Tuesday, Jodi worked all day in her flower beds and I knew she was dead
tired so I suggested that she not cook, just go get us a burger. I ate a burger
around 9:00 PM which I know is way to late. At bedtime my BS was 159 so I took
no insulin as an experiment. Wednesday we went about 75 miles north of here to
visit our grand daughters at church camp. On the way home our daughter in law in
Tulsa called us on the cell phone to tell us that our son was about 10 miles in
front of us with car trouble. We took him some water and helped him limp into a
small town. Then we took him home so he could get his pickup, tools, and a
friend to go back with him to get his car. Once again I didn't eat until 9:00
PM. BS at bedtime was once again 159 so I took no insulin. Breakfast BS this
morning was 80. Maybe we need to raise the levels at where I eat a snack and
where I take insulin????? Herb (Bear) and Jodi

Hi Bambi! If the post meal rise in
bs is controlled, you should be ok! I believe the NPH might slow down the
Humalog somewhat. If BS runs high after a meal, you may have to allow more time.
The paper inside the bottle will give you its normal time of activity.

BTW, my insulin stopped
working for me again a couple of weeks ago, so it was changed to HumalogMix

I'm using quite a lot, 160 units total in 3 shots. Anyone else using it? What
have you found to be the best wait time between shot and meal? I've been taking
immediately before meal like plain Humalog, but am not sure if this is correct
because it has that longer acting Humalog mixed in.

Hi Sam and Reader! And everyone else too! I
just popped in and saw your conversation and have to say that you are both
right. Some insurance will buy a pump or whatever and then you own it forever to
keep or sell or whatever. Some insurance considers it "home medical equipment"
or "durable medical equipment" and will provide it on a lease program. The only
diff is that if you switch insurance, you might (but not always) have to return
any leased equipment and get it re-ordered by the doc. Every insurance contract
has its quirks. Hi also Marc, Faith, CB, Gordo, Herb, and everybody else! BTW,
if you emailed me recently, I'm not ignoring, but email.com has been doing

CB... you know my first reaction after seeing you accuse me of writing that
post was to tell you off. But why, that hasn't mattered in the past. So let me
do this for you and see if maybe you will start to catch on to why so many
strike out at your post. I am on the pump, I think people who are still on shots
are missing out on a great thing. I offer my help to answer any questions that
may arise. All pumpers are like this. If we are on the pump we believe we are
doing the best we can for ourselves and would like others to know how it could
help them. We all offer help if asked. That is the same philosophy as you have
with your workouts. But none of us are taunghting people, saying things like I
bet your AFRAID to pump. That is why you are constantly going over that
perverbial line, you go from what works for me to drawing a comparison to fat
people, to sedetary life styles and you pass judgement. You don't take in to
account why someone may have a weight problem, you just want to plug in your
workout routine to "cure" them. Well it doesn't work that way and that would be
along the lines of the pumpers telling everyone on shots they are wrong to not
go on the pump, that their way is wrong because my way is right. One day you
will figure this out, and the posters will stop harrassing you. BTW, I would
never AP anyone, I am proud of my viewpoints, and you know if I have something
to say to you I will sign it like I always have......Marc

No, it's all about what works for CB has got to be the cure all to all our
diabetic woes. Until you get that scientific proof your looking for, the kidney
failure you are bring to yourself. Personally I welcome that, maybe that would
shut your fat mouth up and give people a rest from the preaching of CB. I have
never seen someone with such a one sided opinion before. Making love with my
spouse is great exercise, I feel great afterward and is perfect for the
diabetes. Oh but that is something you couldn't understand, since your so in
love with yourself I can't imagine you know what a woman feels like. Well maybe
the big, muscular ones at the gym you compare biceps to. Just make sure when
your world comes down on you from this obsession with protein that you come back
and post the dialysis news for us too. Gives us something to look forward
to.

To (), I appreciate any prayers
offered in my behalf. I was going to ask a dietary QUESTION, but your post
changed my mind. Just whay is a diet of death? What IS it? So far, healthfoods
are in that category, as is wheatgrass, spirulina, and nutrient dense greens.
Whole grain organic breads are part of it, as are flaxseed oil, fish oil, and
grapeseed oil. What does that leave us? Not much. Regarding kidney failure, I do
not answer to you, and never would! I am getting the necessary tests yearly. For
the record, it remains best to avoid the over=processed, polluted junk called
"food" and go for that with minimal processing. I doubt you will consider the
idiocy of your past posts. BTW, you don't know what my meal plan is! I will
leave you with another question. Whay is it that for a man weighing 80 kg., 64gm
protein is ok, but 150 gms is too much for the kidneys. Where is the clinical
proof? There is none. Put that 170 pound man in the gym doing squats, benches,
and other movements that tear down muscle tissue, how, without sufficient
aminos, can repair and growth take place? You either don't know the answer or
you will say that the Diabetic shouldn't do that, which is a crap-filled
generality that doesn't apply. If I wagered, I would bet that you are AFRAID to
lift. You are full of misinformation. There is more than one side to some of the
issues that I have raised here, but calm discussion of those sides is not
allowed to take place. 'nuf said! Squatfreak, from the squatrack.

