SQUATFREAK: I understand your feelings about not settling for things the way they are just because we have D. I posted about my having walked 5 steps on Friday. That isn't much but let me tell you why it was a major victory for me. I was fitted with a prosthesis a year and a half ago. I went to therapy and learned to walk with a cane, short distances 150 to 200 feet. When I realized that this was not going to totally remove me from this chair and that I would still have to use the chair to see drs., go to church, eat out with my wife, or take the grand kids to the zoo I gave up and said it isn't worth all the work. I developed some diabetic ulcers on my remaining leg and the dr. who was treating them said "Son, if you don't use that leg you are going to lose it to!!" I started thinking (That's dangerous) about all the good times I have had in my life in the outdoors. I have been fortunate enough to have left boot prints in every major mountain range west of the Mississippi. I have heard it said that if a man makes one real good friend in a lifetime that he is fortunate. I have been lucky enough to have shared campfires with a bunch of real good friends. I began to realize that I did not have to sit at home and feel sorry for myself anymore. I may never walk the high country after elk again or stand waist deep in a cold trout stream with a fly rod in my hand. BUT, there are things I can do in the woods and on the water. So you know what, I'm going to. I did some leg and ankle extensions since yesterday and I walked 20 steps with the help of the walker today. And I'm going to gain on it every single day. I know I have limitations. I have congestive heart failure with 42% of my heart left. I wear a pacemaker ICD. At the current time the pacemaker is pacing my heart 55% of the time. The ICD will give me a serious electric shock to my heart internally just like the EMT's do with the paddles if my heart goes into either one of the two arrythmia's (SP) that can be fatal. So I know I will not be running any races. And I am aware of what can happen by over doing. My major heart attack came when I was in Re-hab for physical therapy. I had been in the hospital for 2 months and saw Re-hab as my exit door and I wanted out. So, if they told me to do 20 repititions of an exercise I did 200 to 300. That put me in ICU on a vent and a heart pump. So I know to go slow and not get in a big rush. Thanks for the encouragement that it took to get me started again. Herb (Bear)

Fara: My Aunt gave me my Great-grandmothers confirmation certificate today. It is beautiful, nothing like the little pieces of paper we receive today. It is bigger than an 8X10 but smaller than an 11X14. She was born on Feb.12, 1870 and on April 16, 1916 at the age of 46 she was confirmed. I offered to make a copy and return it to her but she told me to keep it. I wish you could see it. She was confirmed in the Evangelical Church. It's amazing what I'm learning from my Aunt about my Father's side of the family. Good luck with your search. Hope you're having as much fun as I am doing this.

Squatfreak-- My husband just got hom;e with the towns bucket loader to remove some of the snow from our yard.--So ;you like stir-r=frys, so you. I made two different ones thhis week and gave half to my diabetic daughter. One was made with chicken and all the colored peppers, onions and fresh tomatoes in a soy sauce and the other was with beef, sugar snow peas, shitaki mushrooms, broccolli, garlic in a teriaki(sp) sauce.. They were sooooooooooo good. If you want the recipe give me a shout through e-mail and I will send them to you. Yours sounded good. I suppose I could use the scollops instead of the beef or chicken in mine.--Now I need to do some kind of exercise to strengthen the "flab" on the under arm and the upper thigh, since losing weight. Any suggestions?

To reason with the wnreasonable makes no sense perhaps, but here goes.... There is more to living with D than just limitations. those of us who post about doing things are saying just that! Verbal viciousness is uncalled for. This sort of anonymous attacking is really cowardly. Perhaps it would be better to say that I can't go to the beach because I maight get a foot infection, When I get a muscle cramp, I will go to bed and call the doctor. I can't play golf because I will be on my feet too much. The possibility of injury precludes football. All bodyweight is bad, so I gotta waste away. Anonymous poster, is this your mindset? SDtop living because you have D? Never!!! I didn't succeed in reasoning because the individual(s)? are unreasonable. It is ok to disagree as long as one is well reasoned in approach!

Can't help but wonder if "correct opinion" has made some of my posts, especially on diet, controversial. E.g. supplementing incomplete proteins tp get the highest benefit from each gram was attacked. With respect to activities, yeah, I lift, and will never stop. It's ok if some don't care to do it. It is another thing if they are SCARED away from it by well0meaning but untaught CDEs. It's ok if complications prevent intense exercise. It is another thing entirely if those same restrictions are given to those without complications. The bottom line here is health and well being. Steve and I went to spend the evening with friends to ring in a new year for one of them. It was her birthday. Well, she was late because her boyfriend was let. While we waited for her we decided to have some hot wings. The first time we ate there the hot wings were delicious. Tonight the chicken wasn't done and the sauce tasted terrible. Decided to order some chips and salsa for Steve and chips and cheese for myself. Took 1/2 hr. for them to bring them out and they didn't even warm the cheese. Gave them back and told her what she could do with them. She gave me a bad look, oh well. The bill was outrageous, she wouldn't cash a check and we won't be eating there again. Birthday girl never showed up and we finally left. We met her at the Night/Day store where we stopped to get me a diet coke. She really looked nice, different, but nice. She had on a dress instead of bluejeans. She is a member of our dart team, lousy darter but a wonderful person, a fun person.

