USA TODAY......Scales tip in favor of
new food pyramid By Nanci Hellmich, USA TODAY A new version of the food pyramid
could have a major impact on what Americans eat because it's used by dieters,
taught to schoolchildren and plastered on bread packages. The final verdict on
any changes won't be out until 2004, but until then there's plenty of room for
discussion. Since the pyramid was released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture
in 1992, nutrition scientists have criticized the content and design and
proposed numerous alternatives, including the Healthy Eating Pyramid, California
Cuisine Food Pyramid, Mediterranean Diet Pyramid and Soul Food Pyramid. Some
experts think the USDA pyramid desperately needs this reassessment. "You can
think of the pyramid as a dowdy old lady who never got a new wardrobe," says
Alice Lichtenstein, a professor of nutrition at Tufts University in Boston. "She
hasn't been updated on the basis of new scientific evidence and new dietary
recommendations." "It's severely out of date," says Walter Willett, chairman of
the department of nutrition at Harvard School of Public Health. He says the
pyramid doesn't reflect the latest research on nutrition and weight control, and
it may be contributing to obesity and health problems in this country. Judi
Adams, president of the Wheat Foods Council, an industry group that promotes
eating grains, agrees that it needs some "tweaking," including emphasizing whole
grains more. The government pyramid, created as a tool to teach the U.S. Dietary
Guidelines, took on many shapes before it was released. Officials tested images
of a plate, a bowl and a shopping cart before choosing the pyramid. "We are
looking to make sure the recommendations are consistent with the most recent
science, and that it (the pyramid) is better interpreted by the public," says
Steven Christensen, acting director of USDA's Center for Nutrition Policy and
Promotion. The agency is taking a hard look at the design and messages. The USDA
is also reviewing new nutrient recommendations from the National Academies'
Institute of Medicine, which include advice on many things from dietary fiber to
daily activity. "We are looking to see if the servings in the Food Guide Pyramid
meet the new recommendations," says the agency's John Webster. He says many
people use the graphic image and don't study the guidance that elaborates on the
pyramid's meaning (found under food guide pyramid at www.cnpp.usda.gov). "It has
become a stand-alone image, and people don't necessarily associate it with the
text that goes with it." That text includes recommendations on consuming low-fat
or non-fat dairy products, eating less saturated fat and choosing several
servings a day of foods made from whole grains such as whole-wheat bread and
whole-grain cereals. People may look at the base and think they can consume
anywhere from six to 11 servings a day from the bread, cereal, rice and pasta
group. However, the text explains that the number of servings that one should
eat is based on calorie consumption. So a person consuming about 1,600 calories
a day should have about six servings from the grain group; a person consuming
2,200 calories a day should have about nine servings and 2,800 should have about
11 servings. Webster says many spinoffs of the symbol have been pyramids. "It's
probably the most recognized nutrition symbol that's ever been developed." Among
the alternatives is one designed by Willett called the Healthy Eating Pyramid.
In it, he puts daily exercise and weight control at the base, recommends eating
whole-grain foods at most meals and suggests eating vegetables "in abundance."
He places emphasis on plant oils, like olive, canola and soy, and gives fish and
poultry a higher profile than red meat, which he recommends eating sparingly.
Willett, author of Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy, objects to the fact that the
government pyramid doesn't distinguish between types of fats and lumps them all
together at the top with the advice to "use sparingly." Not all fats are equal,
he says. Two types of fat - saturated fat, found in whole milk and fatty red
meat; and trans fatty acids, found in many margarines and vegetable shortenings
- should be limited because they contribute to the artery-clogging process that
leads to heart disease, stroke and other problems, he says. But monounsaturated
and polyunsaturated fats found in vegetable oils, nuts, other plant products and
fish are good for your heart, Willett says. Mary Young of the National
Cattlemen's Beef Association says any changes to the meat group "would concern
me. I don't think the science would support minimizing the meat group that
everybody needs, in particular kids." Adams says Americans are eating about one
serving of whole grains a day when they should be eating three. But she says
there's not enough science to back up the idea of consuming only whole grains.
Lichtenstein says how fats are displayed on the pyramid is a problem. Plus, the
image should emphasize low-fat and non-fat dairy products, eating fish a couple
of times a week and daily physical activity, she says. She believes a new visual
image is needed "to better convey that there has been a change in the types of
recommendations we are making." But USDA's Christensen says the current shape
works. "Changing our symbol to something else would be like shooting ourselves
in the foot." Pyramid ideas should be sent to: USDA Center for Nutrition Policy
and Promotion, 3101 Park Center Drive, Room 1034, Alexandria, Va. 22302

