Patients who are on a low protein diet need to be monitored by a qualified dietitian, and should be seen on a regular basis. The urine urea nitrogen is generally a good indicator of protein intake, and can be used as a feedback tool.* Patient and staff motivation are key elements to making this dietary lifestyle work. (0.31 X body weight (kgs)+(Urine nitrogen X 6.25) = protein intake when in metabolic balance).

Dear Mack, here are 2 phone numbers that should help, I got them from the IHS website at Rockville , Office of Clinical and Preventive Services 1-301-443-4640, Office of Diabetic Services and Programs 1-505-248-4182

Dear Mack my wife is also a diabetic specialist at a IHS clinic in the Minneapolis area, I asked her and you have a regional person for training and staff development that you should contact. Are you a tribal or a IHS employee ? If you are a tribal employee have your tribal community resources person provide the name of the training specialist, if they cannot just call any other IHS facility and ask for their tribal outreach DE person. All tribes have one. Hope this helps.

Faith, how do you know that one of the AP's is Tom Kinney? If so, the poor guy is bitter and hateful. Also if one cannot reason with the AP's here, maybe a site called hate.com would be more apropos! I wasted too much time last night asking questions that were left unanswered! With the exception of the guide to find that magazine of which I questioned the existence, I see only name calling and scare tactics from the other side. I don't have to convince you that this is not the way to arrive at truth! Take care!

Faith if the truth is unreasonable for you do not come over here and whine at us. You are already the DHD censor, do you want to be the censor here now ?

CB - Haven't you realized yet, you can not reason with Tom and the other AP's on here. Just keep posting and helping those that come on here for help. It is obvious that 'they' can't!

Gordon was not chased from here, he chose to leave after people questioned why he would not give credit to authors of material he was posting as his own. So get your facts straight., Also there is a Journal of Renal Dialysis,It is a monthly magazine.. I have it here...and with the speed at which medical tech moves a 8 year old study is far out of date no matter what you think. Check the Mayo and Marshfield Archives and you will find the cross reference.

OK! Can't win! Go vegan with all carbs/fats and waste away. Get kidney disease and waste away. Hey ....whoever called me a Nazi bigot, what help will that be to any one checking this site to get a question addressed? You and your ilk only know how to name call, you are ignorant, maybe stupid. Your ilk cannot answer any serious questions at all, whether someone else's or mine. Maybe I should add reading to the list, since I am still getting flack over "chemical" supplements after I said I would no longer recommend any. Where is the admission that the FDA website was misquoted, that a non existent magazine was cited tonight? Where is the retraction of the mythical Metax with ephedrine? Where? I forgot, what of the vegan scare tactics posted here? The vegans, of course can't explain what consuming only carbs and fats is healthy. A vegan diabetic must avoid virtually all dark green and yellow veggies and citrus fruits. I was reminded of that here some time ago. BTW, what kind of idiot would question the credibility of the New England Journal of Medicine? Granted, the article is 8 years old; I will question my doc on further studies. I am owed an apology for the Nazi crack. It is too much to expect common decency from you, isn't it? I hope no one comes here for help; they won't get it. Not from you. One whose knowledge is greater than mine, Gordo, has been chased from here. So, you can now get back to Jew hating, arguing over stem cell research, or whatever else you think (think?) Nah, you can't think.

"Distain"(sp sic)? Hardly. If and only if you are weak and sickly BECAUSE of bad diet, you only have yourselves to blame. It is one thing for this illness to cripple with complications. It is quite another to be crippled because of refusal to do what needs to be done to stay healthy! Before they were all chased away, many here with serious complications did the best they could. Should I ever be in their place, I would hope to fight as well as they do. I could list several names...apart from me, no one has posted a name today. No one! If I with my "diet of death" hurt people, what of the false posts? The mythical Metax with ephedra!!! It remains true that Diabetics should be extremely careful with protein supplements. I agree. If you don't work out intensely. no need to use them. But if you do go for the intensity, a protein shake for recovery can help. provided there isn't kidney disfunction.

High protein meat eater's diet? Who advocated that? What does "sufficient" mean? Same ol same ol! Diabetics must eat crappy and lose lean mass because of it. When will it be learned that the RDA will not work for everybody? It won't because some here refuse to learn. It is so easy to blame diabetes instead of bad nutrition! It is so easy to pop a Centrum and think you are getting vitamins when the whole capsule goes out the other end. I do not expect any reasonable response, but will ask another question. Why are carbs and fats the sole nutrients a diabetic needs? Why? Second, where in my last post did I advocate a high protein diet? I have expressed concern re the "Atkins Diet" and even the "Zone." Of course, it is easier to attack. This will help no one. To the poster below: Too bad you can't give a real answer. On the std, recommendations, the individual would waste away anyway or get fat. BALANCE BALANCE BALANCE, but some do not know enough to do that!

What do you tell a 175 lb person when his high protein diet starts to make his diabetic kidneys fail and he becomes too weak to keep his job ? To keep on with it because a 8 year old study 'from a LARGE group' says by someone elses non-medical interperation that it is ok to keep on with the meat and chemical supplements ? When he is too weak to do anything but reach the keyboard because he is on a machine to stay alive ? How about it Squats ? Strong advice you give..huh ?

Where is the Journal of Dialysis and Renal Care? I couldn't find it. You making stuff up again? What do you tell a former 175 pound active individual who on the "low protein diet", drops 10 lbs of muscle per month and loses his job, because he is too weak to do it. Does this HAVE to happen? Been there. no thanks! Since when is sufficient protein high protein? Since you are too weak to do anything, you have plenty of time to answer these questions. Are you too weak to use a keyboard yet?

I did not post the article from the New England Journal of Medicine. I have read that study. I know of a well qualified endocrinologist who goes along with the New England Journal of Medicine. Personally, my protein intake is well below the 142 gms on a 1700 calorie diet. Having said that, the vegans here are emotional and will not deal with a protein free diet, which you do not want. Furthermore, I don't want to hear of diabetic athletes. They are all second rate, since their non diabetic gompetitors eat and train better, therefore they are leaner and stronger. A diabetic in pro sports cannot follow ADA or Vegan recommendations. If he/she does, he/she isa too weak to compete. Take it easy, weak vegan!

On Sat Sep 28 17:06:31 2002 New England Journal of Medicine (Protein Damaging Kidneys) said:
Experts recommend that 30 percent of your kcalories come from protein. This would be about 500 of the kcalories of the gentleman who weighs 142 pounds and needs 1,700 kcalories each day. Because a gram of protein is 4 kcalories, he can eat 125 grams of protein. Translating that into ounces of meat, because there are 7 grams of protein in each ounce, he can eat 18 ounces of meat daily. Using the preceding lists, he can eat 8 ounces of flounder at one meal and 8 ounces of dark meat chicken at another with 2 glasses of milk providing the rest. A lot of controversy exists with regard to how much protein should be in the diet. Many authorities call for less than 30 percent, usually preferring a diet that has 20 percent of calories as protein. One reason has to do with the large fat content of some protein sources. However, if you select protein with less fat, you can solve that problem. A second reason cited for less protein is the suggestion that protein has a damaging effect on the kidneys. Several studies have shown this to be the case, but a very large study in the New England Journal of Medicine (volume 330, page 877 in 1994) a few years ago came to a different conclusion. It showed that low-protein diets did not preserve kidney function any better than a high-protein diet. The jury remains out on this question of lower versus higher protein diets.
