there are NO BAD FOODS however....you are craving CARBS and you are
taking them in sugars. If you stop the sugar you will no doubt start craving
other forms of carbs. But this level of carb intake is dangerous for you!
Fundamentally - and medical exigencies aside - you gain weight when you take in
more calories than you expend; you lose weight when you expend more calories
than you take in. However it isn't that simple. And you can't afford to continue
with this high carbs thing in any form! Get to a doctor as soon as you can! You
are sustaining damage in your fine capillaries when the bloodsugar is as high as
yours. Hyperglycosolated (sugar-laden) blood can't flow thru them. That is why
eyes, distant limbs i.e. feet, kidneys, your heart all sustain damage. The
higher the A1c the more damage you are having. That is why diabetes is a silent
killer. You don't know about the cell death till you have a substantial amount
and the pain sets in or the loss of functon. There are so many ways to get
diabetes under control these days! Go get some help!

so Mr. Fever, which part of the world do you live in? Our
pharmacies don't offer any such service and it is now $92 to walk thru the
clinic door before the doctor does anything they can charge you for! Sure would
be good to have pharmacies helping out here!

I don't understand. I would
think that all the sugary drinks would tend to make a person gain weight rather
than lose weight. No joke- I drink on average probably 3 cans of soft drinks a
day plus 3-4 cups of coffee w/sugar a day plus 2 glasses of sweetened tea per
day. I don't know why I do this. I don't know if it's because of thirst, or
sugar craving, or just habit! All I know is I've got a 9.7 A1c.
On Mon Sep 22 14:59:09 2003 () said:
To 12:33 A 9.7 is a three month blood
sugar level of 268 which is very high and can do damage to the eyes, kidneys,
and nervers over a period of time. When you mentioned that you consume lots of
drinks with sugar in them that is a sure sign of diabetes. Along with the weight
loss. The high sugar intake will make you lose weight because they are just
useless carbs. Not a good thing about them I am now down to a 6.6 which makes me
happier then hell. I lost an eye because I didn't take care of myself when I was
younger. I just didn't give a rats ___ about myself or anyone else. I believe
you should make yourself an appointment with a doctor for a fasting blood sugar
reading. That will be the real telling sign. Take Care

One of our local pharmacies
has a "diabeties control center" where they provide services to help diabeties
patients with supplies, blood checks, etc. They have someone on staff that does
this. I have not been diagnosed with diabeties yet (haven't been to Dr. yet) but
the pharmacy gave me an A1c test with a Metrika A1c Now meter and it read 9.7 Is
this high? Is this high enough to produce diabeties symptoms?

maybe a second opinion is in order? last thing I read stated
that any reading over 180 there is systemic cell damage somewhere in the body.
Fortunately we have billions of cells and they only die a few at a time. Some
doctors just give up on long term diabetics ever trying to get below 200 but
that really is a dangerous thing for the patient!

the one Pete

TOM K-
sorry to get back so late - out of state company for the weekend. YES you add
the 1 unit etc. to whatever your baseline is. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR FIRST. The
baseline - how much insulin you take each day - is based on your weight. When on
a long acting in combination with the shorter acting the long acting is usually
50% of the total insulin. The baseline is SUPPOSED to manage your levels but in
cases of brittle diabetes, like Pete's that is entirely uncontrollable - the
sliding scale helps on an hour to hour basis. NOTE - although they have
identified the morning factor in levels, Pete has a terrible time in the spring
and the fall as the seasons change. Yesterday no matter what he did with the
insulin and no matter what he ate he couldn't keep his bloodsugar up. So he
spent the whole day testing every two hours, had to test in the night as well.
Welcome to Autumn!

Arms hurt, and chest will hurt

flies (another 6 sets) then pullovers-got to 50 lbs (ouch) then dips followed by
more cables. Whew! Friday it is legs, second time this week. Let no one say this
stuff doesn't burn calories! It does, big time. Fortunately, I always drink a
shake afterwards, still keeping protein at the level ok'd by my doctor. It takes
careful eating, but it can be done. Best thing is, waist is getting smaller
while bodyweight is about the same, good sign! I haven't posted about workout
regimens in awhile, so I thought I would tonight.

Amy....I was wondering how
you did with your new blood monitor. I am glad to hear you got a new one and are
getting the right readings. I am back at work. I think I went back about a week
too soon. I really felt bad the 1st week, seem to be feeling better now. I have
been taking 60 units of lantus and really watching my diet. When I first got out
of the hospital, I was supplementing with 3-4 humalog shots every day. Since I
started the higher dose of lantus last week, I have not had to take any humalog.
I feel thats a good thing, right? I am worried about weight gain on lantus,
which I can't afford. So far none, but with my diet now, I should be losing and
I am not. I weighed the same when I went back to the dr. as I did when I went
into the hospital. Oh well, I am just glad to not feeling like I had been run
over by a truck. Hope you are feeling better too.

My last A1c was 10.7, didn't

getting straightened out. I have to take another one in Oct. or Nov.

Buckfever..I don't know about
Pharmacy A1c.tests. But you have enough indication to go to Dr..thirst, losing
weight, so..anyone know what a 9.7 means roughly..for sugars over 3-4 months? I
had a 7.5 once, indicating sugars 300+. That destroys things. Kidneys,
neuropathy begins..please go to Dr., Buckfever. And good luck. Sam

Thanks Sam. I just didn't know
how relaible the A1c test would be. I drink a lot of sugary drinks (5 or more
cokes/coffees/teas per day) and never get any excercise. The weight loss started
about 6 months ago at a rate of about 1 lb/week but it seems to have slowed down
over the past month or so. I was, in fact, more physically active during the
time I was losing weight compared to now. I just didn't know if 9.7 would be
high enough to produce the symptoms I've been having-- particularly the weight
loss.

but will now followup with a visit. I have several questions-- does a 9.7 mean
that I am diabetic ( I do have some symptoms of thirst, tingling feet, and
weight loss-- 10% over a 6-month period). Would a A1c reading of just 9.7 be
high enough to give me these symptoms?

My ratio is
1-50..so I need 2 units to lower my sugar 100 points. Depends on body weight,
how sensitive you are to insulin, amount of exercise, etc. This is from my

individuals.

Is the sliding scale the same
for all insulins? Mine is different than what you all are saying and I am on

Just wondering if anyone has
had any experience w/ weight gain on lantus. I went to the Dr. today, after 6
weeks on lantus and really, really watching my diet expecting to have lost a few
pounds and was surprised when I had not. My doctor said " Hopefully you will be
able to maintain your current weight ( which is 40 lbs over) and not gain any
because insulin is not compatible with weight loss, it causes weight gain". I
can't afford this. I had not heard this before, but as I have said earlier, I am
new to all this. Any thoughts?
