I've been a Type I diabetic for 34 years. No complications, yet. I'm very thankful. Lately, I've been so tired, no energy. The doctor has run all the normal tests and all is OK. Well, it's not. Those A1c's are just an extimate of what sugars have been running over a period of time. That isn't accurate. If I'm having a low of 32 and it rebounds over 400 and I quickly get it back down to 95 or so, it's going to look good in the overall picture. But my body know better. My body feels like mush. Non-diabetics don't realize what an insulin reaction does to a person. When I have one, my whole day is shot because of the rebound. Some of my problems is hormonal, I believe. I watch very closely, check at least 5 times per day. I know how to adjust but stress plays a big part. I want to work but it's getting hard to get through a day. When I come home I literally collapse. It totally drains me. I've been thinking about asking my doctor for a couple of weeks off to regroup, but I've never been one to let this disease control my life. I'm getting to the point where I feel like it is no matter how hard I try. I just wanted to talk to someelse who knows what I'm talking about.

Is anyone here also on chemo and how has it affected your diabetes....what supplements ?? Docs warned me away from any powter or China herb stuff as it can screw up the chemo effects ? Any comments...I also have a organ transplant and take immunosupressents which they feel allowed the cancer to get a hold of me......so...keep those immuno systems built up !

Rose ,no matter what you're told on here, if you take any medications at all see your doctor before taking any other over the counter supplements or pills. Also be careful following advice that suggests kidney killing protein powders. You will end up on dialisys......

Rose: About L-glutamine, I too have read that it produces high glucose. I have not found that to be the case. What it does do is slow breakdown of lean bodytissue for energy. Obviously, it is best used as part of an exercise program.

I have a question regarding the use of L-Glutamine for someone with high glucose. I have read that L-Glutamine helps balance blood sugar but it also produces high glucose. My glucose is boarderline high - 105 and my doctor plans to test me for Type 11 Diabetes. Will L-Glutamine help someone with high glucose - or create more of a problem? Thank you in advance for your feedback, Rose

Hey, squats, I'm here! Was on Spring Break w/the seminary last week. I'm now going to the gym almost every day now. I went this morning before work. Will see how that goes, have to leave home at 5 AM to get there, work out and shower and change and get to work by 8 AM. Even went yesterday afternoon. I'm really feeling great and am seeing the inches going away. BG's #'s are doing pretty good. Hope to see my next A1c down in the next 2-3 months.

Billybob: You are right, I did not mention failure to exercise! It isn't, however, quite that simple! Too many carbs slow down the metabolism, thus encourage fat gain! Especially when exercise is lacking. In the years I have posted here, I have encouraged people to do what they can in the workout arena. What's with this "diet of death" thing? Where's my wheatgrass juice? I'm getting a headache.

Squats, I, for one, am sick and tired of your Constitution waving, Doctor bashing, and food pyramid crapola! The kids get fat from no exercise. We've seen what your diet of death is all about!! Enough already!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Malnourished kids? The FDA says "carb-load em" and they get fat! Up through adolescence, lots of meat, fish. eggs, and poultry are essential for building strong adults! The "fat pyramid" is a major problem. For health's sake, ignore it!!!!!

Down to one cup, maybe 1.5 cups coffee/day. Iced tea, soda are out too. Drinking green tea, rosemary tea, and dandelion tea. Anyone else here doing this?

To the nameless detractor below. I agree the RDA is a baseline. So why not tell Diabetics they need more B vitamins, more antioxidants, more vitamin C, etc? You actually agreed with me by using the word "baseline." As for the Gov't recommendations, the Constitution does not authorize it. The following is NOT a recommendation of any product: When a meal replacement must be used, consider the following: Check the gms of sugar per serving Total carbs include sugar, fiber, and complex carbs. Look for minimal sugars. If protein is high, say 40 gms, 1/2 serving may work. Protein free sources fresh fruit can raise carbs to safe levels. Find out if the fat is treated with heat. If so, it may be a health risk. There are Meal Replacement Powders out now that use flaxseed powder, good choice. Maltodextrin is a cheap source of complex carbs, I haven't found a drink that does not have it! A couple of the powders do not use it. Protein that is solely casein or soy is cheap. A variety of protein sources will work better. This is especially true with diabetic diets so low in protein. Let's say a 1/2 serving of a Meal Replacement Powder has 20 grams of protein. Sound high? Remember most breads have 2-4gm incomplete protein/slice. So that 20 gms protein actully is equal to 2 oz meat and two/three starches! But it is better protein. 'Nuff for mow!

TO SAM: When I was in high school in Kansas City there was a section of road at one end of the Fairfax Bridge where there was nothing but gas stations on both sides of the road for a mile. They had a perpetual gas war there. You could drive over there and fill up for 9 cents a gallon at any time. BUT, NOW LISTEN TO MY BUT, we worked for 35 cents an hour. Gasoline at $2.00 a gallon represents a multiplier of almost 22+ times. A multiplier of 5 times 35 cents produces a wage of right at 8.00 an hour. How many people are trying to support a family on 8.00 a gallon today. Bear in mind these were gas war prices. The normal price of 18-20 cents a gallon would produce a multiplier of 10 times. This extends to only 3.50 an hour. Still want to talk bout gouging on gas prices? I'm just tired of all the whining.

Myself, right on. I couldn't agree more.I have yet to see one anti war protester come up with a solution. It's all no war, peace, no war. But how? No answer from them, it's a trend to protest. We should all take up arms to protect the very country that gives you the liberty of freedom. Don't forget protesters, protesting is part of that very freedom you so ungraciously enjoy. Personally, I am much less concerned about a lack of supplies then I am watching a million or so fellow Americans die from an attack of a WMD because we sat on our asses as this dictator, who kills people who disagree with him, finds a way to filter those weapons to people who can get them into our country. I am sure DERC will delete this, but hey, I love my country and will defend, if only by words, to the fullest extent. Long live America and the freedom it provides!

WELL SQUATS, THE U.S. CAME UP WITH THE RDA STANDARDS AS A BASELINE DUE TO SO MANY MALNOURISHED PEOPLE, ESPECIALLY CHILDREN, IN THE COUNTRY. "AUTHORITY"??? WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?? IF THE GOVERNMENT RECOMMENDS THAT YOU TAKE A SHOWER EVERY DAY, DO YOU GET ALL SNIPPY ABOUT THAT? SOMEONE HAD TO COME UP WITH SOMETHING ON RDA. I HARDLY THINK THAT THEY RECOMMENDED SOMETHING TO INFRINGE UPON YOUR RIGHTS. IF YOU DON'T LOVE YOUR COUNTRY WHY DON'T YOU GET THE HELL OUT AND GO LIVE IN IRAQ OR CUBA? THEN YOU'LL SEE HOW GOOD WE HAVE IT HERE!!! AND ANOTHER THING, ALL YOU ANTI-WAR PEOPLE SHOULD FOLLOW SQUATS WHEN HE LEAVES FOR HIS HOMELAND BECAUSE YOU ARE TRAITERS TOO FOR NOT SUPPORTING YOUR PRESIDENT...........
