Got off the phone not too long ago with a company that makes a very good meal replacement. Requested that tests be run on both type 1 and type 2 Diabetics to monitor effect on blood sugar. The carbs in it are whole wheat and oatmeal. Fat is from ground flaxseed. Superior to the cheap fructose and maltodextrin blend in an MRP that touts itself as good for Diabetics. Will wait to hear back from them.

Marc - Yes, changing out the pump at 2AM is not a very good idea, but when Ralph, (the pump), beeps you awake, telling you it is not delivering, because it is empty, you get up and change it. My BIG mistake was not checking it an hour or so after changing, or at least checking my BG when I got up at 5AM.

Believe me, I've learned my lesson. The canula bending like that was the first time that had happened to me in the 8 years I have been on the pump. I guess that just goes to show you, there is always the first time!

I was really on a yo-yo yesterday. I had those highs, and then before supper I was down to 70, before bed 232, and then this morning 40 something.

Kerry, we all, as diabetics, have been where you are. I've had this 'lovely' disease for 34 years, and will have periods of depression and feeling somehow tainted, occur every once in awhile. Would be glad to talk to you anytime you need too. You can even email me if you would like.

My earlier sarcastic post was taken too seriously. Iceberg lettuce, 3 oz meat/day, and 1/2 cup milk per day IS a "diet of death." For new people here, I sometimes get rather sarcastic. I will try to keep it under better control. For the record, dark green and yellow veggies ARE good. whole grains are good (sprouted even better!), Essential fatty acids are good. Moderate protein is good, too much is not. Etc. Etc. Since I am on the subject, following are some substitutions I usually make: Brown rice instead of white rice, no white bread, just whole grains. Go with fish or fowl instead of red meat. Yams or yukon potatoes instead of white potatoes. Olive oil instead of margarine, grapeseed extract mayonnaise instead of standard stuff. Cold-pressed safflower oil is a good choice also. Heat causes molecular changes that can make a good fat dangerous. Lunch meats, with high levels of sodium, are best avoided. In some areas, uncured lunch meats are available, somewhat better! Dare I say spinach pasta is a good choice? Unless, of course, the CDE says "no" because of a complication. Lots of water, too.

Marc, I'm doing fine now. I just got back here, (office), 30 Mins. ago. I went to the hospital. They got me down, and all the labs checked out fine.

The problem was the canula was bent. I do carry extra sets, and I changed it right away. Still didn't see the numbers coming down to fast, so went to the hospital. The ER got me back under control.

Thanks for asking! I did bring this on myself, I didn't check my BG an hour after changing the site this morning. I changed the site at about 2AM. Then to make matters worse, I didn't check when I woke up. So from 2AM till 8AM everything shot up.

You can bet I will not be so lax in the future. The last time this pump acted up, I wound up in ICU for 4 days, and even had to go through a heart cath. Of course everything was fine.

Marc, I agree. From my perspective, I would think Type 1's have it tougher. Injections or pumping every day. Phew! My couple of pills is a picnic compared to that. We all have to watch what we eat, count carbs, exercise, visit the doctor, etc. In the end the disease slowly takes away parts of us bit by bit. Type 1s and Type 2s are not enemies; they are co-combatants against a common disease. Diabetes is just insideous in that it attacks Type 1s one way and Type 2s another. In the end we all suffer the effects the same. Just my opinion.

My last post was - On Tue Jan 28 12:33:45 2003 TFaith - for the information of any new people reading this site.

Pumpers, had a problem with syringe in my pump this morning. I changed this morning and apperantly was not getting any insulin while driving in to work, a 1 hr 15 min drive. Just as I was getting into town, is when I heard my pump beeping. When I got into the office and checked out the pump, I tried to push insulin by hand and nothing happened. I disconnected the tubing and then was able to force out the insulin.

The first two times I tested BG after that, the meter only read HI, the last check a few minutes ago said 583. A friend has gone to buy me some strips to test for ketones, and I've got myself on a sliding scale.

If the strips read hi on ketones, I will go to the hospital. Do not want to go into DKA.

All this to say check your syringes and push the plunger through a few times to keep this from happening to you.

On Tue Jan 28 15:00:56 2003 REPENT FOR JESUS () said:
WILLFUL SIN BRINGS DEMONIC ATTACKS. The majority of Christians today are totally ignorant of the nature of evil spirits (demons), and many would prefer that they were not even mentioned. They choose to ignore this portion of God's ministry because they are fearful of things beyond their understanding. The result of this ignorance is that multitudes live in needless torment. One of the deadliest misrepresentations of the truth of God is that a Christian should not be concerned with thoughts that a demon could be their problem. This is taught within many churches and gives the devil a "field day" to bring fear, mental torment, jealousy, hatred, lust, pride, self-pity, addiction, gluttony and many other forms of bondage, oppression, and defilement. When we practice willful sin, Satan eventually sends one of his demons that is compatible with that particular sin to dwell within us. Then each time we give way to that sin that spirit takes over. Since their personalities mesh with those of their victims, it takes spiritual discernment to detect them. We must remember that demon spirits are "invisible beings" with wicked intelligence that seek bodies in which they can express themselves. These spirits are emissaries sent from Satan having personalities and characteristics that make up an intelligent being. They walk, hear, speak, see, obey, seek, think, know and dwell in the body to accomplish their evil purposes (Matthew 12:43-45, Mark 1:23-24,3:11). They are made subject to Christ and believers by the atonement, the name of Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. Each principal demon or "strongman" has a particular mission which we are able to recognize by its fruit or manifestation. We need to seek God and study His Word to find the truth about this controversial subject. CAN A CHRISTIAN HAVE A DEMON? One of Satan's clever devices is to cause division among Christians over just such a subject, for then he is allowed to work freely on both sides. One side refuses to believe that a Christian can have a demon, while the other side sees demons in everything. Both sides are extreme, but if we look to God's Word we can find balance. To answer the question, "Can a Christian have a demon?," we need to understand the two main causes of a Christian's problems. The first problem is what Paul calls the "flesh" in Romans 8:5-8, "For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God."

