John V. About "bodybuilding"
tips, weight training can improve blood sugar control, reduce bodyfat, increase
strength and endurance. No one is saying here that you HAVE to do it. It is just
one of many things a person with Diabetes can do to fight this disease. The
benefits of lifting are irrefutable. As far as leaving because of silly posts,
some have. But people with serious questions deserve honest answers. Some of us
may disagree, but that disagreement can be beneficial; you learn!

Protein in urine can be a sign
of weakening kidney disfunction. It is usually measured by collecting all urine
in a 24 hour period, along with a blood test. Ace inhibitors and blood pressure
medications can either slow the increase in protein spillage or even reverse it,
in some cases.

Protein in your urine is very
very bad I have heard. You should go get checked in at the nearest ER. I would
call an ambulance right away. Should be ok with proper emergency treatment I
would guess though.

What does it mean when you have
protein in your urine? Does that mean your kidney's are going bad?

Dr. Atkins died of a head injury
sustained in a fall, not kidney failure! His diet does work, but, as was posted
earlier, diabetics should be real careful about this approach to fat loss.
Kidney stress can be serious.

Dr Atkins dead. Could have been the
high protien in his famous diet that caused his kidneys to shut down after a
simple fall. Diabetics should really be careful of this.

It goes without saying that
before you start intense workouts, see your doctor, and if you get an "ok",
start light and work up. Do major movements like bench presses, rows, and
squats. Save the shaping exercises until you gain some lean mass. Your CDE will
have to do some work once you have started. Std. RDA's won't work, unless you
want to injure yourself! Schwarzenegger's "Encyclopedia of Bodybuilding" is a
good resource if you are just beginning. You might consider a personal trainer
to help get you going. Someone with a degree in kinesiology for special
populations will be helpful.

I thought this was a diabetes
site! Guess not; sooooo, will focus on the benefits of weight training, muscle
weight gain, and eating to grow!!!! I shall start here. A recent article on
vitamin C suggested 500-1500 gm C twice a day as optimal for athletes. I must
add though, bear in mind that Diabetics have a greater need for it, since all
too often, their immune systems are depleted by bad diet. Since the vitamin is
water soluble, twice per day will work. Don't forget 50-100 mg vitamin B complex
vites. They help with vitamin C absorption. Personally, I use a good multivite,
Vit C, and B Complex. It works! The needs of training play a big role here. I
have long taken issue with the know-nothings who counsel diabetics on
"exercise", if you call it that! Read something from an RD who said that most
RD's deal with sick people. I agree! That lady who tells you to eat wrong thinks
"poor you, YOU haaaave Diabetes! tsk! tsk! I will help you put on lots of fat
and then express concern that you are obese. Then I will have you do what will
make the problem worse." Oy! Enough is enough! I have diabetes. but I am not
bedridden. I am not sick, I do not have arthritis, etc. I can see. Maybe I will
go back to the Diabetes Support Group near me in May to go on the attack. Quack
Quack!!! Heh heh. Disclaimer: This is not posted to discourage any whose
Diabetes hinders their lives seriously, who have any one of a number of severe
complications. I know of a number here with such problems. I am speaking from
the perspective of someone who isn't in those situations. Many people with
diabetes are, for whatever reasons, able to do what they need to do. To them, I
will maintain my apologetic for hard, intense, strenuous, hardcore lifting! Hey,
if politics is ok, so is what I just posted. For the record, the last 6 posts
were irrelevant to diabetes. Mine was!

Too much insulin while drinking
a six-pack of beer? Loss of conscieousness and possible seizures. I cannot
imagine a diabetic being that irresponsible.

Amount of Insulin: I agree with
you about what indicates good control. I mentioned metabolism as one reason why
I get by with less than some other people. THAT DOESN'T MEAN MY CONTROL IS
BETTER! Had Japanese food for dinner so glucose is running higher even though I
lifted. Getting an early start tomorrow, so I will be running lower. Thanks for
the added info.
