Sam: this is for a very poor friend of mine. She is 40, for some reason hasn't pursued the state option of insurance yet. Apparently she was covered at one time when she got the pump, but once insurance cancelled couldn't afford the supplies. She has all the documents she needs from physician. Can you refill/reuse tubing (i'm sure it is not recommended but is it feasible)? thanks

Cass...she will have to apply to the State she is in. Have her contact Minimed..they'll know. Older tubing clogs anyway..I don't think it'll work to re-use. Good luck. S,

I have heard about not mixing certain starches/carbs with meat in the past. and found it impractical and of doubtful benefit. The key is moderation and a wide variation of different foodstuffs. In the red meat category, there is buffalo, highin protein and low in fat; 4% fat beef is available. Whole sprouted grain breads are great. Yams are a good source of beta-carotenes, fiber, and low glycemic carbs. Unusual veggies can be a treat. Arigula and kale in a salad sprinkled with a little goat cheese and low-fat dressing can be a good change. With regard to fat, a little almond butter instead of margarine or butter is a good choice. "Normal" is a very relative term with blood sugar levels. Ask 5 doctors and you will get 10 different opinions (at minimum). The American Diabetes Association recommends that non-diabetics should have a pre-meal reading of under 100 and a post-meal reading of less than 110. Diabetics should strive for pre-meal readings of between 90 - 130 and a post-meal reading of under 180.

A couple of thoughts. (1) This is from www.diabetes.org re: a healthy diet. "A healthy diet is a way of eating that that reduces risk for complications such as heart disease and stroke. Healthy eating includes eating a wide variety of foods including vegetables, whole grains, fruits, non-fat dairy products, beans, and lean meats, poultry and fish. There is no one perfect food so including a variety of different foods and watching portion sizes is key to a healthy diet. Also, make sure your choices from each food group provide the highest quality nutrients you can find. In other words, pick foods rich in vitamins, minerals and fiber over those that are processed." Note that healthy eating includes a mix of items such as protein, carbs, some fats, and even sugar (from fruits for example). BALANCE is the key word when planning a HEALTHY diet. (2) Herbal supplements, like Circ-Flo and Perfect Food -- these are NOT endorsed or regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. There is no guarantees regarding their effectiveness or potency. Some supplements may interact poorly with some prescription medications. It is ALWAYS IMPORTANT to discuss adding any supplement beyond a multi-vitamin/mineral to your diet WITH YOUR DOCTOR. He/she can provide the best advice on what you can and CANNOT/SHOULD NOT take. I'd never take any over-the-counter supplement without asking my doctor FIRST.

brittle diabetes — A type of Type 1 diabetes in which the blood-glucose level fluctuates widely from high to low. Brittle diabetes can be caused by the complete loss of ability to produce any insulin, by too high an insulin dose, or by other factors. It can often be improved through a good treatment program. Also called unstable diabetes.

Richard: You are not fooling anyone who had at least a grade school education. Your attempts to distract readers from your original post are sadly futile. Your original point was to talk about some herbal supplements that are available through numerous Internet sites, some of which do hype them as "cures" for diabetes (Circ-Flo and Perfect Food). What should work for any diabetic is regular consultations with their own physician and development of a balanced diet that includes all food groups to help the individual keep and maintain healthy, stable blood sugar levels. Telling other diabetics that "I used in the beginning a product called Circu FLo, and about a year ago started a product called Perfect Food. 2 months ago I stopped all suppliments, and have had perfect readings, all normal I ate a huge burger, fries, pie with ice cream and had blood sugars of 140 2 hours later" is patently DANGEROUS. I wouldn't comment on the veracity of such a statement, as I'm not sure a non-diabetic would be able to each such a high-fat, high-carb, sugar-laden meal and have a blood sugar reading of 140 two hours later. Please continue to back-pedal from your original statements, Richard. It is interesting to watch your ever-changing song and dance routine.

