRONG method to use simply based on what they've already done (or not done). Those founding fathers weren't creating a small government, they were covering their own backsides in an attempt to prevent the colonies from crumbling into FURTHER anarchy. They never intended for the country to remain static. For instance, Chicago would have been in a foreign country. By the way, Ben Franklin was very liberal. So was Thomas Jefferson. All I asked was -- where will YOU draw the line? Why stop at healthcare? Is housing, clothing, food not equally or more important? Just curious at where you would stop. Anyway, Medicaid/Medicare is a disaster, like most federal programs. Estimated waste and fraud is between $50 and $100 billion a year. It's amazing that we can continue to support this kind of program -- it's only due to the amazing productivity of the American work force that this can continue. As for changing insurance companies -- you most certainly can. Just change your job or go private. Many insurance companies offer private coverage -- for a price. And as for proving coverage, Congress took care of that in 1996 with HIPPA (Health Insurance Protection and Portability Act). All your employer does is provide you with a 1 page certificate saying when and how long you were covered for insurance. My job in danger? Hardly, but even if it were, I can easily get another one.

Take a deep breath, you are losing it. We are talking health care, not TV and clothing. And you are already paying for government subsidized health care in the form of Medicaid. It would not cost you more for this country, which considers itself to be the greatest nation in the world, to simply guarantee health care to anyone who needs it. People in this country can not "drop" their insurance companies at the first whim when they are covered by their employer. They must first prove that they have other coverage. The federal insurance would not take you if you are privately insured. So here is the question: are you afraid that people would be dropping their insurance companies and endangering YOUR JOB? That seems to be your point here, doesn't it? Go back to APing, you were smarter that way.

Everyone should be entitled to equal levels of housing, furnishings, clothing, cable TV, PC & Internet access, etc. ad infinitum. Where do you draw the line on this great dream of equality without cost? As for gov't. research, that is the best oxymoron I've heard in weeks. The gov't. does little except to regulate testing and quality to a greater or lesser degree (remember the fiasco with Rezulin?). Trust Washington, DC with guarding my health and providing my healthcare? May whatever greater powers exist spare us from that disaster! To "()": You have some valid complaints. However, consider that health insurance companies are not in business for charity -- they are in it to make a profit. What you have described is what we call free enterprise. If you don't like your current plan/coverage, you can always shop for different coverage. Or you could pay for everything yourself. However, when you accept a health insurance policy, you enter into a contract with definite limitations, exclusions and benefits. That's the way things work here. Of course, there's always the alternative of moving to Canada, paying a flat $125 a month and accept their way of doing things. As for me, I'll stick with what I have. It isn't perfect by a long shot, but it works for me.

Steve, I have been screwed, as have many others here. I figured you worked in healthcare, since that's a mighty good package you got there. When they up and put limits on doctors appointments, limits on amounts of pills, test strips and anything else they can as they RAISE their premiums, I call that getting screwed. I am sure you are right that people do think they should get everything for nothing, but I am willing to pay for it, and I don't get it back in fair coverage. I also think the doctors get screwed. I look at my EOB's. On a 250 bill my doctor will get about 35. And they say it's "fair" pricing, but then not only does the doctor not get any money, he then has to pay his/her nurses, administration, rent, insurance etc. That percentage is hard for the doctors to conduct business, so they crowd as many patients in as possible to cover it, and we don't get as good service. All because the insurance company doesn't want to learn what "fair" really is. And then people like me have their doctors go off of certain policies and if you want to keep that doctor then it's straight out of pocket, even after you paid your premiums to the insurance. I don't know your definition of screwed, but there is mine!

Part of the problem I see (and I am guilty of this also) is people wanting the ins. company to cover everything anywhere anytime all the time -- especially without it costing me anything. I've heard the horror stories of true incompetency/stupidity by some companies, but what most people refer to as "being screwed" is simply not getting everything you want, everytime you want it, whenever you want it -- with "it" costing you $0.

To "A Canadian" -- I don't believe any country has a stranglehold on a perfect healthcare system. For example, you pay $125/month or $1500 annually for your healthcare coverage. I pay $0. Earlier Marc B indicated problems like waiting for hours in the doctor's office or waiting 6 months to see a specialist. My wait is usually 15 min. or less and I can get an immediate referral and an appt. with a specialist within days. The cost of Metaformin ($29.00) or Diabeta ($33.00) -- for me both would be only $5.00. My point was this: the U.S. system may not be perfect (just look at Medicare for a prime example), but seeing what Congress has done with Medicare makes me want to fight tool and nail to keep our healthcare system OUT of the federal gov't. hands. Perfection would be very hard to achieve this side of heaven, but what I currently have is much, much better than the prospects I see coming from Washington, DC. Everything they touch becomes FUBAR (fouled up beyond all recognition). They may have good intentions, but the road to hell is paved with good intentions. If they are urgent and they can not done immediately, the Government will pay to have them send to the US and it is paid for them. Now regarding getting appointments. I have never to wait any longer to see my GP than one or two days. He can refer me to any specialist I want. Again when I had an head injury the specialist saw me right away and I got all treatments done right away. Never had I to fill out your endless forms, they don't exist Steve. Cosmetic work has a waiting list of course. I can choose ANY doctor to go to at ANYTIME. You need a doctor referral to see a specialist and that referral is good for 6 months if you want to see him again. I really don't know where you get your stories from. You are connected with the medical system or drug companies in the US???? People over the age of 65 get all their drugs without any more payment than paying an fee for the pharmacist of average $5 or $6. Under 65 you pay about $ 125 per month for the plan or somewhat more depending on which Province you live in. Drug prices????? In the last 60 minutes TV program, you could have seen American seniors coming to Canada by the busload to buy their drugs and one lady stated on that program that she saved $ 1,000. on her purchases. Steve, I will assume that you have been mislead by the wrong info from sources interested to gain from that info. God Bless America and all the victims of your medical and drug consortiums. That bureaucracy is designed to enslave people (much like welfare does) and the bureaucracy grows larger as it consumes more tax dollars. Look at Canada - while all Canadians may have healthcare, I question the quality of it. Would you like to wait 3, 4, 6 months for an appointment, have to complete endless forms to see a specialist or pay even higher prices for prescription drugs? It seems to me that anything Congress touches it messes up. We're better off when Congress is in recess - at least then they can't make things worse.

