Herb...don't worry, that happens sometimes on this chat. So good to read your messages, although I am very sorry about your Daughter, Beth. I am losing a 30+ year friend to cancer (Ex-Husband, too...),it is awful, he is in & out of a coma now. I sure understand pain & loss. And fear, he has fear. I am having a hard time dealing with this. I can't say "don't worry, it'll get better"...it won't. This guy's not Spiritual, but I do believe in Angels, and I did say " one day/night...Someone will come, and tell you wonderful things. You will trust this person, whether It has wings or not. It may not be female, or male, but It will be wonderful, and will know you. Follow what It says... It MAY lead you Home." I always leave room for Mark to make his own choices, but this has been my experience, and he trusts me enough to look. Peace to all who grieve this day.

GORDO, SAM, SQUATS, TOM, it sure is great to see you old timers posting again. It is also great to see this site returned to being close to what it once was. Gordo, how is being remarried at your age agreeing with you? LOL Where are you living? Are you getting to travel as much as you wanted to? Squats, thanks for the info. I am not trying to totally eliminate the carbs like the Atkins diet. Having been hospitalized a few years ago with total kidney failure total elimination scares me. I am restricting myself to one reasonable serving per meal. Doing this with the exercises I'm doing is working. I have 3 different kinds of exercises I do, leg exercises I do laying on the bed. upper body exercises with a big rubber band that I do sitting in the wheelchair, and standing with the prosthesis on. I'm not to try walking yet. Tom, I am so sorry to hear about your cancer. I know how scary that kind of news can be. The drs. gathered the family around my bed and told them to say goodbye 4 times. BUT, I am still here! Hang in there buddy. I will be thinking about you and praying for you. Herb

GORDO, SAM, SQUATS,TOM, It sure is good to see you guys names again. I'm sure that there are other old timers posting but my memory is so bad you guys are the only ones I recognize. It's also great to see the site has returned to being close to what it once was. Gordo, old man, where are you living? And how is being remarried at your age agreeing with you? Are you getting to travel like you had planned? Squats, thanks for your comments. I am not trying to totally cut out carbs like the Atkins diet calls for. Having been hospitalized with total kidney failure years ago that kind of scares me. Basicly I am limiting myself to one reasonable serving of carbs per meal. And I am not emphasizing the protein however. I am emphasizing all the vegetables either fresh or frozen. Tom I am so sorry to hear about your cancer. Having had the doctors call the family around my bed 4 times to say goodbye to me I know how scary this can make you feel. I will be thinking about you and praying for you friend. Gotta go now. See you guys later. Papabear

Herb: Thanks for the update! On the diet, 60% carbs is 900 calories, or 225 gms, or 15 servings of carbs per day. I am scared to ask what fat and protein intake is! Good for you in speaking up.

Tom: RE Boost, check the ingredients! EAS makes a better product. There are also a few meal replacement powders without maltodextrin, using instead whole grains as a carb source. They can be made up ahead of time and used 1/2 serving at a time.

Hi everyone! I feel like I need to introduce myself. I am known as papa bear real name Herb. I am a 65-year-old diabetic who has really missed all of you. Jodi and I just got home after being gone since August. Beth has been in and out of ICU twice in that time span. She is now waiting to have a Vega nerve stimulator installed in her body in an attempt to control the seizures. The level of medication required to control them will destroy her liver and some other organs in just a short while. So we are awaiting word on the availability of the device. During her first stay in ICU I collapsed while making a transfer from the bed to my wheel chair. The family called the EMT’s who determined that I was in respiratory distress. They hauled me to the ER on oxygen. I was in the hospital for well over 2 weeks. Beth was out of ICU at this point and we were 3 doors from each other on the same hall. Something good did come from all this however. Jodi in her experience as an LPN had been assessing me for 3-4 months as I had been transferring in and out of the bed to my wheelchair and in and out of the van. It was her opinion that I had been growing weaker and weaker for that 3-4 month period. So from my hospital bed I approached my Cardiologist and said. Doc, I know that you have said that you do not want me to exercise because of my heart. BUT, this is ridiculous. Regardless of how little I eat I just continue to gain weight and continue to get weaker and weaker. I have got to do something about this and have to do it NOW! After thinking for a few minutes he said, “Jim Thorpe Rehab has a branch right here in this hospital. They have a fantastic reputation. Let me see what they have to say.” After he set some very stringent limits for my blood pressure and heart rate they established an exercise program for me. Scott Sabolich sent a prosthetist to he hospital and they refitted my prosthesis. I am not supposed to walk on it yet. I am just to stand up on it using a walker and see how long I can stand there without elevating my blood pressure or heart rate. We had to get a home blood pressure cuff that I can wear while exercising. I had to do battle with the dietician while in the hospital. The doctor prescribed a 1500-calorie ADA diet for me. I could not believe the carbs I was served. One meal I had chicken and dumplings, a large breakfast biscuit, a dinner roll, and a big piece of white cake. This was after my first discussion with the dietician. In our second visit she countered with the fact the ADA calls for 50-60% of a diabetic’s diet to be carbs. I explained to her that my system will not tolerate that level of carbs and that I wanted no dinner rolls, no potatoes, no rice, and no pasta, and she agreed. My only problem then was that they were serving me too much food. I had a third meeting with her and cut the calories from 1500 to 1200. Once I got my diet under control with the exercises I was doing I lost 5 lbs. while in the hospital. I was also able to reduce my Lantus from 60 units a day to 30 and have not taken any Humalog to boost it in weeks. We will return to OKC on a weekly basis so I can check in to Jim Thorpe as an outpatient so they can assess my progress. Jodi can check on Beth and we can have other Drs. appointments. I have seriously missed all of you and am looking forward to getting reacquainted. See all of you again tomorrow. It's great to see some of you old timers posting again. It's going to take me a while to catch up. I have over 2,000 E-mails to read. Papa Bear

