I have to take insulin...I make none. I am trying Lantus insulin today..going without the pump for a few hours. Shots don't bother me...I can't feel them anyhow. I am going to try more Lantus, and the Novolog pen when I eat. Insulin does more than lower blood sugar, though. I'll tell you how it went..cheers...

Maybe I will try to get off the pump. After all, I test a lot..tomorrow. I am too tired tonight, and you are right. This disease sucks...big time. 12 years, and no better. I got IDDM late in life. Many things come, to those who wait.

Sam. Why don't you give up that insulin pump of yours? It seems that your pump sure gives you all sorts of problems. I've been reading this site for years and yet again I read that your pump is acting up once again. I'm not sure which is better and more trust worthy shots or pumping. I've been taking injections for the past 43 years and still have highs and lows. This disease still really SUCKS after all these years.

I don't realize when I low sugar either. One night I woke up and was down to 32, thank god I woke up. I was in very bad shape to. So I guess it can happen to you wheather your on the pump or on shots. I met a sales man at the doctors office who gave me a bunch of info on a pump he was with mini med. I just don't think that it is for me.

My insulin pump, Minimed 508 has been good. But it's a machine. Last Saturday I went into insulin shock from a low-carb meal, with 4 units for the meal. I was asleep at 10, woke up at 3 a.m. with this shock, I could not think, walk, fortunately I was at my Daughters, she woke, and gave me juice. I was shaking and cold..I never want that feeling of dread again. I would not be alive had I been alone. I took the pump off. The pump screamed warnings all the next morning. I think I have it resolved, but I want to find another way. Plus Minimed has been taken over by Medtronic, the paperwork, mistakes in billing, horrible music while I wait on the phone, (dance of the sugar plum fairies for hours?) are endless. And the 508 is becoming obsolete soon. What drives me crazy is the unresolvable fear of this continuing. Mostly, the pump is great. But watch your levels in this new "low-carb craze"...you can bottom out & not know. I have no hypoglycemic awareness left.

For me Lantus is an 18 hr insulin. I can use it for a base, use Novolog for meals. But the 6 hours must be covered too. I go back to the pump then. I cannot use Ultralente..severe allergy. I want to get off the pump. Any suggestions? I have type 1.

You are on the same insulin as me, I think I take three shots of Humalog in the day time and the Lantus at night, even though my bm's are a little eratic If I had more will power they would be alot better, I find the insulin that I am on gives me a lot more freedom.

On Tue Jun 8 22:06:01 2004 Going Off Pump (is a challenge but worth it) said:
Lantis is the cadillac of long acting insulin just as humalog is for short acting. There is no better insulin for good control. I also went off the insulin pump and am back on injections and like it much better. The pump was a nuisance and didn't achieve better results. Hang in there it takes a while to get a good routine "re-established". I wasn't too excited about a new insulin delivery shedule and it has taken 6 months to get used to and running smoothly but is well worth the effort. I was on 2 injections before going on the pump and after the pump I am on 4 so took some getting used to but is working fine.

Babs: changing insulin therapies - even going back to something familiar - is very tricky and requires monitoring by a health professional. It sounds as if you are in a difficult position with your physician, but it also sounds as if he is giving you very little guidance. He is failing you and you deserve better! Your body is used to short-acting insulin and the introduction of long-acting may create havoc with your control for a while. I applaud your efforts to control your blood sugars in the manner that is best for you. I would urge you to use extreme caution and test faithfully while you make the transition. Good luck! By the way, I'm on pump therapy (and loving it!) after 16 years of injections. Thanks for helping me understand how fortunate I am that my regimen works so well for me!

