Jim... 4.9? Wow, wouldn't that equal about an 85 average? I haven't looked at the chart in a while, but that sounds like it was dangerously low. Congratulations on the quiting smoking. The hardest thing to do and the best thing you could have ever done. I quit a 4 pack a day years ago, but then saw first hand what lung cancer can do. You did a good thing there for your family, and you of course. This disease is so funny, you call 150's "control problems" and I know so many people who would love the 150's. But then again I live in a type 1 world where everyone I know has been on insulin for 10-20 years. I think about 1/4 of my family is diabetic. I don't know how you feel about working out, but I started using a heavy bag again, my numbers are better and I lost some weight. It's a great workout if you have the body for it, and what I mean is your body has to adsorb a lot of pounding. Shoulders take a beating, but for me personally it's worth it, and it is great for anger management, not that I am saying anything there! I only speak for my own experiences..... Take it easy..

I heard a lecture by an endo who said that abdominal fat increases insulin resistance. Also, nicotine is a stimulant. In its absence, metabolism slows down. That may play a role in control difficulties Jim. Ask the doc to authorize a hydrostatic bodyfat test. That will be an indication as well. Check with the CDE about recing carbs and fat, maintaining protein intake at present levels with, if he/she oks it, a slight increase. Beginning an aerobic exercise program may help as well. If anything, it could slow the transition to insulin. Keep us updated! Take care, and I hope this helps. I wouldn't wish anybody to be on insulin.

All the sudden, and with no real change that I can think of, avg is in the 150's and still going higher, on 2 types of oral meds with the doctor saying insulin may not be far off. I finally quit smoking Nov 3 (after 27 years), and gained 19 pounds, but neither the doctor nor I believe this is the reason for my control problems. I'm not what anyone would consider really overweight. Waist size 36. Go figure. Jim

Steve... you know when you go on a diet and you lose weight quickly but you just can't get that last 10 pounds no matter how hard you try, well that's like those couple of tenths could be! It's funny how doctors differ, because a 6 is a really good goal, when I hit 5.6 my doc lectured me about being too tight and to adjust for less insulin, I was getting too low. I think Jim said his was in the low 5's also, but I guess it comes down to this, can you feel a low? Those that can't, a 6 is a good number. Good luck on the test and I am going to check the website to see that picture. 15 tests a day and my fingers are trash!!!!Take it easy.... Marc

Marc - the picture on the website looks slightly larger than a normal wristwatch. It's rectangular - I guess so it's easier to read. I am considering it because I finally got my A1c down to 6.1. I don't like regular testing, but I do it. I'd just like to do better & more frequent monitoring. My physician wants my A1c below 6. It's taken a long time to reach this level, how hard could another couple of tenths of a point be? I'll find out tomorrow afternoon.

Hey Steve, did that watch ever come out in a smaller version? The one I have seen ( Panic Room) looks too big. I am sure in no time they will have that looking like a regular watch, I was just wondering if it's out yet. On blood testing, ****this is for pump users*** the inplant tester should be out soon. Minimed has an inplant that will test the bs and talk to the pump via infared to tell it what the number was, then the pump is supposed to do the adjustments. I guess that's as close to an artificial pancreas as we are going to get for now. From the guy I know in the development department of Minimed it should be out sometime next year. Another reason for anyone on the fence about if the pump is right for you to consider it again. Thanks for some good posts and hopefully we can see more of the regulars start posting again..... I'm going to take the mulligan offer and start over from square 1, too. So here's my contribution - Squats: I believe you are referring to the new Glucowatch. I found this website for it: http://www.glucowatch.com/us/default.html (end of URL) The site states that you cannot buy it in a store; you must get a prescription from your physician and then order it via a toll-free number. According to the website it can perform tests as often as every 10 minutes for up to 13 hours; alarms for high, low or "likely to be low within 20 mins.", plus stores up to 8,500 readings. I plan to ask my doctor about it when I meet with him tomorrow (time to hear the results of latest A1c test - gulp!). I couldn't find a price, but I understand the discs the watch uses are rather expensive. I don't think it replaces invasive testing completely, but it could be helpful to provide more intensive monitoring. That might be more useful for Type 1s (I am Type 2), but some extra monitoring, especially during the day for me, couldn't hurt!

Even after Faye's death, 1 & 1/2 years now, some of us still miss her. And some still never get over the fact..that their words would not hold a candle to hers. And that they have nothing of importance to say.

To "Date sugar" Thanks! Something to think about. I have used stevia on occasion, but have yet to find a powder that is not bitter. To the person who asked about "fruit exchange", at one time, a distinction was made between starches and fruits. So, a 10gm carb portion of fruit was called a "fruit exchange." Now fruits are treated as carbs in 15 gm carb portions. This can be of great help to carb counters, and help people on low protein diets get their proteins from better sources, since most fruits are virtually protein free.