Reader... sorry to hear that, it sounded so promising. It is strange about
the insurance and the pump, you would think the expense of complications and the
fact that the pump is one of the better ways to hold off complications would
have the insurance company wanting pump use. Oh well, I guess they would rather
gamble to what might happen later than to pay up today. If you do want
additional info or just a frank talk about it, I am always available in e-mail.
And you know I don't just offer what's great about it, I will always call it

Well, a week
ago I reported how excited I was to be on Lantus with 3 days of great blood
sugars; the bottom dropped out on Friday and by Monday, I was back on Ultralente
and Regular. How disappointed I was. The blood sugars soared to 450 and the
lowest was the high 200 range, even with the regular. My heart and head were
pounding so bad, I figured a stroke or heart attack was just around the corner.
Of course, the new doc. would have liked to increase the dose, but never having
felt this way with Ultralents (even with the highs and lows), I just decided to
go back to the old routine. I did't think I had the time to wait it out another
week or so. So, the "old routine is now the new routine" and I will continue
with it until they insist on the pump. Mark, I have followed your progress and
know you have had ups and downs with it, but you seem to keep going, and it is
turning out to be a great "tool" to manage your D. Your A1C is indicative of
your good control. So, I will, when I get ready to try another new insulin, head
in that direction. (that's where the doc was heading, his "hint" - 150 patients
on the pump, and everyone loves it) I also just read in the insurance manual
where I work, that if you change your provider during open enrollment, you have
to give the pump back; can you believe they would want a USED pump? We have 4
different providers. So for now, as long as the bs stays somewhat stable, (as I
know it), I will just stick with it. Get some fine tuning from the new doc. and
live with it. Thanks everyone for your input. I am glad you all had such great
results with Lantus and the pump. It just didn't work for me. Have A Nice
Evening

Our company left yesterday. Jodi and I have decided that to have company
come in their travel trailer is the ideal way to have company. You don't have to
put clean bedclthes on their bed, you don't have to make sure they have clean
wash clothes and towels, and in this case they fixed their own breakfast in
their trailer every morning and we didn't see them until around 10:00 AM. It was
more like haveing good neighbors than having company.Ever since we both left the
camp they have had a domino tournament at their house in December for some of
the volunteers that used to come to camp. We have decided that this was so much
fun that we are going to expand it into a 3-4 times a year event. Jodi and I
have been studying the early morning lows. I spent nearly all day Thursday
helping Jodi get ready for company. I cut up brocoli for her brocoli salad,
cabbage for the cole slaw, fruits for the fruit salad, strawberries for the
strawberry pie, etc. etc. My blood sugar was 265 at bedtime and 34 the next
morning after 10 units of insulin. Friday we spent the day traveling around
southeast Oklahoma and had a noon picnic and ate supper on the way home way to
late. BS was 235 at bedtime and 53 the next morning after 10 units of insulin at
bedtime. Saturday we rested and did a lot of nothing. My BS was within normal
range both Saturday night and Sunday morning. Sunday we got our and went to
church twice my BS was 139 at bedtime and I took the normal 10 and had a
terrible crash at 5:00 AM. I was so weak that Jodi didn't bother to take my
blood sugar she just started feeding me orange juice and snacks. Yesterday I
didn't do much of any thing and my BS was 125 at bedtime so I took no insulin
and my BS was 74 this morning. We went back through my BS log and found that
when my bedtime sugars have run 100 to 125 and I have taken no insulin my
morning sugars have run 70 to 90. When my bedtime BS runs 125 to 140 and I take
my 10 units my morning BS runs the same 70 to 90. Based on this we are going to
have me eat a snack and no insulin at bedtime when it runs 100 to 125 and just
take no insulin from 125 to 140. We'll try this for a while and see what
happens. As over weight as I am it just seems counter productive to take the
insulin and then eat something to support it. THANX to all of you who have sent
me advice and support. Herb (Bear) and Jodi
