Now that I am on Ameryl and have read the warnings that state you might be 2 and 1/2 times more at risk for heart disease due to a study that somewhat indicated those results has anyone that has taken it had any input from their Md re same? It has been helping my BS but is the cure worth it? My Doctor has pooh-poohed the study but I am anxious about taking it! Any of your thoughts or knowledge re same would be appreciated. Thanks!

I've been visiting this site for four years now. Gordo has provided me with all kinds of information. CB has provided me with all kinds of information. So have a number of other people. I have taken it all and examined it and compared it to information from other sources. I have applied some of it and adapted some of it and tossed out some of it and ignored some of it. This is not a "one size fits all" disease, but I welcome all the input I can get from others' experiences -- from whatever source. It's then my job to sort it out as to how it applies to me. My thanks to everyone who takes the time to share the information they have from their own experiences, which I believe is what this site is supposed to be all about.

(): How many patients or consumers of professional nutritionalists have ever been sufficiently or successfully educated to "go it alone without the professional expertise". These so called professionals ASSUME that their customers are uneducable thus need the professional help for the remainder of their lives. Good CASH COWS, and what a predictable income. Neither CB nor I charge for the so-called misinformation that we attempt to impart to the uninformed being. I don't know where CB's understanding comes from but mine comes directly from publically televised video tapes of Nutrition Class lectures taught to Nursing Students at Rogers State University at Claremore Oklahoma by a PHD instructor at Oklahoma State University's College of Osteopathic Medicine at Tulsa Oklahoma. Regarding the flaxseed oil that CB recommends, to the general diabetic poster that wants nutritional information and has the basic intelligence to comprehend that the oversimplification touted by the misinforming AP's, that cannot think or learn for themselves, speak from gross ignorrance. The USDA "stats" on flaxseed oil is 1 TBSP weighs 13 gm, 114.9 kcal, 13 gm total fat, of which only 1.222 gm is saturated fat, and 8.58gm is polyunsaturated fat( the kind that causes problems for heart patients). Much of this has been said many times on this forum however we have to admit that the agitators are completely non-observant of the positive information that can help diabetics with their nutritional education. The human body requires balance in the nutrients that it needs. If the AP understood the body's needs, maybe he/she/it would be of some benefit to the diabetics that need help from us. Ho hum, what else is new. Keep up the good nutritional information, CB. Some of it may rub off to these AP's. At least, some of the lesser informed, that can stomach the crud posted by the AP agitators, can gain something from their frustration. Gordo

Hi Everyone: Well with the exception of the situation with Beth and Becky everything seems to be speeding to normal for the Shaws. Beth is still slownly getting stronger and we are all anxiously waiting for Becky's test results. Tomorrow our ex boss (from the boy's camp) and his wife are coming down and parking their travel trailer on our drive way and staying with us for a few days. Three other couples that used to do volunteer work for us at the camp are coming over Thursday afternoon and evening and we are going to have a domino tournament. Kevin is coming back on the weekend to do some more work on the house. Greg and his family won't be here this weekend. Carolyn has a book fair she has to go to. She home schools their kids and this is where she sells her old school books and buys new ones for the coming year. Katie (Kevins 6 year old) is getting ready to have her tonsils out the same day that we will get Becky's test results. We just had 2 of Michelle's Greg's 11 year old) paintings framed and have them hanging. We have notified all the kids that Fathers Day weekend that if they just insist on doing something to the house that it will all have to contained on Saturday because the best Fathers Day gift that they can give Papa is for all of them to go to church with him on Sunday morning. My blood sugars have just been doing great. My fishing tackle project for the grand children is coming right along. Jodi just came in with 1/2 a flat of strawberries to make the BWD Cooking srawberry pie for our company so I guess I had better go cut them up for her. It sure is great to not hear about so many problems among all of you. All of you just keep on keepin' on! Herb (Bear) and Jodi

Funny, indeed, that my nemesis has not responded to one specific point I made last night! ...not one. Secondly, he/she does not know what my diet intake is. He/she should know that tight bs control is the best insurance against complications, not insufficient calories/nutrients. Tight bs control is no guarantee though. Many here would concur wioth that. At the risk of continuing in this rut, undernutrition can cause a host of problems: muscle loss, joint problems, immune system trouble, slow healing of cuts and bruises, circulatory problems, etc. I am done with this for now.

