I have been diagnised with type 1 1/2 !! diabetes... Anyone ever hear of it?? I am not truly TypeII as I lost 20 pounds and nothing happened to my fasting sugar... Also I have been trying many meds and combinations in the hope of bringing that FBS down. No dice. It is not too high 130 range but this is not acceptable to my dovtor. She wants it under 100. I was VERY exact about my diet habits, etc. but I seem to have fallen and have started BAD habits again. Once I eat something sweet or carb rich, I can't control my craving for more. Is this psychological??? I have only had Diabetes since February but was doing much better than now. I take 3 Glucophage XR and one Actos 30 at night.... Would love to hear from anyone. I am struggling with this total change in my life. Sometimes I just pretend I really don't have it. That is until I test in the morning. It really sets me up for a bad day when the number is high... Any help or comments will be appreciated. I feel so alone in this! Louise

World Heart Day, Sept 25 The blog site connected to this one had some considerations to avoid heart disease and other ailments. Regular activity, healthy eating, and weight control are all part of the program. Regular activity: Yeah lift!!! Also cardiovascular activity as well. This is easy to do. Use stairs instead of elevators, walk rapidly from car to store, When weather permits, use bicycle, etc. Healthy eating, super lean beef, buffalo, chicken/turkey breast, salmon, flaxseed oil, cold pressed olive oil. Low fat cheese, cottage cheese, etc. Digestion: yogurt with active cultures, garlic, enzymes Whole sprouted grain baked goods, yams, leaf lettuce, spinach, tomatos, red cabbage, parsley, kale, etc. BMI: Can be a problem! Those with greater musclemass will be heaver without being obese. The BMI is therefore geared toward the sedentary. Generally speaking, good stuff to think about!

Dear Perky: You might check with an MD who makes use of a nutritional approach to treat the problem. They are hard to find, but they are around.

My mother has diabetes and was diagnosed with diverticulitis. She is very concered because the low residue diet that they recommend obviously interferes with the diabetic diet she was given. Can you recommend a place where she might get a diet that is friendly for both. She visited 2 nutritionists and spoke with two doctors and all gave her different information. Now she is afraid to eat at all. Thanks for the help!

Dear Bigdog: To build on what grannypj said. Hopefully you are doing better now! Ideally, the majority of carbs should come from whole grains breads and pastas, brown rice, hummus, yams, etc. These will provide needed fiber and some vitamins. Try to stick to raw or lightly steamed veggies; leaf lettuce rather than head lettuce, raw spinach, tomatoes, etc. Try to get as much of your protein as you can from complete protein sources, that means animal flesh (chicken breast, turkey, buffalo, super lean ground beef, reduced fat cheese, cottage cheese, etc. As the food pyramid suggests, go with fresh fruits high in nutrients. A good multivitamin will help also. As for amounts I will defer to your dietition. Take care. Squats

If you have a really good GP who is willing to work with specialists and to learn anything he/she doesn't know then stick with! There are some really dangerous excuses for specialists and having dragged all over two states looking for the best care we settled on the family doctor who works closely with the team. You really have to have an opthamologist examine your eyes at least once a year because with early detection you can avoid or slow some complications. Don't mix that up with optometrist who just fits glasses and does tests. You might need a podiatrist too to keep your feet healthy. Keeping your teeth healthy is important. Most diabetics have a dietician to work with although that sure hasn't worked out in our case but the endocrinologist works very closely on the carb and protein counts etc. There is plenty of info online about what to eat. There are no bad foods but you have to keep the carbs in balance! That isn't just sugared foods but breads and things like potatoes, pastas. For years Pete did well on 3 carbs and 2 proteins per meal. Now he is counting every bite he eats and that is no doubt why the A1c came down to normal levels. Be sure your GP runs the A1c quarterly!

Thanks Squats and Sam. The ER had perfect ability to admit me (good insurance and my medical group maintains a bunch of hospital-only doc's). Basically my bs is same as it was since discharge. After taking me from 689 to around 300 I had a really good day. (Sam) I could even hear well after what I thought was sinus congestion. The rest of the weekend has not gone well. Can't quite work out what to eat, so I'm on Atkins, which is at least someting I know how to do. Feel tired, everything seems to take effort like walking under 200' of water. BTW, I'm a 47 year old male, about 80 lbs overweight on 6'3, and I just left a large consulting firm to start a one man firm. What I need more than anything is to regain energy, or the business falls apart. Any opinions about going to a specialist vs. my current, very good GP ? Thanks!

We finally hit the wall and Pete can no longer milk the cows which was the only thing he could do for income and activity. It's a darned shame since the little herd was making money. But Social Security still has yet to schedule a hearing. We have a lawyer, we have a congressman on this. There is a whole list of people in our area being stonewalled for Disability. Finally after 21 years of diabetes Pete is starting to have some of the side effects. Fibromyalgia has him laid low though worse than anything else in combination with early arthritis. The diabetes is largely uncontolled day to day but the A1c was in the 6 range for the first time in his life. So...we will stop paying our bills to pick up the family's support. What a bummer. Don't look for any increase in benefits as we try to raise $200BILLION to bail out the south. And here come two more hurricanes this next week. WHAT A WORLD

Dear bigdog. Exactly the same thing happened to me in 93'. I don't know why they didn't keep you. They sent me home too...after 3 days of lowering my sugar (I couldn't hear anymore) with insulin. They sent me with home with pills which did nothing. I had to go back & learn how to use insulin after 3 days. After another hospitalization! I am a type 1 diabetic..and I got it at 50! I wish you luck...keep writing here, there are a lot of informed people on this chat. Good luck.

Dear Bigdog: Just saw your post. Your glucose is still much too high! Don't know why you weren't admitted into hospital. At any rate, first priority is to get medication/diet/exercise balanced. That, hopefully, will be done on Monday. Keep communication open with your caregivers! What "works" per the charts doesn't always work in real life. Glucose levels and how you feel will say a lot. If either is off, you need to speak up. Hope it goes well with you. Squats PS: Learn as much as you can about diabetes and nutrition.

Weekend help for a diabetic newbie -- Suddenly diabetic and worried. Maybe you-all can help out until Monday when the whole health system willl come crashing in. Had been feeling poorly for about a month. Visit doctor on thursday and get urgent calls on friday. Glucose of 570 on thursday. "Get thee to the ER now" says MD on Friday. ER gets glucose of 698. Huge workup in ER, then 2 ltr saline fast along with potassium (don't know how much). Discharge glucose 305 and scripts for Lipizide and Glucophage. Buy blood testing stuff. Eat "Atkins" type diet (not really Atkins, but how I thik of it). Q: My glucose level is still about 305-315. Should it be lower by now (Saturday afternoon)? Q: While I feel better and think more clearly than I have in _months_, I still feel a little "out of it." Made an effort at a good stiff walk, but was ready to fall over after just a few blocks. Is this what I should expect at this stage? Q: Any and all advise for a newbie is appreciated! Cheers.

Dear Kash: Acidophilus is the bacteria that turns milk into yogurt. It is GOOD to eat yogurt. It does aid digestion, As I said earlier, make sure you buy yogurts that are pasteurized BEFORE the acidophilus is put in the milk. The heat from pasteurization will kill the bacteria.

Thanks () for the info on gastroparesis. I couldn't remember what it was at the time I posted. Very informative; you implied that an MD needs to be consulted if such develops.
