Atkins is too high in fat and too low in carbs. Overdone, it can lead to serious kidney problems. A diabetic especially must follow a balanced nutritional approach that fits lifestyle and activity level. It is a given that a good multvitamin supplement will be used.

Hi, my husband is 48 years old and is diabetic. He is overweight and my mother in law and most of his side of the family keeps trying to convince him to go on the atkins diet. I've heard this is not safe, does anyone have any information about this?

But really, does it matter, they will do whatever and it's all your choices to believe or not. Have a good one... Marc

Believe me or not, I could care less, those who really know me know better.

Tasha, vitamin D is one of the vitamins that help the absorbtion of calcium, which is why it is added to milk with the calcium. I haven't read that milk causes osteoporosis. Ideally, sufficient trace minerals, including magnesium and boron, also help uptake of calcium. BTW, where did you find that info? I would like to check it out!

On Thu Aug 29 15:41:56 2002 Squats () said:
Tasha: Fructose can be handled with less insulin than sucrose. That is why dietitians speak better of it than sucrose. The fiber in fruit is also helpful. You are right, both are simple sugars. It has been rightly said that most of the carbs in diabetic diets should be of the complex variety, oatmeal, whole grains, yams, etc. Remember, insulin is the "key" that allows glucose into the cells. Thanks for the civil question.

Squats - oh yes, I've also heard some weird things re nuts, namely hazelnuts - that the tiny rind surrounding them contain some toxic elements!?? But I'm not certain about osteoporosis: I have a feeling that the only reason why milk is recommended is calcium and vitamin D but I read somewhere that we as humans cannot have best use of Ca from milk and what is interesting is that, on the contrary, if we do drink milk we are more prone to develop osteoporosis. Food for thought?

On Thu Aug 29 15:29:17 2002 Tasha () said:
Hey Squats! Having read your post I had to add on a question: diabetitians always tended to claim that fructose is acceptable for diabetics while sucrose is not. I cannot see the difference, both being simple sugars and being as quick to get into blood. This confuses me not a little.

More about the dialysis post. Was this individual loading up on 300 grams of protein/day? I have never read that nuts cause kidney damage, especially in the small quantities allowed! Again, I doubt the post is genuine. About dairy products...osteoporosis anyone?

On Thu Aug 29 15:15:06 2002 Squats () said:
Common sense? Common sense? Common sense? Ok, get fat and weak. Loading up on carbs and fats with INSUFFICIENT proteins will make you weak and fat. I agree that overdoing those supplements can be deadly. But what is overdoing? Nobody here ansers that question. You can't because you do not know enough about physiology or food processing. The poster below who blamed protein supplements for dialysis (I do not think it is a real post, since it is anonymous) failed to say how much protein was being consumed, what sort of exercise regimen was being followed if any, whether it was resistance training or not, what bg readings were, etc. This is nothing but verbal scare tactics. BTW, is anyone aware of the fact that the diabetic snack bars are high in sugar, as are the diabetic ready to drink formulae. Please, learn what you are talking about! This is all getting old. When, also, will some of the know nothings here learn that "chemical" supplements is a misnomer? Also, by all means. load up on white flour, margarine, and avoid nutrient dense veggies. By all means, avoid nuts (only a "nut" would say that!) but don't be surprised if you get sick all the time, get fat, get heart trouble, lose a limb(s?), The American Diabetes Association recommends healthy fats, including nuts in moderation. In fact, the ADA recommends 10-20 percent of total calories from protein. Kidney problems of course will change that. As always, issues like this must be worked out between the doc and a competent nutritionist. There are different ways to deal with this. A competent nutritionist will be helpful here. How about cutting the ignorant, emotional scare tactics and learning something? This is all getting old. There is NO DIFFERENCE between a scoop of protein powder with 20g protein and a 3 oz piece of white chicken without the skin. No harm is done if you sub one for the other. Protein is not increased. This has been a long post, but I am dealing with people who know nothing about what they are attacking.