FROM MSNBC..... NEW PILLS AND A patch
are being developed that could eventually replace the multiple insulin
injections most diabetics must endure daily to control their disease. The number
of patients who could benefit is enormous. According to the American Diabetes
Association (ADA), approximately 3.7 million diabetics must take one to five
insulin shots daily to keep their blood sugar under control. Researchers have
tried for years to develop an effective version of insulin pills, without much
luck. In the past, insulin from pills was often unable to reach the surface area
of the gut where most of the absorption takes place. In the event that the pill
did reach the targeted area, it was often degraded before being able to enter
the bloodstream and deliver its medicinal effects. But several researchers are
now discussing technological advances that have been made in delivering insulin
via alternative routes like pills, and even a skin patch. Two different drug
companies have pills that are still in the early stages of development-it could
be two years or more before they hit the market-that already show signs of
achieving some success. The first pill facilitates absorption into the liver and
then the entire bloodstream. Maximum insulin concentration levels can be seen
within 15 to 25 minutes-quite similar to the body's natural production and
release of insulin that's seen in the pancreas. The second pill uses a type of
technology that prevents it from being broken down before it reaches the
bloodstream, fixing the old problem of pills that have failed in the past.
Manufacturers found the greatest absorption when this pill was taken 15 minutes
before the meal. There is also renewed interest in using a skin patch to deliver
insulin. This treatment involves a two-step process. First, patients apply an
electronic adhesive patch powered by a small battery directly onto their skin.
In less than a second, the cells on the skin surface are painlessly vaporized,
creating important microscopic openings through which the medication can be
delivered. Next, a small patch that contains a reservoir of insulin is applied
to the skin as one would apply a Band-Aid. The manufacturer reports that during
a 12-hour period of wearing the patch, insulin is steadily absorbed into the
body. The patch is still in development and is not likely to be available for at
least another year, but researchers are optimistic about its possibilities. If
one treatment doesn't work, researchers say diabetics could try both methods.
The patch would deliver the basic level of insulin a person will need throughout
the day and night, while the pill could provide the extra dose that's needed
around mealtimes. Though it's not yet clear which of the various treatments, or
combinations of treatments, will work best, one thing is clear: either method
would be a welcome change for the millions of diabetic Americans still suffering
through daily needle injections.

costly. He had a doctor set up his doses of R and N which are the only insulins
he has been able to tolerate - the Humalins. But he adjusts on sort of a sliding
scale according to how he feels. Gets his insulin from a benefactor in the US.
It isn't very available where he is. The nearest specialist is about 100 miles
(150K)away and the local doctors don't know much about diabetes. He lives on $50
a month -remember socialist country the expenses aren't as they are here either.
Doctors recommended a "diabetes camp" - training sessions as we have here but
they aren't available where he is. So for those of the praying persuasion here
is a good case, his name is Peter in English. For those who want to wallow in
their own misery - think on his and you should feel better about yourself. For

used longterm it can cause Type II diabetes - that is the source of my sister's
diabetes according to her doctors. She took it for arthritis. RX meds - medic
alert bracelets etc are fine BUT the sad fact is we discover which meds we
cannot take by taking them and then having the reactions. Update on youngest
daughter who can't take Albuterol. She can't take the new classification of
antibiotics either, they have tried 3 in a row and she had reactions to all 3,
just not life-threatening level. So back to Levaquin she CAN take. So much for
new miracle 5-pill cures! And the scarey thing is INSULIN reactions are just as
risky. They come up with some fabulous new one and try giving it to everyone,
deny there are going to be problems, and send a lot of people to hospitals for
help from doctors who just "can't believe it is the insulin". right. Pete was
just lucky he survived the Humalog incident. YOU HAVE TO BE PROCATIVE FOR

way to explaining the causes of different sexual preferences, the team at Oregon
Health & Science University said. "We are not trying to explain human
sexuality by this study," Charles Roselli, a professor of physiology and
pharmacology who led the study, said in a telephone interview. "Whether this is
a big component of what contributes in humans, that's still debatable." Working
with a team at the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Sheep Experiment Station in
Dubois, Idaho, Roselli's team studied 27 sheep -- 10 ewes, nine rams that mated
only with other rams and eight rams that mated only with females. The "gay"
sheep are strongly homosexual, Roselli said. "They don't pair-bond," he said.
"But they are exclusive. They don't court or mate with females. They only court
and mate with males."

Defense League leader Irv Rubin, jailed for allegedly plotting to bomb a mosque
and an Arab-American congressman's office, was hospitalized Monday after trying
to kill himself, a U.S. Marshal's Service spokesman said. Rubin used a razor
blade in the 6 a.m. suicide attempt and was undergoing surgery at a hospital
five hours later, spokesman Bill Woolsey said. Rubin was scheduled to appear in
court Monday for a hearing in his case. Rubin and associate Earl Krugel were
arrested December 11 on charges of plotting to bomb the King Fahd mosque in
suburban Culver City and an office of Rep. Darrell E. Issa, R-Calif. Rubin and
Krugel were arrested after an FBI informant delivered an explosive powder that
authorities believed was the last component in making pipe bombs. The charges
carry up to 40 years in prison upon conviction. Rubin, who by his own account
has been arrested more than 40 times, joined the JDL early in the 1970s and
quickly moved up, becoming chairman in 1985. In 1989, the leader of the rival
Jewish Defense Organization was charged with firing shots at Rubin and wounding
three others in New York. Mordechai Levy was convicted of assault. According to
his biography, Rubin learned to fight anti-Semitism while growing up in
Montreal, "where some hotel owners and other business people hung signs reading
'No Dogs or Jews Allowed' on their doors and where French Canadian
schoolchildren taunted him because he was Jewish."