I do not have any particilar knowledge in drugs, medications, or specific exercises for BG control. My body chemical understanding is rather limited, mainly to nutritional effects. I believe that there are some on here with knowledgeable comments on your request. Sorry old buddy. I am glad that you are getting help on your cancer. Gordo

Reading has already dropped to 226 by this afternoon compared to 354 yesterday. 24 hours on the pills and w/ no sugar drinks and already dropped 130 points-- is this expected? Now I'm beginning to worry that weight loss might have been due to something else if dropping my blood sugar is this easy.

Needcoffee...I sincerely don't think so, but could be wrong. It's the beta cells, in the islet of langerhans..beta cells produce insulin. If you are over 50, overweight..the insulin your body produces is not enough...cannot get into the cells. Fat fills the locks, insulin is the key..but can't get in. I am a type 1...did not dig too deeply into type 2 diabetes, but I do know levels. Ask your M.D. And good luck.

Sam-- thanks for the comments and chat. I guess I'm being overly pessimistic but couldn't there be other causes for high blood sugar-- like pancreas or liver disease or cancer?

The American Diabetes Association recommends the following blood sugar goals for people with diabetes: Before meals: Your pre-meal blood sugar should be between 80 mg/dL and 120 mg/dL. Your post-meal (1 to 2 hours after eating) blood sugar should be less than 180 mg/dL.

Needcoffee: Over 126-130...blood sugar..you are diabetic. If your blood sugar was 286, you are diabetic. There is no question. Over 140+ blood sugar, you are excreting glucose through your kidneys. That is the renal threshold. What your kidneys can tolerate, then they get rid of the sugar, any way they can. This causes damage. Not only to your kidneys,, but other organs. Get some help. Learn, read. If you don't have enough insulin, your body will use fat as a fuel. That causes weight loss. But may cause damage as well. People without diabetes never go over 125-ish blood sugar..even after a big meal. Sorry.

Got results of blood test (fasting glucose test) -- 250. I've read/heard that your suppose to have two tests before being diagnosed as diabetic. My doctor says that weight loss is "common" symptom even for adult type 2 diabeties-- he says the weight loss is typically the first thing that brings patients in for a checkup. PSA reading was fine. Colonoscopy not scheduled for another 2 weeks. Dr. says he's pretty sure my weight loss (25-30 pounds in 7-8 months) is a result of diabeties but we're having other tests (prostate and colon) just as a precaution since I'm 51 years old anyway. Comments? Advice? Thanks!!

Hello: I have a friend whose husband (age 90) suffers from diabetes. She asked me to find a Specialist for diabetes in Philadelphia PA -Northeast Section of the City. If there are none, than center city Philadelphia. I would like to offer her a few specialists to help her husband who is being treated by a general, primary doctor. One of her concerns is he is stable all day and at night before going to bed she gives him a snack of Ensure and a cookie. Upon waking up his levels are around 76 (I'm not sure of exact number) She needs to give him orange juice and then within 20 minutes he stabalizes. Any comments I can share with her. They don't have computer or email and I would like to help them.

They contain NO CODEINE or any other narcotic. They are primary central nervous system operants that block the pain messages in the spine and brain so no messages are received or sent - ergo no pain. They are not addictive BUT you do have to take them up slowly over about 6 weeks, monitor quarterly for kidney or liver damage which is irreversible if you get it, and you cannot stop them without weaning off over another 6 weeks.
