Faith... a couple of things. First off I suggest setting your basal rates a tenth or 2 higher for the next two days. The steroids in that shot are going to kill the sugars. Second, diabetes causes something called a frozen shoulder. I couldn't give you the technical reason why, but it is a "freezing" or lack of range of motion and it takes up to 6 months to work through. I know what you mean about diabetes being blamed for everything, but this may actually apply. Impingement is really common. Julie had surgery for it as did I. PT usually works well and if it worsens, the surgey is real easy. But do the PT and you should be fine. 16:40, now that's original. CYA....... Marc

I went to the Orthopedic clinic today with my right shoulder. It is an impengment type thing. Maybe just a build-up of arthritis. Anyway, they gave me a shot in the shoulder of steriods, and when they went in the 'first' time, I preceeded to faint right there on the table. Ugh! Call me red face!! After I regained my composure, they went ahead with the injection. I can already feel some relief and have a lot of motion back, but I still know that there is something wrong when I move it in some positions. Will re-start PT next week, and then go back in two-three months. And, wouldn't you know it, they blamed diabetes for this!!! Surprise, surprise!! Now, I'll 'really' have to stay on top of my monitering of my BG. I hate what steriods will do to them. You all have a great day!

Protein powders can be dangerous for Diabetics with impaired kidney function! Medical cautions should be heeded. Dialysis/transplant must be avoided. Spoke with someone in a store once who had had a pancreas/kidney transplant, which took care of the Diabetes, but the down side was immunosuppressant drugs at 1200 dollars per month!

Squats why don't you give warnings about diabetics using the powder with renal function problems, I have renal problems and was warned both by my Doc and CDE about the chemical powder supplements and shakes you push on here. Your 'medical advice' is dangerous ! How about setting your ego on the side for the truth ?

On Wed Sep 18 01:19:30 2002 Squats () said:
FDA has nothing on Metax, definitely no warnings! What is Metax? Neither is there a list of protein powders on the FDA site other than powdered baby formulae! Where are the words "in excess"? Huh? Huh? Eat too much food, you get fat! Therfore, we should not eat? Most protein powders have 20-30 grams per serving. Amounts are higher in some meal replacemant powders and shakes. Those can go as high as 65 grams. That is much too much for a Diabetic under most circumstances. Pathetic to read this false info. We who have diabetes don't deserve to be victimized by fallacious claims. Even to the point of making up a product name and lying about what the FDA has to say!

On Wed Sep 18 00:16:50 2002 () said:
John, almost forgot. stay away from the protein chemical and whey food supplements that are on the market such as Metax and others of the same type. These can cause kidney and liver failure. Check the FDA website for a better list.

On Wed Sep 18 00:12:34 2002 () said:
John, Check Vegan. com and PETA.com, for useful safe, no cancer diabetic diets. Also, the poster before this takes the view that the goverment and big business conspire to keep diabetics away from a cure to make money. This is also a extreme religious viewpoint that you can accept or not as you wish. But, in any case beware of the red meat, dairy, high protein cancer diets that also stress and endanger your renal function.

Monday's post castigating milk, eggs, yogurt, and red meat, left out two words "in excess." In moderate amounts, they repair tissue, build up the immune system, and keep metabolism up. But, of course, people get money when diabetics get infections because of nutritional deficiency.

On Tue Sep 17 23:34:10 2002 Squats () said:
John: Use a search engine and type "glycemic index". Carbs on the low end, say brown rice, will cause less of a quick rise in blood sugar than white bread. Having said that, you might be able to eat something that I cannot. People differ. The general rule is "Aoid refined carbs" like white flour, for example. Fiber, as in whole grains, slows blood sugar rise. The FDA now requires sugar content to be listed under carbs. Look for items with the lowest grams of sugar. You will not find a list, but there are principles that will work, like those I have posted.

Borage oil is a fish oil. It helps lower low density cholesterol and increase high density cholesterol, which "scrubs" the arteries of plaque buildup that in time can cause blockage. No, this fat puts little stress on the kidneys. Anyone who has Diabetes should know this stuff! Neither is it an artificial chemical. I took the question as legitimate. In the future please post a name.

Forgot to add this on fats. Keep saturated fats minimal. Those are found in meat and even low fat dairy products. Obviously lean cuts will be better. Substituting healthy fats (flaxseed, borage, fish, grapeseed, olive, etc.) is easy and can stave off heart problems down the road. Most of what I have posted is what a competent CDE will tell you. I don't know why your doc didn't refer you to one!

Shakle: There is not one diet for all Diabetics. Diets vary depending on gender, bodyfat percentage, activity level and TYPE of activity, schedule of activities, long term goals (fat loss, muscle gain, maintenance) Ideally, a visit with a competent CDE will help. Have him/her test for bodyfat, figure out your BMR (base metabolism rate), the minimal calories to maintain your body when doing nothing, THEN add calories for activities. A good diet will have a balance of carbohydrate (fruits and whole grains), protein (stick with COMPLETE PROTEINS, found in soy, eggs, poultry, milk, eggs, yogurt, and red meat.) Some fat is necessary for hormone production and nerve function and I have read that some fats help the body proerly utilize proteins for tissue repair. Whether you are type one or type 2 (you didn't say) will affect diet also. The main goal is to keep blood sugar as close to normal as possible. A CDE can help you balance food and medication if you are on any. Stay positive and in control of your diabetes. You can do it...you can! Pleas post again and let me know how you are doing.
