MARIA! Do not stop taking insulin if bs is 100-180! You may need food to keep everything in balance, but that range is too high not to take medication! BTW, what does the doc say?

z: There is a product called "Carb-Force" which might help! Drink enough to equal 15 gm carb; that should get glucose up without sending it through the roof! also, if you try glutamine with it, that will help also!

I'm on insulin and it happens almost everyday. I hit a low and the bs won't come up. But when it does finally it will hit any where from 250 to 300 Then it takes forever to go down again.

Z: Do you experience this when active over a long period of time? Also, are you on insulin or oral meds? I have found that small quantities of juice over a period of time will keep bs raised when experiencing stubborn lows.

Kathy: Interesting post! Since low blood sugar interferes with normal operation of the body, numbness is no surprise! I am sure not everybody gets this symptom, but your knowing this will help your control!

Over the years (37)it has become increasingly difficult to impossible to detect my blood sugars dropping. Recently, my blood sugars dropped to 20 while I was sleeping and I never woke up. Is there a device that will set off an alarm when blood sugars begin to drop? I know about the GlucoWatch, but it is too expensive. Does anyone know of a similar divice which is cheaper?

I've been having problems with low sugar attacks and the blood sugar level takes forever to come up. I keep checking it and it doesn't rise so I eat more, and it takes forever. Then when it comes up look out, because it's high and I feel so full and can't eat again for along time. It's just misable. Anyone else have this problem I've been diabetic for 20 years.

Recently, I have been experiencing numbness in my hands. At first, I thought it was just sleeping on them during the night and cutting off circulation. Then, as it continued I got worried it could have something to do with my diabetes and circulation. However, they were not numb upon rising . . .usually 30-45 minutes afterwards, and they alternated between right and left hand, and it was never consisted, i.e., every day. Then, I started tracking and diarying when this occurred. Sometimes it happened in the morning; sometimes in the afternoon ~ never any consistency EXCEPT . . . I started noticing that whenever my blood sugar dropped, my hand or hands got numb! I had never heard of this symptom for hypoglycemia before! Sometimes low blood sugars produce this result; other times not. But since I have been tracking it, it does seem to be a precurser to a low blood sugar about 80% of the time. In fact, IF I do feel the numbness, I can almost bet a low blood sugar is coming on. This is different than the "tingling" feeling I sometimes get with a drop in blood sugars, and is something quite new over the past 37 years of having Type I diabetes. Basically, I am asking if this is a documented symptom or something rare/unique? Have other diabetics reported such a symptom, like when your hands "fall asleep" after sleeping or sitting on them? It's really strange that it is happening all of a sudden during the past year or so. Thanks for any help/information you can pass on to me. Kathy Ramirez

I wish I could help my fellow Texan. But, I have never dealt with any of what he is asking about. I go to military doctors and have never needed to apply for disability.

Phil: Dr. Bernstein's diet is controversial. Generally speaking, protein should not be treated as a "free food." However, diabetics often are prescribed too little protein to support their activities, even if kidney function is ok. Have your dietitian work up a "basal metabolism rate" for you, than add calories to cover activities. That will give you the ideal number of calories you need. Remember that RDA recommendation of .8 gm/kg bodyweight is too low for many people. With kidney problems, it is different. Then, protein MUST be kept low, even too low! Personally, I would avoid the Bernstein diet, unless you just follow it a week or two, then return to your normal diet. Get cardio-vascular exercise early in the day. That should help.

p. eager: A body composition test is always helpful to determine how much bodyfat needs to be dropped. Failure to do this sometimes damages people's health. There are no panaceas for getting rid of too much bodyfat. There are principles, like lifestyle changes, increased exercise, both cardio-vascular and with weights. Sports like football, baseball, tennis, hockey, etc. can help a lot. Dietary changes such as dropping white flour, margarine, eating more veggies, lean meats and cheeses, food based vitamins, etc. can go a long way to dropping bodyfat. One major key to this is speeding up the metabolism. Too much bodyfat can act like a brake on the system. I hope this helps.

Ken, check with Texas and see if insulin-dependent diabetes is considered a disability! Here in California, it is! Whatever it takes, you need medical help.
