NEEDCOFFEE: Just eliminating sugary drinks will not control blood sugar as Grannypj said below. For example, white flour is just as bad as sugar. Better to go with whole grain breads and pastas. Fats can be deadly. Cold pressed oils, flaxseed and olive, can help provide essential fatty acids. Just thought I would add a couple of helpful points!

I checked out Inositol. I guess it helps lower bodyfat percentages. I use L-Carnitine by Prolab to help lean up.Doesn't take much to work, so it is safe to use.

Good morning everyone. It's supposed to get near 90 degrees here today. Oh well so much for fall. We took a drive this weekend with Scott and Becky over the Talimena drive. This is a scenic drive in the "mountains" of southeast Oklahoma that is especially beautiful when the fall leaves are in full color. We were about 2 weeks early. The leaves are just beginning to change. It runs from Talahina Oklahoma to Mena Arkansas. (Clinton's drug headquarters) We went by Heavener and stopped so Scott could see the Runestone. Heavener is quite a railroad town. We ate supper in and old-old railroad car that used to make the trip to and from Chicago and New Orleans called the Southern Belle in the heydays of the steam railroads. It was absolutely beautiful inside with all the dark wood paneling and molding. And the food was good. We go to OKC tomorrow for my cataract surgery. Be back Friday, see all of you then. Papabear

but...a grandson was born premature in an emergency C-section; got a craniosynostosis diagnosis on our 18 month old grandchild - they need to remove her skull in pieces and restructure it; and just as the floor seemed to be coming back up under us we got the call that the son-in-law in Iraq who has been ambushed before was wounded on Friday. So right now Pete's 59s at lunch or even 39 at breakfast don't sound quite as earth-shattering as usual. We aren't sure why he doesn't pass out but he has been shakey lately when they are low. MANDY - the longer you are diabetic the more difficult it is to feel the highs and lows coming on. HERB - we have a son with uncontrolled seizures and it is a really rough go - hope they find a control SOON for your daughter. TOM- there aren't many words to say but keep on keeping on! SAM - just ignore "IT". The prayer support at this site is appreciated. NEEDCOFFEE - cutting "sugary drinks" is NOT controlling your diabetes, you have to count your carbs. Immediate highs or lows don't indicate anything specific which is why the quarterly A1C bloodwork is so important. Just keep trying to figure it out. Folks like Sam and Herb and Tom and Squats can really help you a lot!

18:17 and 18:18 You have my sympathy. It must be terrible to have such a dismal existence that you cannot see good, happiness, or any thing positive in this life. I cannot say that I don;t have problems but despite the problems I have I prefer to try and live life postively. I sincerely wish that you could experience the same out of life. Herb

I love this time of year. The days are bright and sunny in the 70’s and nights cool in the 50’s. We don’t have to run either the AC or the furnace. The leaves are beginning to turn and the husks are beginning to open on the pecans on our trees. We’ve mowed the grass for the last time this year. Deer season is next month. Got home from OKC at 2:00 AM this morning. Session with Jim Thorpe Rehab went well. They are teaching me how to walk on my prosthesis. I never thought what an effort it would take for a 65 year old man both mentally and physically to walk. My Endo appointment was great. My A1C was 5.1. He gave us samples of a tremendous amount of my medicines. I wish the heart doctor would do the same. Beth had 6 tremendous seizures back to back just before we left OKC last night. They have increased her seizure medications again despite the danger to her liver and organs. We are just prayerfully waiting for the doctors to acquire the VNS device. Scott and Becky are here. We are going to go on a drive southeast of here tomorrow to look at the hills and trees. We are not sure where we are going to put all of Becky’s stuff. But glad to have her home. Papabear Herb

Sam-- thanks so much. You have been very helpful and supportive in responding to my posts. I've been running/walking daily and last night 2 hours after eating and jogging my sugar was down to 159. This morning it was back up to 193. I am still worried about me losing weight before the diagnosis-- if my blood sugar is this easy to bring down (diet, excercise, and pills) I don't see how it could have been bad enough to really be the cause of my weight loss. Colonoscopy scheduled for next week. I'll be relieved after those results.

Dear needcoffee...caffine never raised my sugar..I do drink a lot of coffee. If you drink it black, there should be no problem unless it makes you "jittery", then perhaps it'll raise your sugar. But I am no M.D.... coffee. My last vice!!! Yes, carbs ARE sugar..the higher the fiber, the less they hit your bloodstream. Use whole grain breads, & get a carb-counting book. Read & learn about diabetes.

Hi everybody. Jodi and I are leaving shortly for OKC. I have my weekly appointment with Jim Thorpe Rehab in the morning so they can check my progress with the exercise program. Then I have an afternoon appointment with my Endo tomorrow afternoon. We will spend the night tonight at Beth’s house. When we come home tomorrow evening Scott (Becky’s fiancée) and Becky will be travelling along with us. Scott will be pulling a trailer since Becky is moving home to live with us. She has been living with her sister Beth and this is no longer practical. Particularly since she is in the beginning stages of the same disease that Beth has. Every time Becky looks at her sister she has to ask herself whether or not that is where she is going. And she knows the answer. Will see all of you on Friday. Herb

what about caffine? Should I be cutting back on caffine as well as sugar in drinks? What effect does caffine have? I really haven't adjusted my diet except for sugary drinks and I've eliminated all sugary snacks. What about carbs in general... carbs in other foods. Don't carbs turn into sugar? Should I cut back on other carbs in my diet?

Needcoffee..yes, you are probably passing sugar in your urine at those levels. You can buy keytone strips at the drugstore to test it. Learn & read...everything's important now. Diet also. There is a renal threshhold, I believe it's about 150-180 blood sugar levels, that your kidneys begin to excrete glucose.

If blood sugar is over 240, does this mean you have sugar in urine as well and are losing weight at this level because of ketones? I am newly diagnosed-- see some of my posts earlier. I've been on 2 mg/day Avandia for less than 2 weeks. I am exercising daily and have completely eliminated sugary drinks but not doing anything else diet-wise. Readings are still 210-260 most of the time. At time of diagnosis (type 2, I guess) I had already lost 25 lbs over about 7 months, had 9.7 A1c and 286 fasting.
