CB: I don't know about the beans, lentil question. Beans are good sources of soluble fiber, which is one of the necessary ingredients for natural cholesterol control. It also slows the glucose conversion and/or the uptake of glucose. About peanut butter, One of the added ingredients in PB is the use of hydrogenation to keep the oil from separating out. I try to minimize my consumption of hydrogenized oils as hydrogenation converts molecules to the trans form that the body doesn't know how to handle. This is one of the big objections to margarine. I have only found one form of non-hydrogenated peanut butter and that is Smuckers non-hydrogenated PB. It separates out and requires some stirring but I think that it tastes better. Gordo

Tasha -- I think Zoie meant anxiety. For some diabetics, an anxiety attack may mimic (feel like) a blood sugar low. You might feel shaky, nervous, have a rapid heartbeat, dry mouth, increased or profuse sweating, trembling hands, legs, feet, etc. As someone said, if a diabetic is used to having high readings (say in the 300's), dropping to the low 200's or below may FEEL like a low. Only your doctor can determine the real cause. He/she may also want to check your thyroid function. Just a thought. (I'm not a doctor and I don't play one on TV!)

Tasha, i may not have seen the latest ADA book. I stand corrected! Thank you. Peanut butter can be found that is just peanuts. Better raw peanut butter or almond butter will work. Suggesting cold pressed olive oil is very good. I do it all the time. I was making the point that nut butters are FAT, not protein sources. Thanks again! Hope your physical goes well!

On Mon Aug 19 15:53:04 2002 Tasha () said:
Squats - aren't beans and lentils placed under 'starchy vegetable' in the ADA meal planning lists? Re nut butters: I've always wondered, if peanut butter is not pure peanut butter but contains extra vegetable oil, and if it has also undergone chemical alteration, how can it be more healthy than plain common margerine? I suggest we eat cold pressed, natural olive oil instead.

Been away for several days so I couldn't visit the board. Wed Aug 14 14:37:47 - I'm sorry if my post hurt you, I really wasn't fishing for attention nor was I implying anything or alluding to particular names. Squats - this has been a constant condition for the past couple of weeks or so, no matter how high my sugars were. I check my BG at least 4 times a day at insulin hours. Anna - my ketones were negative all the time. I know what you mean, rapid lowering of BG is nasty. Don't think that this is the case though. When it first occurred a month ago it lasted two days, no longer. Then I thought I was lacking sleep as I had really been overtiring myself (college -> stress and stuff). As of late it has happened more often and I really think it's the thyroid gland. Regular blood test showed there was nothing wrong but next week I'm going to hospital for the yearly check-up and I should be taking more detailed tests so I'm hoping for the best! Jim - I thought about it too, will check on that! Thnx! Zoie - what is aniety? Please excuse my ignorance, English is not my native tongue.

Gprdo: A question....Is it possible that beans, even lentils, are starches since the incomplete proteins in them are turned into glucose and used? Another: Would it not be healthy to use nut butters instead of margarine as a fat serving? There may be some inaccuracies in the food lists.

21:51"14: What time do you have dinner? What is the carb count? Also, you didn't say what kind of insulin you took at night. You might ask your CDE about lowering carbs at dinner. Moderate activity, like a walk, may help. Too much activity at night, and you risk lows while sleeping. Maybe adjusting the time you take your night dose of insulin will help. Just a couple of thoughts. Your doc needs to know about this also.

Hi Tasha, I had an experience like your talking about. Mine turned out to be aneity attacks. I would feel like I was in a low sugar attack, be shaky, sweating, out of sorts and check my bs and they where normal. The doctor put me on meds for aniety for awhile and that took care of it. Might check that out. Z

Tasha; Have you checked if your BG is falling rapidly? In those cases it might feel like a low BG when it isn't. I know many people with diabetes that have false hypoglicemias when they go from high (270) to normal, especially when they hit 200. Also, have you checked for ketones?
