Gordon, this is a fine and sensitive post! Bravo! E-mail me:very happy to discuss (on e-mail) my own problems with control:re:diabetes. I'm still(in many ways) a " new diabetic(11 years) I do try to do as well as I can. Dealing with weaknesses with food, and what/when to eat, always has been a struggle for me. I know I don't always manage "D" too well. Taken me almost 5-7 years before I really began to take being a diabetic with greater understanding. I still have many frustrations about diabetes. On many levels, this requires alot of work on my part. Being part of this chat and the many supportive people(Marc W,Gordon,Faith,Fara,etc-thanks.) Marc Paul Bernstein.

CB, Marc, and others: As I see it, we are all saying basically the same thing in different ways or magnetudes. We are basically saying that understanding the nutrients ingested into the diabetic body and understanding how exercise affects our BG level and also our insulin needs or uses, whether from the pancreas, supplementation of pancreatic insulin production from various oral medications, supplemented insulin from either one of more needles each day or continual basal pump injections plus boluses for nutritional intake, the closer we are able to regulate our BG balance, the less complications we may experience from our diabetes. Several years ago on this board, we were all concerned with attempting to get everybody aware of these disastrous complications. Yes, there were many varied approaches to these problems but our efforts were to help diabetics improve their lives through better understanding and better control. We also stressed being a better patient so that our doctors could better administer to our needs. It seems that we no longer are interested in helping diabetics to better understand the disease that they have to live with or die with. We discourage the people that want help from coming here for it. We are much more concerned about nit-picking other caring diabetic's posts, or getting mad at an insurance company for not furnishing every item needed to counteract our bad habits. We do not look to the insurance company's to pay for all of the crap that we ingest which is commonly called food, that sends our BG levels and/or our waistlines soaring out of control. We say that we just can't live without that piece of cake, that bread or pasta with all of the yummy tasting butter, sauces or gravies that make us want more. Lets try to get back to the basics of helping diabetics become more aware of what diabetes is and what we each have to do to improve out lifestyle while co-existing with diabetes. There are still a lot of newbees out there that are desperately looking for help that each of us can offer positive input if we can find out more about their individual problem. Everybody here (the nit-pickers including me), will agree that the knowledge of balanced nutrition and an exercise program is beneficial to all diabetics. This varies from diabetic to diabetic. Not even the most astute endocrinologist can adequately and accurately have sufficient facts available for the best diabetic management program for each patient, each visit. We are not the best at keeping records of what they need to make their judgement calls (sometimes calles guesses). Each of us has something positive to offer that can be of major benefit to all of us, especially the newbees that are out of control and very confused. Can't we try to get back to helping diabetics again? Gordo

Hi Marc! I must protest here! I have never used the terms "fat cow" to describe anyone here, A detractor used it. Second, onprepared? I hardly think so. I keep my AIG in the 5-6 range. Hardly poor control. Third, I have never said that wheatgrass is a cureall or organic foodstuffs are a cureall either for that matter! My point has been that nutrients can be used to handle certain problems. Not all, but some. Fourth, I do have things wrong with me. I have had recurring cellulitis in my left foot, which calls for careful foot care. I take accupril daily (an ace inhibitor). BTW, my post listed things I don't have trouble with, at least not yet. BTW, I have two cousin s with D, one is blind; the other has his cousin's kidney. I have always been serious about control. That is why I steer clear of fast food, fried foods, concentrated sugars, and saturated fats I think hooking up for lunch might be a good idea! CB

Rashid, You say your blood sugars are always high! Because of your diet. All I can say to you is, at the age you are right now, you need to try your best to control your blood glucose levels, bye what ever means you can. If you do not do this right now, then later on you are going to have many complications. Due to your lack of control. It is very important to watch what we eat, and get enough exercise. It is also very important to do the monitoring of blood glucose daily. It is not normal at all to have very high glucoses. Please do not waste time, get busy and try to keep your sugars within the range that they should be.

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY to all the Mother's out there!!! Although I have no children of my own, I've fostered 15 over the years and know how you feel. I only come in here once or twice a week anymore. I got tired of all the fighting going on. I can get that from the West Wing clubs I belong to. Not to mention my own Mother. Being 45 I can think of a lot of reasons for the aches and pains, bad temper days, growing need for new glasses and other "things" that some people seem to only want to blame on having diabetis. I call it "living life". My BS is up and down, like most people's, 214 is the highest though and I know it could be wrose. I rebel against the constant schedule and the feeling that diabetis is controling my life and not visa versa and I get angry that my insurance will only pay for enough test strips to check BS once a day. But, that's the challenge I've got right now. I do my best. Why get angry and post my frustrations or take out my anger on others here that may be having a bad day too? I just don't see it. Sorry. I hope all of you are having great Spring/Summer days and are feeling good (or at least better) about life...... Toad

So let me get this straight CB, from your last post I can summize that anyone who has eye problems, foot problems, kidneys, heart, nerve and any of the other problems this great disease can cause, well are we to feel responsible? Should we look at you and think, well damn I might see better if I only would have put down that taco and lived on wheatgrass? Your right, it could change, and one day it will. And you won't know what hit you, you are the most unprepared of anyone I have seen. And if you don't like to be attacked, here are some samples you post that piss people off. Fat Cows, people can control their diabetes if they got off their sedetary butts, and followed Tony Robbins aka CB's advise. Also, you brag about nothing wrong with you, well good for you, i wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. But don't you dare try to insiuate that any one of us should throw any more guilt onto the heap off crap some of us deal with daily with this disease. You have no understanding at all to what one goes through mentally when something goes wrong, and I don't need some Popeye loving Napoleon wannabe telling me I should look at the fact that he has diabetes for over 40 years with no this and no that. Enough is enough CB, I have an idea. You live close to me, why don't I drive to you, we can meet for lunch and I could look you in the eye when I tell you what a pathetic loser you are. My name and e-mail are on this, I am proud to oppose your views.......Marc W.