A REPEAT. SINCE PROTEINS ARE TO BE MONITORED, CONSIDER THE QUALITY AND THE SOURCES. THE BODY CAN MANUFACTURE ALL BUT 8 AMINOS. THEREFORE, POORER QUALITY PROTEIN SOURCES (PLANT SOURCES) ARE BEST "BEEFED UP" BY AMINO ACID INTAKE. THE GOAL HERE IS NOT TO INCREASE PROTEIN AMOUNT, BUT THE QUALITY OF THE PROTEIN. SINCE DIABETICS THROUGH THEIR DIETS AND DISEASE TEND TO BREAK DOWN MORE QUICKLY WITH AGE, IT ONLY MAKES GOOD SENSE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF RECENT SUPPLEMENT DEVELOPMENTS TO MAINTAIN LEAN TISSUE. I HAVE MENTIONED GLUTAMINE, WHICH FOR MOST PEOPLE IS PERFECTLY SAFE TO USE---IS A FOOD!!! BRANCHED CHAIN AMINO ACIDS ALSO ARE SAFE FOR MOST PEOPLE. AGAIN, THE IDEA IS NOT TO INCREASE PROTEIN, BUT MAKE IT BETTER QUALITY. FOR EXAMPLE, IF LUNCH CALLS FOR 2 OZ MEAT AND 4 SERVINGS OF STARCH, PROTEIN WILL BE AROUND 22 GMS. BUT ONLY 14 ARE COMPLETE. ADD THE LACKING AMINOS AND YOU GET MORE OF THE ESSENTIALS. THIS IS STANDARD STUFF. AGAIN, TO (), I EXPECT YOUR IGNORANCE TO BE MANIFESTED IN A VERBAL ATTACK OF ME. CB aka SQUATFREAK

To 16:50, CB and Marc are different! Now, why should I "shut up" when issues of health and nutrition are so critical?! Why should I "shut up" when healthy foods are condemned? Tomorrow, I am attending a support group for Diabetics, the subject of which will be "exercise", a subject I do know something about. I certainly hope the lecturer is up-to-date. That will be evident very early in the presentation.

What a weekend this was. Both boys came with their families again. I have become convinced that one reason they are doing this is to keep their Moma occupied with the weekend activities so she won't have time to become depressed over the situration with Beth and Becky. She spends all week planning menus buying food and getting ready for them to come. We bought this old house before I got real sick and was still capable of fixing it up. Now all I can do is advise and recomend. We have assured them that with all the work they are putting into it that it will be theirs when we are gone. We gave $50,000 for it in pretty sad condition. Right now it would bring $150,000 if we had it finished. We are doing everything first class. This weekend the boys worked more on the soffets and facia boards as well as adding R30 insulation to what was already there in the back half of the attic. They started on the insulation project at 10:30 PM after they had worked all day on the soffets and finished the insulation at 3:00 in the morning. Jodi had bought some flower bed edging bricks that are round on one end and concave on the other end so you can arrange them in all kinds of shapes. So she and the girls built a 6 ft round flower bed in the fron yard around the stump of a big cedar tree we had to take out after the ice storm. (I've never liked cedars anyway) they put 400# of potting soil in it and planted flowers all weekend. Most of what they planted was already blooming so it is real pretty. Even if it wasn't I wouldn't tell Jodi, she does not have a whole lot of happy things in her life right now. Beth is still getting stronger. With special permission from Dr. Minor she and Rick went out for a little while Saturday night. It was the first time she had been out of the house except for trips to the hospital or the doctor in months. Dr. Minor is very careful and gets in no hurry. Becky is scheduled to take just about every test known to man. She will get her results on Tuesday after the 4th of July. Jodi is scheduled to go with her. She wants her Moma there due to Jodi's nursing training and the research that Jodi and I have done on Masto. She feels that her Mother will better understand what Minor is saying and will know what questions to ask. The cell phone has proven to be one of the best investments we have made. We have totally eliminated our long distance bill with the other phone (which was running $150 to $200 a month} and have yet to exceed the free minutes we get for our $50 a month. I had another episode Friday night where my blood sugar was unexplainably 337 at bedtime and 58 Saturday morning with no extra insulin. Other than that my sugars have been remarkably stable within the desired range. The boys are coming back Fathers Day weekend. Later this week my ex boss and his wife are going to come and park their travel trailer on the driveway and stay a couple of days with us. I have let this get way to long so I had better close now. Will see all of you later and hope that all of you are dong well. Herb (Bear) and Jodi
