The DHD group makes regular attacks here demanding that the site be shut down, citing their moral and religious reasons for wanting this closed down. Oh well.....anyone here on Actos ?

So now I want to know does anybody take ACTOS? On emails - real names no way; default email addresses not a chance; but if you have free email like hotmail or yahoo you are inundated with porn anyway. Two choices with the porn - delete or forward it to the abuse@_______ Most of it is spoofed anyway but they do go after those dumb enough to use actual addresses. A couple of years ago there was an individual posting with a default email and just to see how risky that is I did some checking, came up with her name, address, phone, and an arial view of her home. NO REAL NAMES NO HOME EMAILS

I just was re=reading the sleep study that was posted. Pardon me,but I was taught by doctors (including ones in my own family) that salt in large amounts could be harmful for not only diabetes, but those who are on blood pressure drugs, who have high blood pressure. Though I knew a friend of my late father, who had a need for salt in very amounts, when we asked him,(he was over 84,he died at 92 years old,) he explained he could not give a reason, except in the Nazi prison camps that he spent,he needed salt for his health. Many foods including deli, and smoked meats are high in salt. While very enjoyable, one should be watch their diet, eating these meats as a special meal only. Try to work them into your meal plan. Consult with your doctor, endo, and diabetes dietician. While there are studies proving large use of Splenda,Nutrasweeet,(etc) harmful, they don't present the full picture. If you must use sugar, honey,or brown sugar, beet sugar, date sugar might be better. There is a natural sugar, used for and by diabetics,Fructose. Use it in small-moderate amounts. Spinach:Alot of people can eat it raw,esp in salads. Very healthy. But contains (like Rubbarb) some type of toxin, that if used too much, prevents the body from absorbing/digesting it properly. I find it best cooked. Very little water needed. Add pepper,(after draining) lemon juice, one or two other mild spices, some butter,(very little) Don't overcook. If you don't care for the taste of spinach, try swiss chard. Marc.

Salt loading? I hadn't seen that before. Next time I see the doc, I will ask him. I do not restrict salt beyond not using it in cooking. 9349 - 7/27/01 SALT RESTRICTION MAY CAUSE DIABETES IN SUSCEPTIBLE PEOPLE Gabe Mirkin, M.D. A recent study from Columbia University Medical School shows that salt restriction raises blood sugar and insulin levels, while salt loading lowers them. Twenty-one people with high blood pressure were given 4 week periods of salt loading and salt restriction. Salt restriction caused a higher rise in blood sugar levels after both heathy people and diabetics were fed a sugar load. Salt restriction caused a higher rise in insulin levels in both diabetics and non diabetics. For years doctors have told people to restrict salt, even those who do not have high blood pressure. Most competitive athletes and serious exercisers know that they cannot recover from hard exercise without taking lots of salt. It is time for the doctors to tell their patients that salt restriction is highly controversial and that many doctors take lots of salt themselves and tell their patients to do the same. You should check with your doctor to see whether salt restriction will help or harm you. Marc - yes it makes sense, taken that any food or beverage taken in high amounts brings to further complications. Just asked coz it didnt sound logic that salt would affect the actual rise of blood glucose. Of course it's not recommended to anyone if they tend to oversalt their food.

On Sun Jan 19 17:05:34 2003 Marc () said:
Hi Tasha: ok,about avoiding or I note, using salt in limitation: type 2 diabetics are often on blood pressure drugs like an older one,Monopril, usually given to protect both kidney function and help control and prevent any cardiac problems. It is much older than the current blood pressure drugs, and can cause a sudden drop in blood pressure,or dizziness upon standing,so alot of doctors now prescribe a newer type of blood pressure drug,to both further protect renal function, and cardiac related problems. One of them is called Atacand. It also has fewer side effects than older blood pressure drugs. That is why newer and more effective type 2 oral diabetic drugs are being developed. There is also inhaled insulin. As for your question of why salt for diabetics should be if not avoided, then, used with care, first, salting one's food too heavily you end up not tasting the food, salt tends to overpower your taste buds if used too much, second,I would try some other spices-like pepper, basil, etc. (Sorry if this is long) The aim of taking blood pressure drugs is to protect renal function, often compromised in all diabetics. By using salt a great deal, you risk further diabetic complications. I hope this helps. Marc.

CB,thanks for your friendly posts. You keep up the good work you have been doing. I am going to see my cardiac doctor ASAP;been suddenly having worsening heart problems. It's been 3 years since I had cardiac tests. Given my family history of heart arrythmias, and cardiac problems,I will see him as soon as he is able to see me. I can't and don't wish to get into it here, but I'm concerned over my mother and sister's health problems, the point I am (I hope) trying to make here is that almost everything in a diabetic's life can add to stress. Keeping the stress levels and sugar control-one must work to not allow the use of eating certain foods (at night) since as I'm sure you are aware, food is and can be comforting for a diabetic. In all ways/things-moderation is important. If you try too hard with controlling blood sugars, eating at night,or dealing with stress, you can end up with worse sugar control. I'm speaking from my own personal experience. Marc.

CB,you and Faith and Jim and Tasha + I all agree=this site no longer lives up to the once meaningful ideals. I would add one diabetic related advice : for those type 2 diabetics on any oral diabetic drugs,Avandia,Metformin,Diabeta,be aware they do all carry warnings of cardiac problems. I know that there is no diabetic that is able to have perfect control of one's glucose sugars. If you feel frustrated, and tend to overeat, try to keep some sort of written diary of your daily food intake, and make an effort to limit your snacking, esp at night,I'm speaking for those type 2 diabetics, who might experience fluctuating sugars, and have your meters checked. Even the best of them can give a false reading. Be careful about eating too many sugar free foods, they have carbs, some medical side effects, can raise your sugars too. Watch your salt. Marc.

CB,Tasha,Faith: this board no serves it's purpose: to help other diabetics. As I stated before, it does not matter whether one is on insulin,or oral diabetic pills,or controlled by diet,or a combination of the above, all diabetics need support, friendship, encouragement, sympathetic understanding. Sadly, these things are not here anymore. Not on this chat board. The Diabetes And Education Board's statements: That no one should be subject to written abuse,or any form of abuse of character,or racial hatred, makes nice reading, but all these idealistic words are only a false front. Everyone who is a diabetic has to deal with one or another medical problem,no one wants to take oral diabetic drugs,do fasting, take insulin,or have to use diabetes meters to do blood glucose testing. A cure for diabetes is what all diabetics wish for. (Marc)

Do you mean to say that warnings about transfatty acids are stupid, High fat diets, especially for sedentary diabetics are great, whole grains are nonsense, carb loading is good, weight training is bad, poor nutrition affecting the immune system is a lie, white flour is good, flaxseed oil does not help prevent heart trouble, the heart is not a muscle, the body is made up of carbs, lipoproteins are metabolized as proteins, not fat, heat does not affect good fats, diabetics need to load up on processed, heat treated foods, since it is absolutely essential not to take in vitamins of any kind, nutritional research has not advanced in the past twenty years, healthy eating means only miniscule quantities of protein, all incomplete, lots of fat, and high carbs, etc, etc? I have posted the opposite of what I have learned. It seems "nincompoop" only defines the one who labeled me such! Being over 50 years of age, I can still weight train, am not fat, and can easily get around. All that on a moderate carb, low fat, low to moderate protein diet!