On Thu Aug 29 13:43:58 2002 some help () said:
Here are some helps to overcoming weight problems which usually come about through lack of knowledge or lack of discipline or lust for food: (1). First, repent for yielding to the temptation of lust for food. (Phil 3:19, "Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things".) (2). Then, submit to God and ask Him for the power to overcome gluttony through His Holy Spirit and resist the devil through prayer and obedience to God. (James 4:7, "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you".) (3.) Next, ask for God's plan for your weight loss. Allow Him to lead you as to what He wants you to do. He knows your body and He will direct you as to how you are to eat. Ask for a desire for healthy foods and ask Him to remove your cravings for unhealthy foods. (1 John 5:14-15, "And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:15 And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him".) (4.) Daily, thank God for setting you free and do not allow the devil to discourage you by his condemning whispers to your mind. Sometimes the Lord does a quick work at other times it may be slower. Don't be discouraged even if at times it seems slow or you fail occasionally.. Remember, this came "little by little" and it is sometimes more healthy to lose it "little by little" (Losing as little as 2 lbs. a month amounts to 24 lbs. in a year). In the process you will be developing new habits and disciplines that will eventually become established eating patterns. (Romans 8:1-4, "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: 4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit".) (5.) Add fasting periodically as the Lord leads. Even fasting one meal or one day a week will help in disciplining your body to be subject to your spirit man. (Matthew 6:17-18, "But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; 18 That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly".)

It is easier when you are diabetic to sometimes change your needs than it is to accomodate them. Try to find a substitute for "when I study I have a need to snack" by finding a substitute need. Things that are easier for a diabetic - drink large volumes of fancy tea with artificial sweetener - bath - or try the old faithful and chew your pencil. Good luck and really try to redirect the need.

I also was eating those trail mixes made up of nuts and dried fruits....to help lose weight..so I thought...nuts were almost as bad as the whey protein....none of us want to be fat but STAY AWAY from those protein supplements and diets with red meat, nuts and dairy products.

Peggy, As was said do not panic. An adjustment to your eating habits may just do the trick. My husband recently was DX'd as a Type II diabetic. Was put on oral meds and lost around 20 lbs. He cut back on the # of carbs, (practically did away with all starches), and is now already off the oral meds. He was taken off at first because of some MINOR kidney warning signs, but once off, the doctor decided he didn't need to go back on. All this to say, changing your eating habits and exercising, should do wonders.

WARNING: Protein powders and shakes should be avoided at all costs. Doesn't matter if you are a weight lifter or a couch potato. Call your doctors and ask, if you want to be on dialysis, listen to Squats. But if you like your kidneys then call your doctor before listening to this guy.Common sense, diabetes strains the kidneys, why would anyone ADD protein to the diets?Stay away from his advise until doctor clearance or enjoy the consequences of dialysis.

To Ap below, the FDA to my knowledge issued no warning about Metr-x. The warning was issued regarding Ephedra, a stimulant teamed up with Mahuang and caffeine for use in THERMOGENICS. I have been told diabetics should not use them. Good advice. Ephedra is not a standard ingredient in either protein powders/drinks or meal replacements. But always read ingredient labels. Since I posted that I would no longer recommend specific products, I haven't. I am getting tired of repeating myself, but GO to a healthfood store and LEARN what is ACTUALLY in different supplements, even if you won't use them. Maybe, just maybe, your mind will be set at ease.

Besides, I posted about healthy fats. Where do you come up with the idea that healthy fats will kill the kidneys? Where? Now I know where the idea that Diabetics should only eat carbs and fats comes from. It comes from ignorant people who don't know of what they speak, from name callers who lack the intelligence to understand anything. It is no surprise to me that there was no response to my statement about self cannibalization. "I am not breaking" should read "This is not breaking..." Constructive use of protein is to repair and build, not be converted into sugar.

On Tue Aug 27 13:24:27 2002 Squats () said:
I hesitated to post this, but something other than name calling must be posted. Essential fatty acids are lipoproteins that help the body make use of ingested complete proteins. I am not breaking proteins down into sugar, as usually happens with veggie proteins, but contructive use, repairing and preserving muscle mass, new skin, etc. This is called protein synthesis. The human body will do this, even if aminos are lacking. In that case, it cannibalizes itself. The result is loss of lean tissue. Whether diabetic or not, there are only two choices, get what you need from the diet or from your own tissue. Name calling won't work on this one! This is the physiological reality. EFA'a are found in flaxseed oil, filberts, almonds, walnuts, etc. Remember they are to be figured in as FATS. Healthy fats, but fats nonetheless. As always, check with a competent nutritionist.
