I started on Lantus when it came out about a month ago here in the states. It replaced my Ultralente and so far the results have been wonderful.....I've always had trouble with morning sugars being high, but the Lantus seems to be working that out. It's taken at bedtime, and my endo had me switch from the Ultralente unit for unit with the Lantus. Apparently, the time it takes to get into the bloodstream is more consistent than the Ultralente was, and it has no peak at all (Ultralente had just a small peak), and it lasts for the entire 24 hours......I use it in combination with Humalog

My am bs have started to come in the 150-200 range, I guess I will start by putting a new infusion in. Then of course If that does not work I will start the over night testing! Have a great day, time to get on the tredmill. Love & Luck, Misty

Jim... your busted, you said your, your caught. Man that sounds stupid, how do they write that? Tonight, man, tonight will be the hammer falling down on Philly. A READER.... it's good to get a first hand account of Lantus, my doc started to fill me in, I am on the pump so I only use short acting. He said it acted as a basal insulin, an even 24 hours at the same level. It sounds by what you say it works as good as he said it would. Thanks for sharing that and good luck with it long term..... LOL Marc- Isn't Mutumbo an old detective series of a cross-eyed, cigar chomping detective wearing a trenchcoat? I think it was on in the 70's. My HbA1c came back at 5.6 and while that's still pretty good, it's a jump from 5.0 the last time. Have a good day everyone. Jim

Hello Everyone, I have been reading for several years now, watching the group struggle with the highs and lows of being insulin dependent. A few days ago my doc put me on Lantus, a new insulin product made in Germany and distributed through Avetis Pharm. in Kansas City. I have gone from a morning and night time mixture of ultralente and regular to one shot of 12 units of Lantus at bedtime (the recommended time for the shot, and approximately 1/3rd less the ultralente dose) with the Regular insulin dose remaining the same with each meal, so 4 shots a day, instead of three; but with the ultrafine needles there is no pain, no bother. My blood sugars with this new product have been ranging 75 - 160, a far cry of 20 to 350 - in just a few days, and I am eating the same thing, doing the same routine, without those horrible lows and highs. This new insulin is a DNA format with what the doctor thought had the same affect the pork insulin use to have. (I have heard there is a class action lawsuit against Lilly for removing the animal insulins from the market...not sure though.) I never did adjust to the Humulin and have had terrible A1c tests since the Humulin came on the market 10 years ago. Three days of good tests makes me very happy. I am praying this Lantus is the turn around for me. The doctor gave me the vial, I do not know if it for sale in the states yet, and do not know if insurance will cover it. But so far, with these wonderful tests, and NO LOWS, I will buy it on my own, if the results continue the way they are right now. I forgot what is was like to have a day without high BS or grabbing for the glucose. I have been pretty miserable. This could be a new beginning for all of us. It could make every day a good day, a great day... I only hope this works for all of us !!!! Good Night

MISTY: Don't worry if it is the same test that I had it is absolutely painless. The only negative side of it was that it was messy. I made the mistake of wearing long pants so I had to strip down to my skivvies to have it done. Then the clean up of all the grease or gel is some what extensive. GOOD LUCK!!!! Herb (Bear)

The testing will take about 2 hours so they say. I really do not like having new and unknown things done..... Scott, so sorry to hear your bad news. I went through this in September and it still is upsetting. Take care.....Faith we are UNITED! We will be the winners!......Jim, thanks for the info, maybe I will be getting all of the test. I will let you all know on Tuesday. Must Go, Love & Luck, Misty

He was going to check his e-mail later so for those that want, maybe you could send him one. OK, enough on that, I wonder if NBA.DIABETES.COM is taken, I like that. By the way for those who like following diabetics in sports, both the PGA and the LPGA have had winners lately that were pump wearers. Marc- That's good that we'll get real chocolate. Can't be too careful around those Spur fans! Misty- I had that test done last year. They called it a "doppler" circulation test. They (in my case) put about 5 blood pressure cuffs on each leg, plus a tiny one on each big toe and inflated them one at a time to check circulation pressure. Relatively painless. There were a few times leg started to cramp as the air was releasing from the cuff on my calves. Hope this helps. Jim

However, some people with Type II diabetes cannot properly metabolize ALA, so flaxseed oil may be of no benefit to them. Psyllium Should not be used within 2 hours of taking any medication because it may delay drug absorption.

Jim... what happened last night? what, was the game on? I think we needed that, this talk of history was going to their heads. Now you'll see some real banging inside and we will be back on track. I bet Scott and I made mine a sweep, opps. What you said in your post I couldn't agree more. I think it gets lost in here that people are providing info based on experience and in Gordon's case through books, but diabetes isn't plug and play. We have to take that info and find out how it applies to us. And that is where the TRAINED PROFESSIONALS come in to place. Yes CB, I know you think they are all a bunch of quacks, but the rest of us believe in our team or we wouldn't have them, or should change them. Anyway, as long as that point is understood then it doesn't matter is CB is a walking protein bar, that's what works for him. For now, some of us are expecting a post soon about dialysis (sp) but I hope we are wrong. Well, off to ebay to see if I can get a buck or two for all my laker gear, naw just joking! Lakers in 5. or 6 or 7... just win......Marc

Good morning everyone. Marc- What the hell happened last night? Over confidence maybe? Now I'm worried that they'll fall apart. Likely not, but to be the Lakers this year and lose at home, WOW! While I DO respect you Gordo, and think you and CB know your stuff to a degree, I have to disagree with part of your post. The "so called professional" HAS to assume that the newly diagnosed diabetic is uneducable at least at first. Many (NOT ALL) of us type II's were overweight/obese when diagnosed. Obviously many of us (NOT ALL) weren't educated to eat sensible and exercise. Had we been, maybe diabetes would have been staved off for many years or maybe even altogether. After diagnosis, I still couldn't get my BS in control. On oral meds. Even though I learned a ton from this site, you, and the internet. It was the nutritionist and diabetic educator that helped me to get my eating straightened out. That's not taking anything away from you or anyone else. They had the advantage of me sitting right there in front of them and conversing back and forth. I don't consider myself uneducable, and they didn't try to get me to come back. After that one and only visit, they left me with the comment, "If you feel you need to schedule another vist please do so, or if you have any questions at all please don't hesitate to call". Back to the uneducable part, how many people have you given advice to that kept coming back and still didn't understand what you were talking about? Repeatedly going back to the DE or nutritionalist doesn't mean that the patient is stupid OR the the professional is gouging the insurance company. Maybe it just means that the patient just don't understand, and the professional has to assume that until they are sure he/she does understand. Again, while you give great tips and advice, I still say people should never change 1 thing about their care until they talk to the doctor/DE/nutritionalist. I even got tips from you that I called the nutritionalist about before using, and yes, you were right about it, but the onus is still on the patient to check with their health care professional before changing anything. Sorry to be so longwinged but that's my OPINION. HbA1c- Anyone needing a benchmark to convert their HbA1c into average bs numbers, here goes: 4.0 = 60, and for every decimal graduation add 3 to bs average. Example 4.1 = 63, 4.2 = 66, 4.3 = 69 and so on. Jim

To the AP who took offense at mostly carbs and fats.....here is a little math. Yake an individual whose bodyweight is 150 lbs (70 kilogramss) Meal plan calls for 2000 calories and 50 gm protein. 50 gm protein is 240 calories. Subtract from 2000 and that leaves 1760 calories. Where will those calories come from? You guessed it! Carbs and fats. Protein will be but 12% of total calories. My point stands. To Gordo, Thanks again.