Fructose would be the sugar in the dates but date sugar is actually the whole date (less the pit) ground. You can buy Date Cystals and Date "Sugar". The date crystal were developed before all households had refrigerators and they don't need refrigeration. They can be stored year round and have many uses. They soften quickly with moisture and are GREAT on oatmeal or any hot cereal that improves with a bit of sweetness. The date sugar is just the crystals ground to a powder which is finer than a demerrara (sp) sugar but not as fine as regular brown store bought sugar. I buy mine at SHIELDS DATE GARDEN 80225 Hwy. 111, Indio CALIFORNIA. Their website is www.shieldsdates.com I use the 4 teaspoons of date sugar per day that I use in my coffee as a FRUIT EXCHANGE. You can take 1 TBSP of date sugar and mix it with a very small amount of fruit juice (orange grapefruit or even water) or milk (yes goat works) till it is the consistency of soft butter, put it in the fridge overnight and put it on something toasted in the morning. DELICIOUS. Still only 1 FRUIT but NO PRESERVATIVES and NO NOTHING that could have side effects.

Hey Jim, I just deleted a very long post because it read kinda sappy and I KNOW that would paint me a target. Here is my thought, and it goes also to answering the post at 14:25. I think if some of us watched our tempers, some of us didn't mention religion in their posts, and all of us didn't react to what was posted to start a fight, maybe we can get this back to 1/2 of what is was. I mean that is something, and much better than nothing. The posts that aren't ours but they use our names, I think most of us know each other enough to tell the difference. And if the posts sound bad, then we should give the benefit of the doubt to the person whose name was used. I don't think there is a "super glue" way to fix this, just a peice by peice rebuilding. I mean I can't imagine who would trust anyone here at the moment, but through all that there is a tremendous need for diabetic help. Maybe that's good enough, the goal of getting back where we were is lofty, but if people can get help, advise, comfort then weeding through the rest might be worth it. I really don't know. Personally most of the garbage posted here I just don't get. Who really cares who said what at a DIFFERENT site. I know I don't.Either way, my recent personal experience with the cult thing has me thinking we spend too much time hating and blaming and much less time understanding and helping. Instead of writing it off, I would rather try to help, even if it is only 1/2 of what it was. It this sounds way sappy, just remember I watched a family get ripped apart recently and that image is very fresh in my mind........ MarcW

We have people posting like others, as others, and attacking others. Nobody knows who is who anymore. No one will post like the old days because they become too easy of a target from AP's. Someone obviously feels that they have been done wrong or abused on here and will never let it go. Then there's the DHD hatred. Why? Because the people there used to be on BWD? What a stupid reason to be so hateful. I've only been part of this board for 2-3 years and even though I almost never post, I still get kicked around without provocation, as do you, Faith, Herb etc. Look at what they posted about Herb the other day. It nearly made me sick. Picking and "sparring" with people is one thing. We've ALL done it, but that was terrible. Again, maybe I have been a little too opinionated every now and then, but these problems were around long before I found the place. Too bad. Jim

Now it seems all of us have people we don't like for this or that. Really, who should care if someone on a computer doesn't like you? Me for example, some of the people I can't stand are the same that got me to try the pump. This place lost focus, and it's too bad we can't drop the insults, religious overtones and everything else and do what we used to do best. I remember a good friend from here, Faye, she is no longer with us now, she was the nicest person you could meet. All she wanted to do was to be helped and to help others. It would be nice to get back to that, but I guess all the anger would have to be dealt with. The DHD site, was not set up for very self rightous and run by christian fundamental religionists. They have appointed censors and will ban or give shame if they do not like your views. This is nothing but lies our little friends here would like for everyone to believe.

It is true that some of us on that site are Christians and pray for those who want prayers, but we do not force it on anyone. We do not have censors, we have monitors, I myself am one of them, but have never had to do anything in that capacity. We do not shame anyone. Everyone there has the right to state their views and we never attack each other as is done here.

This site was once a very good place to come. Just wish it could be that way again.

On Tue Jan 21 08:42:33 2003 Re: ACTOS () said:
Actos is the brand name of the drug, Pioglitazone. It is an antihyperglycemic agent, meaning it is designed to REDUCE the amount of glucose in the blood. This is done two ways: 1) it helps the body respond better to insulin making it easier for the cells to receive and use it and 2) it reduces the amount of sugar produced by the liver. Together this can help reduce blood sugar levels. Actos is usually combined with diet and exercise in treating Type 2 diabetes. If you are taking Actos, your doctor should perform regular blood tests to monitor liver function (some doctors refer to this as a "liver panel screen"). It can be done using a blood test. Some over-the-counter medications for cough, cold, flu, etc. can impair or react oddly to Actos. Always ask your doctor or pharmacist before taking any over-the-counter medications if you take Actos.

Isn't it ironic that the very people who began the trashing of this place several years ago by attacking people who their beliefs and thoughts are now the ones crying about what this place has become? Right, Marc? I am reminded of an old computer term: GIGO, which means Garbage In Garbage Out. You reap what you sow. Right, Marc? There has been a long history of disrespect, anger, hatred, bigotry on this board. And people are actually surprised at the result? Thank you to people like Marc, CB/Squats, Jim, Tom, and others who helped drag this place through the muck and mud. Sure it's a shambles now, but look at all the people with axes in one hand and mud in the other. You get what you deserve.

To 01:00 Thank you for the information, think I'll leave that site alone, don't think they would care to hear my views about a lot of things, including diabetes. I'm sure they must have know it alls there, why else would you have to sign in, and leave your addy, sounds like a bunch of goody two shoes to me. Don't think it's right not to be able to state one's views of things that drive me crazy. Later Gators

Hi Barney, yes you have to post your address and profile to get on DHD, they are not a bad group just very self rightous and run by christian fundamental religionists. They have appointed censors and will ban or give shame if they do not like your views.
