Question:
From Kansas, USA: My teenage son, a type 1 diabetic for 2 years, recently failed
a breathalyzer test for alcohol. I know he had not consumed alcohol of any kind.
His blood sugars had been very high for several days before the test and his
reading at the time of the test was 383. Could he have failed the test due to
acetone in his breath? Answer: The simple answer is that yes indeed breath
acetone could interfere with older versions of the breathalyzer test and cause a
false positive result. I don't know the circumstances in which the test was
required; but if this is a drunk-driving case then you should know that modern
test instruments can distinguish between acetone and other volatile compounds in
the breath like ethyl alcohol, isopropanol and methyl ethyl ketone and so of
course can a blood test. You might want to press for evidence that the positive
test really was due to alcohol and not acetone. There is a considerable
literature on this theme and if you have access to a medical library you might
want to explore it. Some relevant examples are as follows: Jones AW. Interfering
substances identified in the breath of drinking drivers with the Intoxilyser.
J.Analytical Toxicology. 20:522,1996. 'Driving under the influence of acetone'.
Jour. Toxicology-Clinical Toxicology 35:419,1997 (letter). Smith DJ et al. Jour.
Forensic.Science 30:349,1990 -A review of the incidence of contaminants in a
large number of tests in the Seattle area. Gullberg.RG Forensic Science
International 67:65,1994. 'Frequency of apparent acetone in a group of alcohol
data...' You might also want to review further using PubMed searching under
'Acetone in breathalyzer tests'.

my doctor says I can tell I am getting my blood sugars back to "normal" (having
lows before meals). Not exactly a fun way to get "normal" if you ask me! I also
take Glucophage, but unlike Annie, it doesn't do much to suppress my appetite.
Unfortunately, very little suppresses my appetite (ARRGH!). Now if I could find
something to encourage my desire to exercise...

the extended release version. I've been on it for five years, since being
diagnosed. For the entire time, I've been on the low dose of 5 MG, but that was
just changed to 10 mg, since my readings have been creeping upwards. I have not
yet started at the higher dose. About a year ago, the doctor tried me on
Glucophage, but I did not have very good results with it --which means my
experience is more or less opposite that of your husband's. As I understand it,
the two meds work entirely differently -- Glucophage works on the cells,
Glucotrol works on the pancreas. The other difference I noted was that
Glucophage suppressed my appetite, while Glucotrol seems to increase it.

Squats, what do you mean by complete
proteins? According to many sources soya is the only vegetable containing all
the eight essential amino acids our body needs to build and function properly.
What about proteins from milk which are said to not absorb well into our
organism? Whom to trust? I agree as to diabetics lifting weight but of course
only provided that they don't exaggerate (golden rule). Some may have eye
complications and therefore naturally shouldn't lift anything heavy. I've tried
goat milk as well as goat cheese and they're delicious but still contain
cholesterol so I'm rather cautious. Of course one mug of goat milk each evening
won't result in a cardiovascular disease but yet... From meat I still eat
freshly cooked chicken and fish. <*br*> I remember this forum to have been
much more politics free in the years past.

For the non lifter, there are
many good meal replacement powders and protein posders. Most have directions
geared toward the athlete. So amounts must be lowered. To review, ideally, fats
should come from a monounsaturated source and be kept low. Proteins should be
COMPLETE and not 100% soy. Some companies now include a range of different
proteins which can be beneficial. Carbs ought to be from low glycemic sources
and if at all possible, maltodexrin should be avoided. This makes a proper meal
replacement powder hard to find! Boost, Endure, Slimfast, and Glucerna are not
good choices nutritionally. A 1/2 serving of Metrx, for example, will be much
better. All it takes is a comparison of the nutrition label. This is not posted
as an ego trip! I am NOT condemning thuse who disagree with me. The differences
here are sports nutrition versus human nutrition. Athletic diet versus "average
diet." I still believe most diabetics should lift weights, but many cannot.
Others simply will not. That is the reality. You hate this form of exercise?
That is really ok. The important thing is do something, whatever that happens to
be. I do not raise training questions here since I have elswhere to raise them.
Enough said!

13:22:37 Whey protein can do what
you describe ONLY when too much is taken in! By all means, the CDE should be
consulted. Whey protein is definitely NOT a fad, nor is it the "worst" protein
you can take! How about stopping the verbal overkill? If you remember, I brought
it up in the context of getting COMPLETE proteins in a vegetarian context. Also,
for people who must severely restrict fat intake, those products can be helpful.
Again, clear products like these with your CDE. If he/she doesn't know anything
about these products, find one who does.

Thank you everyone for trying to
help. SQUATS: Yes, I already do mix proteins with vegetables. About your
suggestions: First - there are carbohydrates in fruit as well as in bread or
rice. Second - it's true that eating veggies can provide you with just as big
carb intake as eating starch, only you need more veggies. But that's where the
problem occurs eg. in avoiding 100 grams of potato (1 starch unit = 75kcal) and
using 200 grams of carrot and 100 grams of green pepper (3 vegetable units =
75kcal) you actually do get the same amount of calories but as well have the
same amount of carbs in one meal which are then combined with say trout (that's
what I had today, delicious, mmm...) so that confuses me a little. What do you
think? Thanx for the info on Isopure, will try to check about that, even though
I generally never use synthetic products if they can be avoided. (0): I've been
to the recommended site and applied for the Vegetarian Kit :) My meat intake is
very reduced (red meat is history) and from recently I don't eat eggs or drink
milk at all because I feel better (my stomach does) without. I'm having many
doubts as to the vegetarian issue on the scientific side b/ I myself don't have
enough medical knowledge to be able to strictly think this or that way. Animal
testings though are absolutly horrid to think of even though one has to be aware
that if it wasn't for them diabetes could not be cured today.

things you can use if you have any sort of renal problems. It will raise your

and you must be very careful of your protein intake. Be very careful of some on
the diet suggestions you read on this site. Before trying theses fad diet
supplements 'ie, whey protein' discuss it with your DE.

might have been more than the smoking....I found that Amitriptylin helped my
foot pain alot..also my CDE suggested cutting back or stopping eating red meat
as the acid buildup from use of beef affected the nerves in my feet and legs. So
you mike consider less meat in your diet as well as high water intake...
