Balance? Where did it go? The 60/20/20 diet looks pretty good when compared with the furor raised by the "peta posters"! Everybody take note that there was no response to my request for an 1899 calorie day's intake per peta principles. Also no response to the truth that insulin gotten from animals saved millions of lives. Since when is a steer more valuable than a human being? PETA thinks so. It also looks good to those who swear by Atkins. Super high protein IS dangerous. Branched Chain Amino Acids can help those who must restrict protein (no, these are not harmful chemicals!), so it is worth asking the doc about using them. Same for glutamine (an amino acid). OK AP, go for it! Twist what I just posted.

Jim, please note the words "information, advocacy and public awareness." In non-profit speak, that's management expenses, office supplies, salaries, depreciation, rent/mortgage, office equipment, travel, bonuses, etc. Don't let some overcooked financial statement fool you. Less than 40 cents of every dollar goes into actual life-saving research. And that's on the high end for any non-profit organization. The good ones survive on 60% or less of the income raised; less well-managed ones can eat up more than 80%. That's too much WASTE for me.

Good morning everyone. I read the article about the person who was a "diabetic no more" and have a few observations. First, the article says it was written in 1997 after 4 months of this new lifestyle. Five years has went by and not further testimonial on this site from this person. Second, she says that every now and then she has a "setback when I eat things I know I'm not supposed to eat". That comment would make me think that this person is not "cured" as she claims, instead, she just has good control. There is no cure yet for diabetes. I didn't click on and of the menu items to the left of the article, but I wonder what they're selling? Jim

To ? who mentioned an article about a woman who was "cured" of diabetes. Type 2 can be improved with weight loss, which a raw foods diet brings about. Organic fruit and veggies eaten raw have all their nutrients intact. Best way to go. However, some supplementation may be called for since certain nutrients are lacking. I say "may" because sedentary diabetics ought not use some of them anyway. The site looks interesting! Thank you.

Squats I am not trying to get involved in a controversy with you. I am only trying to expand on the meaning of the term "KOSHER". This term has fallen into misuse and abuse in recent years. You can go into any grocery store and buy "KOSHER" dill pickles which are not "KOSHER" by any stretch of the imagination. To the orthodox Jew the term "KOSHER" means that the preparation facility has been inspected by a Rabbi and the preparation of the food and the food itself meets all the biblical rules that make it safe for consumption by Orhodox Jews and thus is "KOSHER". If a commercilally prepared food meets all these standards it will bear the ID of the Rabbi that did the inspection. The "KOSHER" brand of weiners and sausages is a good example. They contain no pork and no blood as the consumption of blood is outlawed in the scriptures along with pork, shellfish, and other unclean foods. I know of no requirements that animals be slaughtered in a humane way only that all the blood has to be drained from the animal before it can be eaten. FYI

I can't help but wonder if the points being made about testing on animals and it's effects on our diabetic lives won't be the same types of points made regarding SCR in 10,15, 20 years from now. No, I am not saying an animal and a fetus are the same, but ethics and morality regarding these issues are. What some find to moral or ethical others are offended by what they perceive to be immoral. But isn't it all for the betterment of man? Or woman, I must be PC ya know. The logic behind science is to cure and treat disease, which makes our lives better. There are those who are opposed to testing on animals who take insulin every day, and when a cure or a better treatment comes along from SCR then most will take that cure. Faith, you may not, but you would be the exception rather then the rule. For most, the desire to live a better life would outweigh the moral or ethical ways that a cure was found. Not all, but I suspect most would. Either way, just thought I would think that outloud. ........Marc

Hi Faith, CB, and everyone else. On the PETA issue, there's no way I believe any of their members live their entire lives without leather, medicines made from or tested on animals, OR that they would pull off the highway to bury a bird they accidently may have killed with their car. To me, killing a cow in an inhumane method such as "live" butchering, for example, or something to that affect is wrong. As long as it is as quick as possible. I think PETA started out as a group with good intentions, but has turned fanatical (sp) over the years. Without animal testing, we would not have the life expectancy we have today. There are parts of the world that anything living is eaten, even dogs. How do you suppose that humans evolved over the years without animal meat for food, and animal fur for warmth? Had they not done that we wouldn't be here to argue it. I think all the PETA people should pool their money and buy a small island to live on so they don't have to get sick in a restaurant watching us eat our steak. After about 20 years when the animals are overunning their Utopia and eating the humans, maybe then they'll understand animal population control and the need for it, as well as the need for the food because they most certainly will run out of coconuts and bananas. That is, unless the lack of insulin from animals kills them first. Jim

Ammar: I got a little sarcastic in my post; I apologize. It is true that Diabetes cannot be cured, only controlled. It is also true that vegan diets can deprive one of necessary nutrients, unless supplements are taken. By all means, consult a competent nutritionist.

Do away with chemical food supplements? No way! Glutamine, Amino acids, Proteins are useful for treating body wasting illnesses. BTW, the forgoing are chemical compounds, but are found in many foods. They also increase athletic performance and are useful in baseball, football, track/field, powerlifting, hocky, etc. They can also have an application for those who do heavy physical labor, since they help recovery and can prevent injury. While they are best not used by sedentary diabetics, vegans ought to use them carefully to get nutrients lacking iin veggies and fats. Amino acids can be used WITHOUT increasing total protein intake. So can glutamine, an amino not found in veggies. Use of these supplements is really quite scientific.

On Wed Oct 9 14:24:50 2002 Squats () said:
Ammar: There is no cure for Diabetes. Be careful, the PETA site does contain some quackery. Diabetes can only be controlled by means of diet, medication, and exercise. The key is to lose as much muscle mass as possible since fat is lighter. A CDE can help you get weak. She can physically put you into a sedentary mode of existence. PETA is even worse!

Recent posts are saying "there is to be no further advancement of Diabetes research, no testing of medications or testers or implants of any kind UNLESS you start with people first. I can't help but wonder if the political agenda is killing off as many people as possible, including diabetics! BTW, why is it that it is ok to kill babies for stem cells but NOT ok to even test a new medication on an animal? I guess we diabetics should crawl off and die, huh? Why not do away with plastics, electricity, motors, etc.?

Yesterday there was a very interesting article in the San Antonio Express-News, our local paper. It was about a drug being tested locally, and numerous other places, regarding the testing on people, (it already has been tested on laboratory animals), with diabetes. The compound helped the muscles burn blood fat and sugar and, in the process, helped them lose weight. The drug has no name yet. They are calling it CRE 16336.