To (), For the record, I am not trying to make anyone feel stupid. I am diabetic too. I am at risk for complications too, just like everybody else here. It just gets a little old to be attacked for posting valid info! It gets old when stomach problems can often be taken care of with yogurt daily, (with living acidophilus) or enzyme capsules. I post, and get attacked. I have been diabetic well over 40 years. At 53, I still have my vision; I can walk without pain, I can push around 200 lbs in the gym. I have no joint, tendon, or ligament problems. By G-d's grace this is true now. It could, of course change. I doubt very much my diet would cause serious complications. As a bodybuilder, I should be ingesting 150gms protein daily. I am well below that figure. I am somewhat smaller and weaker because of it, but there is no alternative to this. Sorry for the long post, had to speak my mind.

Why stress the system with the plethora of poisonous chemicals used in processing? Sadly, the poster is ignorant. Some clarifications....Yesterday's posts did not deal with proterin intake, That being the case, labeling the dietary suggestions "a diet of death" was wrong. Fish oils, flaxseed oil, cold pressed olive oil are all better choices than margarines and std. cooking oils. Browm rice is higher in fiber, as are whole grain organic breads. Vitamins from whole foods are better absorbed than the chemicals that make up Centrum. This is standard stuff! About carb and fat loading, if 90% of calories come from carbs and fat, you ARE carb and fat loading. Total calories make no difference! Again, I am not addressing protein intake! Gotta get to the gym and get freaky! heh heh!

I can't tell you how mad that post makes me because I am a Bush supporter but have read that last week in the LA Times. I think they are having OK results with adult stem cell research which will maintain it's funding, and private industry will be the ones to carry this thru to a cure, not a federally funded group. But as a supporter I am less than thrilled with the Bush administration putting up more obstacles (sp)to deal with. But that news is encouraging, plus there was a drug approved yesterday that had great results in treating cancer. I don't know the info on that but it looks as though we should see some of those breakthru's we hear about everyday. On the Viox issue, I said this many times. My doc won't allow me to take it because of adverse effects on the kidneys. He actually would rather treat the pain with narcotics (oxycontin) then let me take Viox. Just his opinion, but something to look into if your taking it. And as Toad said, they have adverse stomach reactions too..... Marc W

Marc, I've taken Vioxx for the past two years for torn lig. in my knees and the artheritis and the torn rotary cup in my shoulder. HAH! Ya know after 45 I started to fall appart!!! :+) If I take it at night without something on my stomach and lay down within an hour, I get to feeling sick to my stomach the rest of the night. I also take celebrex at times. Gives about the same relief but doesn't upset my stomach it seems. I really don't know where the "mostly for mental pat." comes from. Vioxx is just the medical world's latest wonder drug for ouchies. :+) I hope this helps some. FAYE; Thanks sooooo much for the ice cream cookie!!! Just in the nick of time too... I've been baking for two weeks for funerals and now Mother's Day and was about to go nuts.(Have done pretty good tho, only licked the spoon once. Hi Faith,Misty, here is some info on Vioxx:(copied from medical patient brochure):"Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug which reduces joint swelling, pain of arthritis. Drug is prescribed for relief of osteoarthritis. (Joint disease-result:gradual breakdown of cartilage in spine, result:inflammation, stiffness, physical disability." It is a fairly new drug;not supposed to cause stomach problems. Since my vertibre were fused when I was born, this seems to be the result. Luckily,I am feeling better. My concern is that recently,my vertibre (spinal cord) have begun to cause pressure on my heart. It had affected my breathing, since I have asthma,it made it worse. If it works,then,well-I'll see what my x-rays show. Can't have surgery;would cause a stroke. Main concern:how long can I continue in my job, with disability (spine) becoming more curved. So far,I feel much better. Bs had gone down in the three days;ranging from 5.3(fasting) to 9. I'm at stage where "D:" more frustrating to deal with. Doing best I can.

Hi there. I haven't posted in a long time. After taking several x-rays of my spine and neck,my GP put me on Viox. Anyone on it? I'm to try it for 2 weeks,to ease the pain. It seems to,to a pretty fair degree. I'm on 25 Mlgrm each day. How does it affect bs? I'm now measuring mine 6 times a day. (keeping a diary) I had been in alot of pain, really bad-sugars had been horribly-for almost 2 weeks had problems with controlling bs 'cause of the pain-spine is becoming more curved. Last Wednesday, when I fasted+ saw GP,my veins kept collapsing, too cold. they had to get the blood from my hand. I'm feeling better now, though. My spine had become very brittle-pressing into my heart. CB:or Marc W,any exercises I could do to help with this? My GP thinks it is osteoarthritis.
