Was just checking in before turning in. I mailed that sof-set to MiniMed today that wouldn't connect back together Saturday. I'll keep you pumpers posted on what I hear back. Fighting some highs today. Got some upsetting news about a former boss who is dying and it has really got me stressed out. He is like a father to me. I wish I could make those who are not diabetic understand that this sort of thing can and does affect ones diabetes. After all these years and some close to me still don't get it! Sheesh! Vinny, I bought my insulin carrier from local drug store. You freeze the container that holds the insulin. It holds two bottles. It has lasted up to two days in 90 degree weather. the out side is very insulated. Made by MEDICOOL, INC. They give you two containers so you can use one and have one in the freezer. The Silhuoette is what we have been talking about. Your right in that Minimed doesn't make it real easy to know how to use those. They did fax over instructions last night. If you need them I can fax them to you or call Minimed. I feel like I did when I first learned how to use needles, I know that thing couldn't hurt as bad as it looks or no one would use it. This does bring me to a point. When I first asked about the pump, I couldn't get anyone to tell me any down sides. Now that I have been on it and know the downsides, I can make a logical and informed decision as to whether it is right for me. I think we (pumpers) need to be more upfront and honest as to what really can and does happen. I post sometimes on a pumpers site, and many people have this insertion set problem. I think it would benefit those thinking of it to know the whole truth and not just the great things. Obviously I think the good outweighs the bad or I wouldn't be giving it another try, but I do think those who are going on it would be better equiped to deal with it all if they knew ahead of time..... ok I am boring the non pumpers so I will go back to work now........Marc

Jodi, my wife found a little insulated nylon thing I think at Wal-mart. It's about 6 inches square and 8-10 inches tall and comes with a bottle of blue liquid that you freeze and put in it's pocket. We carry my insulin, some individual serving size bottles of orange juice and some nutrition bars in it in case I have a low while we are out. I think it is intended to carry a lunch in. Herb (Bear)

Jim F,....I'm in debt to you for pointing me to the two websites. The bird site points out that in particular birds should not be treated with teatree oil and other animals with care. The other one is not so down on teatree oil but enough to make me think. It mentioned that terpentine poisening may occut throught the skin when used topically. While it was issued to Australian troups in the 1st worldwar it makes sense that not that much was known about it in those days. I wonder if it is that dangerous as it is said on the bird site why it is sold so widely in healthfood stores.--However I think that I will dispense with it's use for now. It did reduce the ulcer but it still takes very much time. The warning see your doctor applies and while I alway preach that I didn't do that. On the internet some say yes and some say no. My body wouldn't accept the metal needle. The Sof-set is the only one I can use. I didn't like inserting the needle either. Too slow! Marc, when I called MiniMed about the alarms, they recommended the silhouettes. They sent me some samples by Fedex and then I called back for instructions on how to insert them. One thing I found out from the start is to loosen the needle by hand so that it is easy to remove when you have everything in place. It is a long needle but you learn how to insert it painlessly. MiniMed also exchanged all the sof-sets that were under 3 or 4 months old in unopened cartons with Silhouettes......Jim

Life is to short for that. I will make sure that I have my diabetes in as good a control that I can, with my diet and exercise(when the dr. gives me the ok) and go from there. Here it will show what the teatree oil will do. Jim is a real proponent of the stuff. He told me about it. It seems that when you have dia. for a long time you can see the skincolor on the lower leg and feet change and become more spotty. That makes it easier for the skin to make the ulcers. Often only caused by pressure when sleeping by having one leg over the other. You wouldn't notice that you are doing that because you are sleeping. Same as people in wheelchairs get pressure ulcers and people who must stay in bed all the time. ----------------------------------------------------------------- An other is caused by deep vein thrombosis where the red bloodcells rise from pools of venous blood that hang around at the lower leg instead of circulating. When this info is all pressed together on this board it will be hard to read. We( Dr, Minimed and myself) pulled me off the pump before going through the routine of trying the Silhouette. I am happy to see success with dealing with that issue. It encourages me to give it another try. Once you are on the pump, shots seem so much worse. I can't tell you how irritating it is to fumble around with insulin bottles in a dark restroom at a restaurant instead of hitting a button a few times at the table. Not to mention the inability to cover foods that are so simple to cover with a dual or square wave. Sam.. I had the same problem as Jim and that's why I am off it now. Don't think that is gonna last long though. I am glad this place is up and running, it gives me encouragment again to do those things I started to really struggle bad with......Marc

It is much easier to achieve my goal with the pump. I had to make one major change in that I had to switch to the silhouette infusion sets as the sof-sets were penetrating below my fat layer and causing blockage alarms. Since the silhouettes are inserted at a 30 degree angle the insulin is released into my fat layer and I have not had a blockage alarm since. It is nice to be back here.......Jim

Today I went and had the rest of my testing done to see if they could find the cause of my internal bleeding Had to have an endoscopy and a colonoscopy. Had a lot of polyps removed and no ulcer in the stomach. We are still not sure where all the bleeding came from. It may have been because of the coumidin and my vasculitis,and having it come from the polyps. BUT THERE IS ONE THING THAT I WANT YOU FOLKS TO KNOW, THAT IS VERY IMPORTANT. If you have neuropathy of the abdomen and bowels, it can cover up many things that are going on in your body. Just one more of the complications of this disease called Diabetes!! Had I had any feeling in those areas, I may have known that something was going on and could have caught it before I got so weak and lost so much blood. The Dr. told me today that I had lost 2/3's of my bodys blood. I am on the mend as the saying goes now, but am still very weak and tired. Will try to keep in touch each day. Hopefully they'll be ok but I wanted to post an address for people to check out if you want. Diabetes and depression most of the time goes hand in hand. Please learn the symptoms, and talk to your doctor. It doesn't mean you are crazy and there is no shame in taking antidepressants. Misty; the pump is really helping, I still run a bit high, but better than the bad "lows" I used to have. It is saving my life. Yes..been a year now. I get tired of wearing it, but it's better than the alternative...can't use long lasting insulin anymore due to allergy. Watch out for static electricity! can short your pump out, everything goes. Even the time. You have to re-program all of your data. Keep a record of basal rates, etc...
