I think the person who posted about
the Canadian Conference is relaying a good point about lifestyle and exercise in
general. Too bad CB doesn't understand the point they were trying to make. It's
a shame CB can't take his enthusiasm and use it for good - countless times I
have read him belittle someones efforts to exercise because they weren't
"lifting". He is incredibly narrow minded when it comes to his particular form
of exercise. Unless you lift - it doesn't qualify as legtimate exercise! I'm a
masters level swimmer and tho' I'm certain I can't match CB in power lifting - I
can assure you my overall health is just as good. Plus, I've also got the added
bonus of NOT being a complete egomaniacal ASS.

I read a very
interesting book that was published last year by my endo and 3 other people. One
a nutritionist, one a physiotherapist, one my Endo Dr. J. Hunt and the fourth a
man who has been diabetic for 57 years and doesn't have ANY signs of
complications. It is divided into chapters with a subject and then all four
authors gave their perspective on that subject. It was written after(?) during(?)
as a result of(?) a huge world conference that was held in Canada that the only
topic was diabetes and exercise. Out of the people who were attending the
conference there was only 2 diabetic participants that were Type 2 (or maybe
they were the only 2 who admitted to it). so it was very geared to Type 1
diabetics as is the book. The entire proceeds from the sales of the book are
given to the Diabetic Association. People with diabetes have as good a shot as
any other person to maintain a good healthy lifestyle and participate in
activities of their own personal choice. Just as people will consider their diet
content important to their person there are many people who don't, and we are
talking people not people with diabetes. The same can be said for exercise. We
should all try our hardest to diet and exercise and care for our diabetes just
like the people who aren't diabetic and more than likely the percentage of
people who do is the same for both groups. These are choices and we all have
them. Motivation is the key. Everyone has motivation but they choose how and
where to use it. The healthiest diet conscious person I have known recently died
of cancer. It happens. It happens to all of us. Please everyone enjoy your daily
life and the people and things you hold dear to you and try to keep your
diabetes controlled so you may have as many good days as you can. That I feel is
the key to good diabetic control, the will to do your best so you may be as
healthy as possible to be here and enjoy life.

I have Diabetes. With Diabetes, you
can't eat enough to stay healthy; you must carb and fat load. Lifting weights is
out of the question, since you might injure joints, tendond or ligaments. Plus,
the ADA says that you must hold your breath to lift, which is bad for the eyes.
It is NEVER undernutrition that causes health problems....never! Wuth diabetes,
you must avoid all strenuous jobs or activities in the interest of sedentary
behavior. With Diabetes, you must never ever question the CDE who knows all
about nutritional needs! Gender differences don't matter. Therefore forget the
athletics! Maybe it is best that we all die since we are a drain on the
healthcare system! Do I buy what I just wrote? NO! NO! NO! I still have both
arms and both legs and plan to keep them. Is that possible? You bet! Is this
post about Diabetes? Yes, it is! Will you control it or will it control you?
AP's feel free to attack, but you know I am right. Tight stable control is the
best way to stay healthy. I am only repeating the findings of the DCCT.
Everybody here knows that is the case. Am I egotistical? Perhaps, but we will
all be better off if we make the effort to challenge and learn! That is
empirically true! I invite people with real questions to post them. Some of us
are still around who can be of help and want to be of help. Faith, thanks for
the report! Matt, with only a couple of exceptions, the weirdos are the only
ones left. I could care less if they have diabetes. Their verbal abuse is sick!

broncitis. The doctors changed my husband off of glucophage to glucotrol. They
are still running tests on his kidneys. If anyone is on Glucophage, beware! It
will not affect everyone adversly, but it can some.

BTW, I am not "full of bitterness."
I don't know where you got that. What you read in my posts is physiologically
true. A friend of mine has done personal training and would refuse to train a
vegan. Diabetics have sometimes been a problem because they will not tell their
caregivers what the trainer recommends and get guidance in staying balanced on
that program.

OK, so I lift! So what??!!! If I
didn't lift, my diet of course would be different! Both calories and protein
intake would be lower. I take issue with loading carbs and fats into Diabetics.
If 90% of calories come from those sources, something is seriously wrong. Let's
add it up! A 2000 calorie ADA diet in the hospital will have 14gm protein for
breakfast, 21 gm for lunch, and 21gm for dinner. Add another 15 gm for snacks,
maybe. Total 71gm. That might do it while hospitalized. But it won't if you work
construction, let's say. But add in the white flour, potatoes, not yams, without
the skin, white rice, etc. And you are pouring in the sugar. That can be tough
on type IIs! In the real world, if you do physical activity, it ain't enough! If
you do aerobics it won't work. True, what works for me will not necessarily work
for others. No one need tell me that. Standard Diabetic diets? Been there done
that, it isn't healthy.
