Hi everyone. I haven't
posted for a while so thought I would catch you up on my situation. I've been
diagnosed with type 2 for about 5 weeks now. The Dr. started me out on Avandia
and with exercise my sugar was lowered about 50-60 points-- from 280's to mostly
220's. After a couple of weeks on Avandia, I was switched to Glucovance and my
sugar now is pretty much "normal" (80-120) without even exercising. All other
tests (prostate and colon) came back fine so I guess I have to believe that my
weight loss (25 lbs over 6-7 months before being diagnosed) was caused by the
diabeties as my Dr. suspected. Somehow, I find it hard to believe that my
diabeties could have been bad enough to cause that kind of weight loss yet
relatively easy to control once diagnosed. Comments welcome!!

I was diagnosed when I was 28, have
been on insulin ever since. It runs on my dads side of the family. Have several
Aunts and Uncles and cousins that have it. My mom has three bothers and one
sister and all five of them know have late life adult diabetes type 2.So I guess
it all depends.

(nalini.ved@usoncology.com) I am an insulin diabetic i was diagnosed when I was
25, I am the only diabetic im my family, so I dont think it is hereditary, my
doctor told me that they dont know why people get it, she says that mine could
have been caused by stress, as I was under an extreme amount of stress at the
time. but who knows what causes it ????

FYI: I was not
genetically pre-disposed to diabetes originally. As a child, in 1953, I was
exposed to the sprayed compound: "Zinc-Cadmium-Sulfide" by the U.S. Military, as
a cold war experiment. They sprayed my gradeschool. The chemical lodged in my
bones, the Mayo Clinic suggested. So, type 1 diabetes at..50! I was unlucky..by
walking down the street in the U.S.A.. As part of an auto-immune syndrome, that
is killing me. I am one of many!!! Senator Wellstone D-Mn. (rest his Soul) tried
to help us. I had a conference call, with many who were in hiding. Don't think
these experiments are over!!! We are guinea pigs... I am angry tonight...if you
came from Mpls, Mn, or St Louis, Mo. know...the Government is not to be
trusted!!! These records came out of Ft. Detrick MD. in 1994'...anyone curious,
write. I have nothing to lose anymore.

It is hereditary, but it is also
brought on by being over weight, stress, other medical problems can also bring
it on.

We
are discussing about diabetes. I am saying it is hereditary and other person do
not agree with me. According to her it is not proven, it just puts you at higher
risk.

Amen Betty! This site is quoting the
"newest form of treatment" for gastroparesis as the drug Propulsid! Great - -
except not. Propulsid was yanked by the FDA a few years ago.

I count carbs also, Betty..hard to
do on the road, where I have been on & off for 3 months now. But I know my
ratio, if it goes too high, I know what to do. And my pump lost it's settings,
had to re-program another. These are small things..but at my Ex's funeral,
afterwards, I ate cake with his family. So sweet to me, awful tasting, but still
a "rite of passage". I feel strange being officially a Widow. A type 1 Widow, 61
years old, and I lost 3 good friends this year. Life is short, live today, fully
conscious, with love.

I have been an
insulin-dependent Diabetic for 44 years. I was scanning the Teaching material
page and looking at some of the advice that is given, re: diet and how to
control Diabetes. One thing I noticed is that the advice concerning sugar is an
ancient way of treating Diabetes. Carb counting is what helps us to control our
disease. The teaching materials information needs to be updated.

Herb..beginning cataracts here too,
diagnosed 10-20-03. Does this happen to everyone over 61? Now I have to drive
900 miles today & tomorrow, alone..to Michigan, where my Ex's family are
gathered for the last wait..he is comatose, cancer, was very fast. In June he
was fine. I had dinner on the Empire builder train, last visit. It was great.
Nice dinner partners, the food suited my diabetic choices. I appreciate
everyone's posts. Just to know you are all there, and diabetic too..helps me.
Oh, and my pump malfunctioned so I have to wait for a replacement this a.m.
before I can leave. Such is life. Good day to you all. Sam.