To 13:30:30 -- I apologize for my lack of clarity; thank you for pointing it out. What I mean is: my doctor and I have agreed that I should work toward the goal of managing my Type 2 diabetes using exercise and diet alone. To that end WE (together) are making decisions on when and how to reduce my daily oral medications. WE have taken the first step by reducing my Amaryl from 4 mg. to 2 mg. a day. My test this month showed a slight increase in A1c, so I know I need to manage my diet better and (ugh!) increase my exercise. That's also why I asked about testing more - so I can be better aware of what my numbers are throughout the day. This was not intended as medical advice for anyone. It was a statement of what I am doing in consultation with my doctor. I was hoping to say that without all the verbiage. I suppose *SIGH* that's not possible.

It's true that Type 2's have 'some' different problems to face than Type 1's. Especially if they have gone un'DX for a long time. But, the bottom line for 'both' is control = testing often, diet, (a lot of Type 1's face weight gain), and exercise. Each type is complex in it's own ways. To say that 1 type is more complex over the other, is maybe an overstatement. Each type's control is based on the same things as mentioned above.

Steve: As another type 2 that is not on meds after 5 + years, I sincerely recommend that you learn more about foods and exercise for a better life and less fluctuations with your glucose readings. My readings are directly related to many different factors. If you understand the properties of the various foods that you eat including all that you drink, your stress level, stimulants of all kinds and how much of the kind of exercise that you can and will do on a regular basis, you can stabilize your fasting BG readings and your A1C numbers. My problem is that I don't like to walk in cold weather. Walking is one of the few exercises that I enjoy and that my hips will tolerate. As you have probably noticed already, Type 1's have a different set of rules than do type 2's. However, detailed knowledge of both nutrition and exercise is essential for both types. Type 1's HAVE TO do many things that we type 2's don't have to. We type 2's, however have to do many things that type 1's don't have to. Most type 1's do not have a weight problem, at least early in their diabetic life. Most type 2's that I have talked to have a weight problem before diagnosis. We develop a condition, due to our past bad habits of poor nutrition and exercise, of decreased insulin effectiveness. I don't know whether this occurs with type 1's. Living with type 2 is very complex. This means that the better you understand the basics of your body, the easier it is to live comfortably with this thing called type 2 diabetes. Knowledge and understanding of your body, your nutrition and your exercise plus any medications you take for type 2 or other conditions of your health are of prime importance. When you understand the problem, your job of controlling it is much easier. Im am sorry this is so lengthy but it is complex. Gordo

Thanks for the advice, Marc. I know what I need to do, so like with exercise, I need to "just do it." Here's hoping for better numbers on the next test in April.

Steve... you said it! More testing could only help, and after you nail your numbers down, just back it off a little. That's what I told myself when I started testing 15 times a day. I am about 10 a day now. But that's a product of paranoia about my eyes. 4-6 times a day is good to nail down a better number and 4 a day to make sure you are there. Just remember a 6.6 is not bad control, you can improve but I wouldn't shoot for anything under a 5.8 or so. I know that differs around here, but that is a number most doctors and diabetics I have talked to shoot for, and most don't get. Good luck and take it easy......Marc

Sorry -- first sentence should be "It was misleading at all" referring to your previous post, Faith. D'oh!!

Faith - I wasn't misleading at all. I was just confused with my doctor saying test maybe 3, maybe 4 at the most days a week and then 2 or 3 times that day. Well, I did that when my A1c dropped to 6.4 (sorry, it never made it to 6.1 like I thought). Then 3 months later it's up to 6.6. I'm just thinking that I need to be doing a lot more testing. I suppose I should just do what I think is right on this -- I mean, more testing can only help. That's why I asked him about the Glucowatch but he doesn't think I need that level of frequent testing. Oh well, gotta buy more test strips and lancets. At least the lancets are relatively cheap.

Steve, I think my last post to you was probably misleading. I mentioned that my husbands doctor told him he didn't need to check often, every day, just a few times a week. That was true, BUT only because his A1C was so good. It was in the 5. range.

Any one who is having high A1C readings SHOULD test often. That is the only way to get a good control.

Didn't mean to discourage others from testing often, that is the only way for us to get and maintain good control.

As it is, my husband still checks any where from 3-5 times a day. He's better at testing than I am!

Jim, thanks for the link to the HbA1c site!

FROM DHD>>>>>>>>You are so right about the crazy board. This board is not keeping out those of there, because they are reporting all that is being said on here. The first thing here would have to be control of membership so that only those come on here to talk about diabetes and help each other. You can be sure that this is also reported, in a slanted way of course. However..... John.

Faith, I take oral meds plus diet and exercise (but not enough) to control. Over the past years I've been able to decrease dosages on most meds and I am hoping to get to the point where I can maintain control using diet and exercise alone. My doctor first said testing a "few times" each week was ok, too, but I am not certain that's going to help me achieve the goal. That's why I asked about the Glucowatch -- but doctor said I didn't need it, so he won't write a prescription for it. I am looking at the new meter where you can test on your arm. Just wondering if there was a consensus about testing. My feeling is that a few times a week is too little, especially since my A1c was up on this last test.

Steve: I test 5-8x daily on the average. I find it expecially important to test after meals (1-2 hrs) to see how my control is. The increase after meals has an effect on AIC too.
