has anyone
succeeded in getting on DISABILITY when their diabetes was not controllable and
they couldn't sustain activity longer than 2 hours without a break for rest,
checking & eating, etc.???? So far we have been thru the first turndown.
Everyone is saying you have to appeal twice and be turned down, THEN hire a
lawyer and appeal a third time. ANYONE GOT ANY EXPERIENCE WITH
THIS>>>?

Tom - Pete
uses a sliding scale for his R. Got it from an endocrinologist at UW Madison:
readings 150-249= 1 extra unit; 250-299 = 2 extra units; 300-349 = 3 extra
units; 351-399 = 4 extras units; 400-449 = 5 extras units; 401-450 = 6 extra
units. When he is lower than 80 he makes no changes in insulin but eats more.
Long acting is usually prescribed at 50% of your total insulin per 24 and that
is determined by your weight. NEVER MAKE CHANGES WITHOUT YOUR DOCTOR'S
APPROVAL!!!

Tomk: Good news from you; that is
great!!! BTW, ask the Doc about vitamin B-6 and B-12 (injected or sublingual);
those also will help. Red meat also, but if I remember, your doc won't allow it.

Tomk: I was referred to a study
which suggested 2 grams of vitamin C daily might help. I do not know if you can
handle this much or not. The recommended 500mg daily is not sufficient. I will
check around some more.

Hey TK, nice to see ya! Sorry
it's not under better circumstances, but someone posted a while ago saying you
were no longer with us. Glad to see that isn't true. Amy, I think I read where
you were asking about pain and blood sugar levels? If you were, I can tell you
that my bs levels spike terribly from pain. If you hurt at certain times, you
can make adjustments for it. Well, as for me, I just saw baby Katie's ultrasound
pictures today. She is about 3 lbs and everything is going great. The tech gave
me a disk that lets me e-mail pictures out and I set up one as my background on
the computer. exciting times. CYA later..... Marc

My symptoms where weight loss,
extreme thirst, sick to my stomach voimting and many others. The signs that
where over looked was that I have a very strong family history on both sides of
the family. I had two babies that weighed over nine pounds. I remember being
pregant and having low sugar but didn't realize what was going on. Back then
they didn't check you for diabetis the way they do now. When I finally went to
the doctor they told me I had a bladder infection and was on meds for 2 weeks,
why I didn't die in that two weeks is a miracle.

CuriousJoe; I
experienced weight loss when I was first dx'd with type 1 diabetes. Lost 20 lbs
in a week, sorta shriveled, was starving & drinking, so thirsty. A week
later I was in a coma, Hospital, with a blood sugar of 565, and I couldn't hear.
When they plumped me up with insulin & I.V.'s, after 3 days..they said I did
SO good on insulin, I was sent home with Micronase..which did nothing. Back in
the Hospital, for another 3,learned how to use insulin. That was 11 years ago.
I'm 61. On the insulin pump now.

Amy-- you said "all the
signs were there but nobody noticed". What are the signs? Did you experience
weight loss as a symptom or know anyone who has?

Amy My work isn't physical. I
work in a call center that does customer service for people calling in with
questions. I am a supervisor, so I take care of the agents that take care of the
customers. I don't have to be on the phones anymore. I think everyone was
surprised that I wasn't a picture of health when I went back today. They would
say "you look so tired" I am. I think thats the biggest thing, "tired" I was in
my 30's and had some other problems and the dr. said to me "how long have you
been diebetic?" I said "I'm not" and he said "yes you are" That was my start. My
co-workers have been great and have helped educate me. Thanks for replying to me
and take care.

cheryllou, I've been doing insulin
for about 18 years. I went along time before I was dx. All the signs where there
but nobody noticed. I had blood work done and cann't take pills so I had to go
straight to insulin. I work a hard job, so one thing I do is carry glucose
tablets with me. I carry them in my pocket, purse, coat, car, you name it, they
are everywhere just in case I get in trouble and need them. Also make sure you
tell your co-workers that your on insulin. If I go to the rest room and my
co-workers think I'm gone to long they come and check on me. I'm sure you will
do just fine. Keep the faith.

Amy Great I am glad that
worked out for you. How long have you been dibetic? I just went on insulin, and
have been off work for 2 weeks. I return tomorrow. I feel like I am leaving my
controlled enviornment and returning to "the real world" I am freightened. I
have still not had normal morning readings on 45 units lantus and 3-4 shots of
humalog per day. I am not having the 3-400 ones I had prior to starting though.
I am staying between 190-230.I have to work to maintain my insurance and my
husband can not work, so my only option is to get back in the saddle. Maybe if I
had tried controlling things at the begining (16 years ago), I might not have
come to this. Wish me luck.

Hi everyone! I just called life scan
and asked them to send me a one touch ultra and they said it would be here in a
couple of days. I hope that this will be a step in getting my A1C down some.
Started riding my bike again to. It's a start. After doing this for so many
years, you kind of lose touch with the program. That's why it's important to go
to classes and get refresher lessons. I get so used to taking my shots and keep
moving with my life and lose sight of everything else. Hope things start looking
up!!

Amy I had the older accu-check
and the company replaced it with the newer one that uses comfort curve strips.
Be sure to check on line or the meter and try to get an 800 phone # for the type
you have. They were really helpful and replaced it free when the test kit proved
it was giving wrong readings. I have been wanting to check out the one touch
ultra. Thats the one they have been advertising on TV, that it's not as invasive
and doesn't hurt as much. Although since I started the insulin shots, the lancet
seems minor. Good luck!

I have been thinking that it might
be my meter. I have a one touch profile. I called a Diabetes group and they said
they do run lower readings. They reconmend the one touch ultra, freestyle and
the accucheck comfort curve. They said that they are the top three best in that
order. I guess they have something new in them that makes them more accurate.
Guess I have to check around and get a new one. What does everyone else use?