I have been on an insulin pump for 2.5 years. I have decided to get off it since my A1Cs are the same (6.2-7.4)as on injection therapy. My dr. agreed to change me back to injections and put me on lantis and a novalog insulin pen. (the reasons for getting off the pump are many; have to use a basal higher than before because my pump does not deliver under .4per hour, because of that I eat more than i want to and have gained alot of weight; i react to the surgical tape; I cannot use magnet therapy with the pump for severe tendonitis; i do not have many insertion sights due to scar buildup and inability to reach other sites due to restricted motion in arms; it has never been comfortable to wear and most of all; after 40 years of being diligent about my health, the pump offers me too much freedom..so not eating breakfast and stretching my diet requirements due to ease of introducing more insulin) Sorry, for all that but most people ask why when i tell them I am returning to injections. However, I am very confused. The lantis does not allow me to mix insulins and I want to go back to what i was previously on (can't remember but think it was ultralente) so that I can mix the morning dose and then just use a pen for bolus delivery. Also, the pen he gave me is huge! I would like to go on a system that allows for a long lasting insulin that can be mixed and a pen that using a short acting that has a smaller more convenient less noticable pen. Hope this all makes sense. Please do not ask me to speak to my dr. It takes months to get in to see him and I need to have information and facts before he gives me advice without giving me the options. Can you help me with some options So: What other long lasting insulin is available that is like lantus but can be mixed. and what smaller pens are available with short acting isulin. Thank you for any or all the advice you can give

Rainbow girl, What I found most helpful was studying the info on the websites about the glycemic index. I pretty much guide my food intake by the glycemic counts of foods (the various rates at which individual foods convert to sugar in the body). All bread is not equal, for instance. A sturdy piece of whole grain bread is going to do a whole lot less damage than a snowy white piece of Wonderbread. There are a number of sites that come up when you do a search for "glycemic index".

Shari, must admit I agree with Squats' assessment. In my experience (7 years since being diagnosed Type II), the three CDEs I've dealt with all seemed to take a "one size fits all" approach to nutrition. I had one CDE tell me that if one serving of white potatoes was sending my readings into orbit, then I was apparently lying about portion size ! I haven't consulted with a CDE or RD since. I seem to do far better fine-tuning my nutrition with peer information and detailed monitoring of what does and does not work for me and only me. Once you weed through the poatings on this site and learn to separate the pearls from the pig poop, there is much information from peers that is valuable. They've gained their knowledge from personal experience, rather than from the printed page.

Shari: Thanks for your request! I have found that some care providers (ironically!) need help themselves. I am on a sliding scale insulin regimen since my activity varies greatly from day to day. For exercise, I lift, and I train hard at the gym, e.g. shoulder presses at 90 lbs. I know of no Practicioner, RD or CDE who knows what people who do this need. For example, I use a vitamin pak that has 500% of the RDA for vtamin E. I use a B Complex with Igm/Vitamin C. I take tribulus, an herb which also helps. People I have talked with in the "standard" categories do not know anything about preventing muscle loss, which seems to be the effect of the mainline dietary/"exercise" approach. Thanks, Squats

On that total carbs point in my post from yesterday, always look at servings per container. Example: The fruit cup has 20gm total carbohydrates, so you eat the whole thing not even noticing that it said there were 2 servings in that container. You just consumed 40 gm carbs and didn't even see it. Read labels closely. HI GORDO!

Be careful with sugar-free products. Just because they say sugar free doesn't mean they won't raise blood sugar. All carbohydrates break down into sugar in your bloodstream. Take sugar free hot cocoa mix. It still has about 28gm of TOTAL carbohydrates. One cup will probably jack you good. Learn what the GOOD carbs are. White potatoes, BAD. Sweet potatoes, MUCH BETTER. Please see a diabetic dietician and get yourself educated. This should be the first step a diabetic should take IMO. Jim

Hi everybody! Here are my takes on somethings that have been posted. 1. Weight loss; think FAT loss! Muscle use, such as in weed pulling, uses more energy simply because it requires more moving. To reduce bodyfat, spread out meals (4-6 feedings) Lower carbs and fat, and raise protein (note! Kidney problems may not allow this depending on severity.) However, bear in mind, that the proteins in starches are usually broken down into sugars since the amino acid profiles are insufficient to be usable for muscle repair and strengthening. While it is true thast the body can combine some incompletes to make completes, the net result is a loss of usable protein. Therefore, it might work to not count plant proteins (I do not!) and aim for 100% good protein intake. (Keyword "biological value" should bring up places where you can download it. Benefits of protein: 1. Increased metabolic rate 2. Muscle tissue maintenance or increase 3. Immune system strengthening. If complications do not prevent: Alternate weights and cardiovascular work. Example: To start Monday- upper body, Tuesday-Cardio (treadmill, etc.) Wednesday-lower body-legs, Thu-Cardio, Friday-upper body. It is important to take fruit and protein after yoour session! There is a one hour window when you need to take this stuff! Hope this helps those who need to drop fat! Squats