Besides prey is also a wrong word to write. Got nothing to sell, peddle, or take from anyone. Any one who stands in the way of another recieving help and improvement might be dangerious. As adults we are to share and relate to others, things that "may be of assistance and help". To impede people from listening to accounts that may be helpful is much more dangerious. Sorry, when I was diagnosed, I delt with it as best as i could, changed things right away, and today I am living a life free of the symptoms ( neuropathy, disiness, blurred vision, tingling in the legs tired all the time), which I had btw, of this horrible disease. Does that mean if I started to eat on a daily basis like garbage I would be ok? Not on your life. I am different than you as you are different from me. What has worked for me is not mixing carbs and protiens try it for 2 weeks, it may help you. I have nothing to gain and you have everything to gain if it works for you. I say it with much love, not as an advasary, but simply as some one who wants to help. If it does not work then nothing lost.

You are using your words with an incorrect application. I do not push anything, nor did I say they are miracle cures. Only twice have I mentioned what I did and that is not touting. And what cover? Please re read what I wrote. No one should eat a high fat high carb high sugar diet who has diabetes. I stated what I ate and was amased at the results, I did not as you accuse, " starting pushing herbal supplements as some miracle cure that allows someone with diabetes to eat a high fat, high carb meal with no ill effects". That is where I am at today. You missunderstood what I wrote. And I am sure that if I ate like that every day my sugars would be back in the ugly zone. MY POINT IS FOOD COMBINATION, IT WORKS VERY WELL (for me and others)No carbs (starches) and protein. mixed together for 3 hours in between meals.

I need to know if I can use the same amount of regular insulin, with a longer time frame, of course. The pump people can't help. I have until September to figure this out. Thanks.

I do not mean any of the above words in an ugly manner nor have I ever attacked or demaned any one on this sight. So please refrain from your ugly, angry, and demeaning comments. I do not anticipate any appology, I suppose you will fling more trash at me and that is your choice. I too was diagnosed with this disease and have found what has worked very specifically for me. By not engaging in healthy dialouge who is endangering who? I do not want to hurt anyone and I have met a number of people who have done what I have done and sucessfully, without meds, lowered their sugars. Does that mean that any one should not take meds, no of course not, should they be open and see what works for their body, I would think any one should see what works for them and consult with their doctor. Do I want to see people helped of course. Do YOU?

Hi, Remember I said I have taken no suppliments for about 2 months. I am totally serious. Really no tall tales, I do not eat those things on a regular basis at all I just did it at the time cause I was curious. I am totally serious and I can document my diagnosis, and confirm that for years I had very high blood sugars. I just stated what I did and I am in amasement and do not have the answers. I am just telling what hapened. Many of my friends know how I have eaten for years, which has been very healthy an occasional burger, no fries, no sugar of any kind, no potatoes, rice, beans, starch, corn, etc, any thing like that for years. If you dismiss what I am saying you are dismissing my actual account and the truth. I did not know those 2 products claimed that. I am only saying what has happened in my life. Yeh I cant believe the "tall tale" either of the fries burger and ice cream. It totally shocked me. But it is what the meter said. And besides I am not peddling anything I have no interest in selling anything. Try not mixing carbs and protiens and see what it does. Look 3 years ago I was in shock that I was diagnosed with it, and I immediately dealt with it as I am sure you do. My one week average as of today is 108. Besides my wife has diabetes and not mixing carbs and protiens brought her levels down to the normal range. Her ac1 is in the 6's where it was in the 12's I believe before. However she takes medication. But very specifically the not mixing carbs and protiens at the same meal has kept her sugars down also. We both noticed that once we mixed bread and butter say our sugars went way up. But use promise spread which has no protien on bread and our sugars were not effected. Say what you will, think what you will. thanks for letting me express my thoughts.

Circu-Flo and Perfect Food are just a couple of alleged "super-supplements" marketed over the Internet as "cures" for diabetics. It would be wise for anyone to print information about these products and consult with your own doctor BEFORE ordering or taking them. Diabetics need to be very cautious about adding supplements or making changes to their diet without consulting with a doctor first. There are NO miracle cures for diabetes and certainly there is no supplement available that would allow a diabetic to eat "a huge burger, fries, pie with ice cream" and have resulting "blood sugars of 140 2 hours later." Sorry, Richard, but I am not buying your "tall tale."