And you get your data on how many people at this board are on Medicaid/Medicare from where? I have gotten the impression that many are cared for under private pay insurance/HMO plans. Or is it just you that is leeching off the tax dollar of hard-working Americans?

Well Steve, the founding fathers had no idea that we would have the overflowing population breeding and turning out 3rd and 4th generation welfare families which will destroy anything but a Federal health care system...which also would include, as CB says ..the fat cow diabetics that post on here....

It's an insane spiral. When your blood sugar is high, your body is burning carbs faster and you begin to lose weight. When you get the blood sugar down, the insilin starts to turn every bit of carbohydrate it can grab into body fat. You could try eating more protein (meat, eggs, cheese) and less starch/sugar/milk and see if that helps. The other meds you are taking are also working with your insulin to turn the carbs into body fat. I'm right there with ya, trying to just not gain.

Hi all... Kind of a dreary day today, but the temp is nice. Great for a ball game this after noon...Marc? When are you going to learn not to respond? You allow yourself to be irritated. In turn the rest of us have to scroll further and further down the page to read actual posts from friends and fellow D's with something of interest to say. Come on, my friend. You're better than this. We as D's rejoice (and struggle at times) with selfcontrol and disappline (sp). Exersize some here. Use the posts you want to respond to like a re-enforcement tool. Before you start typing take the time to ask yourself a question. What is more important to you. Keeping self-control? or Giving into tempation and giving control to someone or something else? For me, I don't feel good about myself when I hand control to anyone or anything else willingly. If nothing else, look through the latest postings here. You are helping to chase our friends away from posting. I know you don't want that anymore than I do. Ignore the stupidity, my friend... Ignore, Ignore, Ignore......

Actually, CB has a good point. For example, the current proposal for the Patients Bill of Rights is simply a step toward federally controlled healthcare (a la Hillary Clinton). Big gov't. thinks they know whats best for you, i.e., they control all aspects of your life. That's not what the founding fathers had in mind when the wrote the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. If you read those, you'll clearly see they envisioned a small federal government, not the bloated monstrosity we have today. I'd rather keep the management of my health between me and my doctor, not me, my doctor and the Congress.

I will say this once only:to whoever and what ever keeps posting these insulting replies to me:What do you want from me? I have never mistreated you,O,and you know that I have as much right (as another diabetic) to be on this chat as anyone else. I'll make it clear:I'm proud to be a Canadian. I am proud of my country's medical standards. You probably are aware that Banting (Of London,Ont) made so many discoveries that helped diabetics. No,our own medical system isn't perfect,(and Premier Mike Harris is wrecking the medical care in Ontario) Years ago,my family considered moving to the USA;we felt, however, that staying in Canada, with the very fine and distinguished doctors, plus the fact that under OHIP,we don't pay for most medical services. Waiting many hours in the doctor's office,or waiting six months,(or more) for important medical specialists is one of the problems all Canadians face. The cost of certain diabetic drugs in Canada:(esp if they're brand names,I don't like to take generic ones) examples:"Avandia"=$92.00. Under my health care coverage(company) I pay only $5.00. "Metformin"(Glucophage)=Full price:$66.00. I pay $29.00. Blood pressure drugs(Ace Inhibitors) Monopril:$105.00. I pay $5.00. Diabeta:$58.00 I pay $33.00. These are just a few examples. Thoughts on July 4th. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are rights from above, not the leftists in Congress. Would that those dangers to American experiment, Boxer, Feinstein, Daschle, Gephart, would be recalled from office and replaced with supporters of Constitutional Gov't, that is, SMALL gov't. BTW, OUR Medicare is not correct, since others taxed involuntarily to subsidize your medical needs. A retiree might be covered by his/her company"s health plan if Medicare were not there. States of course may have programs like that, but Washington CANNOT!!!

Wrong again,O!! Yes,I think there are many advantages to our (Canadian Socialized Medicare) it works for me. As a diabetic,I need to see alot of specialists, not having to pay is a feature of the system that helps a great deal. The costs of medical appointments,MRI C-Scans,diabetic drugs-it is so high. Without this system, plus a very good drug plan that my company Famous Players pays for,I wouldn't be able to afford the specialists or the important diabetic drugs that help make my diabetes controllable.
