Thanks guys! we had discussed "hosing him down" - good idea to keep the clothing damp and fortunately there is always a breeze here so that works too. As for curing Type I Diabetes - the pancreas is damaged and non-functional. I agree with Squats that seasilver might be a good supplement but it won't replace a vital organ. I will, however, look it up!

To grannypj One of the most important functions of sweating is to cool the body when extra cooling is necessary. When a person can no longer sweat for body cooling, my suggestion is to go to an artificial sweating by lightly clothing the body and then keeping those clothes damp with water. Additional air movement across the clothes will increase evaporation of the water thus cooling his body and requiring more water. Keep close track of his body temp. so that it is not lowered too much. This is in addition to the liquid intake and output monitoring. Just a suggestion when it gets hot. Gordo

Grannypj: If the humidity is low, perspiration evaporates. Ii is good that he carries water with him. A comment about SeaSilver: The claims made in the ads are questionable. I am sure it is a good multivitamin, but diabetes remains incurable.

Sqats - THANX. That is what he is doing, carrying water with him and keeping the fluid intake up. Some days tests every two hours and adjusts activities or food. The doctors don't have any answers. He is sweating now and then but not daily and not on hot days.

GrannyPJ, please do not let him get drunk like you were told to. It will be too hard on him toting around his weight, the wine jug and his diseases in the hot sun.

Grannypj: I find I sweat better when blood sugar is where it should be. Also, if Pete is working outside...water, water, and more water should be drunk. I do not know what else can be done.

HELLO SQUATS - back for some help....sometimes this place gets too crazy for me.....you probably remember Pete...Type I, now 27, 16 years down and 2003 hit the side effects. Here it is Summet and hot. He quit sweating two days ago. We know this is an autonomic breakdown and can't do a thing about it. So the QUESTION IS - how does he compensate??? Even the Harrisons' (current textbook for med schools on Internal Medicine - all our doctors have it on their shelves too!) doesn't say what to do to keep the patient alive thru this. We are thinking...check urine output against water intake; maybe monitor body temp and shoot for avoiding hyperthermia. IDEAS?? EXPERIENCE???
