I have recently been diagnosed with diabettes. We have not determined if it is Type 1 or Type 2 however; my doctor has put me on pills. My sugar levels were between 18 and 25 before I started to control it. They are now between 8 and 16 (on average). I have been exercising everyday, eating much better with advice from my doctor and will be seeing a specialist in February. What are the key issues with diabettes? How will it affect me if I am not able to get it under control? What works for everyone to get the sugars back to normal and will they ever be back between 4-7? What are people eating to control it? I am very concerned and want to get this under control but I am struggling. Please help me understand more. Thanks in advance. Kevin

Evelin: What is your father's diet like? It sounds like his carb intake may be too high.

On a24 hour fast, you will lose muscle tissue as it is broken down to provide energy. 101 is within limits, but it could be "spiking" after meals. A test for diabetes is never out of line. Assuming that you are non-diabetic for the moment, seek out a competent trainer who will get you started on exercising right and eating right.

I fasted for 24 hrs as part of a fad diet(dumb I know)ended up having a seizure after 24 hours of only water and 3 hours of singing and dancing with the choir I'm in(I am epileptic)I thought my blood sugar would have been low but found out it was tested as 101 by paramedics..isn't that too high considering the fast and the exercise? I haven't been diagnosed with diabetes but my dad, an aunt, 2 uncles and my grandmother all have type two. I'm only 29 but am about 40 lbs over weight. just looking for some unproffessional insight before I bug my doc. thanks.

Amy, Last I read, 2 hours after meals it should be lower than 140, fasting AM 80-100, and just before meals <120. Check with your doctor, though. He/she is the best one to ask.

I have attacked the governmental "fat" pyramid before. Educated trainers I know (College-educated!!!!, degreed) don't bother with it. I am getting argumentative again, I know. Nobody say that it is a valid approach, 'cause it makes people fat, obese!! I don't bother with it and I am doing fine; blood sugar control is good. Strength is good also. Every body is different, so, listen to your body and learn from it.

Since every body is different, what works for fat loss will also be difficult! "Weight" loss, as a category, needs to be forgotten. It doesn't really address the problem. Fat loss, especially for us diabetics, can be tough. What needs to go into the mix is what your body actually needs to maintain itself (that may not be what the charts say!), activity level, including type of job. medication, complications, type of exercise: If you lift weights, you need a different diet from people who just do cardio-vascular exercise. Once the doc gives the ok, a few sessions with a competent trainer can help. I am skeptical of most popular "diets", since they fail to provide necessary carbs, (complete) proteins, and fats. One last thing, I discovered a misleading euphemism, "incomplete+ (veggie) protein, was called "complementary" in an article I read. Ideally, one should pop amino acid tabs or dring an amino acid liquid to get all necessary for benefit from exercise. Whew! Longest post in a while, but I hope this helps! Squats

What do you think about the South Beach Deit?? It's not quite as strict as the atkins, you have more veggie and fruit choices. I'm type 1, not on it but have been looking at it. I have noticed that the stores are carrying more low carb products and there's alot of commmerce's on tv, because they think the world is obse. But you know, it's not everyone's choice to be over weight. Sometimes it just happens and people don't realize how hard it is to get the fat off until you've been a least 50 pounds over weight. It's not easy.

Adkins? It does work! However, use by diabetics can be risky, especially for type 1's. I refer not just to kidney problems, but also ketosis from rapid burning of body fat. Fat loss is best accomplished by: moderate decrease in carbs, fat restriction to 10-15 percent of total calories, moderate increase of protein intake (from meat, milk, eggs, cheese, and fish. Judicious use of blended protein powders can help also. The context: A mixture of strength training and cardiovascular exercise, on different days, is necessary. Personally, I have a meal replacement shake made with a good MRP (Lean Body, Micellean, Isopure, etc, NOT CHOICE NOR GLUCERNA!!!!!!) and pineapple juice after a workout. It helps!

Can someone tell me if carbs "seep" into other foods during cooking? For instance, if I make chicken soup and add noodles or rice for my family, will I add carbs to my diet by eating the chicken and/or broth?

Hi, Diane; Gymnema Sylvestre is great before a sweet, to block the sugar from entering your bloodstream (for me, it takes away taste too!) but doesn't do a thing for diabetes. I am interested in the Vanadium, which helps all of us, but wasn't available. Thanks for that info! I am a type 1, and I do have the numbness when glucose is low, all over, but know that my meter will tell me where I am at, what works, and what to do, basically. Hope you take your Magnesium, folic acid and Omega 3 fatty acids too. Cut back slowly on meds..you are going an alternative route (great!) but no Physician will help you with it. Good luck.

I awoke early this morning with severe numbness in my left hand. (This led me to the discovery of your Site and I realised that I am not the only one with this complaint). This had happened a few times before and I had attributed it to the fact that I sleep on my left side, until I noticed that the numbness was accompanied by low blood sugar. I checked my blood and sure enough my sugar was low. I think that this has something to do with some new natural medication which I have begun to take. I am a type 2 Diabetic (I like to think of myself as being 'naturally sweet'), and recently started taking fenugreek tablets and alpha lipoic acid along with gynmena sylvestre (gynema - 75 ayurved series)and Chromium plus Vanadium by Trophic. As I usually take 2 Metformin and 2 Diamicron tablets twice per day, I will now have to decrease the medical tablets to avoid a reoccurrence of this situation. Diane