Toad: First, let me apologize. Your e-mail got lost in my income tax. Your tiredness may be a result of malnutrition from too drastic a cut back of foods or a vitamin deficiency. We obtain our energy as a result of insulin transporting glucose from our blood into our cells. We diabetics while fighting to reduce our BG level can do many things to upset the normal balance of nutrients in our bodies. There are too many things that can cause your tiredness. I personally get tired and sleepy when my BG's reach their highs after meals. To me this indicates that I am headed to my doctor to check on the need for a medication. It appears that my insulin output is slacking of some as my highs are growing while my fasting is staying the same with closely regulated nutrient intake. I can't blame this on stress because my wife does the worrying in the family. The foods you listed and the preparation of them is satisfactory. The question is, are you getting enough nutrients and the balance you need to provide you with the energy you require. If you can e-mail me more specific detail about potrion size, and each food for each meal, I will review it for you. Do not avoid breakfast as you tear down muscle when your liver store of glycogen is depleted. You may just be weak from malnutrition. Drastic weight loss is not recommended. 1-2 pounds per week is a maximum after the first weeks water loss. Again, I am sorry that you had to compete with Big Brother as per Marc. Gordo

This is a tuff topic. My husband and I wanted children and decided not to have them. Understand when I had to make the decision, there was not even blood testing machine for the home. You had to rent them during pregancy. It makes me sound old but things have advanced greatly in the last 15-20 years. I felt I would not live long enough to raise them. My husband did not want to raise them alone. Times have changed and I would have them if I could make a decision today. My brother had great health and died at 42 of cancer. He left behind a 6 year old. He loved her so much. Not his plan but has a way of dealing some bad cards. We all think we are going to die from the D. What if cancer comes or an accident? We really should try to think of all the great things a child can bring to our lives. We punish ourselves with all the things that might happen. Just think, everything might be just fine. I hope you all can work it out as a couple and stay together. -------Toad, I am so sorry to hear this broke you up, there is some one out there for you that will understan. I understand Marc's problem about not being able to get insurance and also not wanting to pass diabete's on to his children. BUT, and it's a big but, no one in my family has ever had diabetes and I have it anyway. As most here on the board knows I've been doing family history research and 95% of the death certificates I've been able to get has named cancer, of one sort or another, as the cause. If my family had decided not to have children because they didn't want to pass the cancer on I wouldn't be here. The other side of the family died from heart attacks at a very old age. Any way you look at it you don't know what you may pass on to your children or your grandchildren. Last time I went to the doctors he told me that diabetes isn't necesserily genetic. That it is caused from a virus of the pancreas, spelling is terrible today. Me?, I don't know. I just know that my children and grandchildren have made my life so full and enjoyable that I wouldn't change a thing about my past. It's true that I wish I didn't have diabetes because I, like Mark fear that it will pass on to my children and grandchildren, but not to have had them? Marc, I don't know how old you are or anything about you and your life style except for what I read here. Please don't take offense at anything I say here because this is only my thoughts and feelings. It's just that my children have helped me get thru so much. My 2nd husband died at the age of 45 and left me with 8 children still at home and no life insurance but I made it. It wasn't easy but I did it. The youngest was only 6 yrs. old at the time. She is now, I think she's 27, and just had her 1st child after being told that she would never have any because of cancer that she had as a teenager. Believe me Mark, that whatever you decide to do will work out for you and your wife. If, you want children go for it, there are no guarantees in this life. There is hope, joy and despair and children can give you all three. My best to everyone on this board and I mean that sincerely.

I appreciate your honesty. You sound like you were dead set against children. I actually want children, but know I have these obstacles to take care of. I do think therapy can get me to face my fears, and I am working on a financial plan that would allow her security. So I guess where I am at is the "working it out" phase, but I do see your position and think it is understandable that if two people want very different things that splitting is the right thing to do. Can I ask you this, did you want children at all or did you not want children because of the potential for diabetic disaster? You see the other side of my situation is I took a proactive approach by going on the pump, and do have the potential to get many years out of life without additional problems, that is the "logical" side of this. My biggest problem is finding a way to get both sides together in my head. And I guess children are the grand prize if I do.

My wife and I were in exactly the same place you are on having children....we went through much counseling and all it really came down to is weather to get the divorce now or go through years of hell until we both saw reality. If your wife does indeed want children nothing will replace her drive to have them...you are most understanding of the realities of your disease and all the financial and other drawbacks....My wife and I divorced over this and I have never been sorry...she has remarried and is on the way to the children she wants and I am alone but without the unending burden of seeing them in the poorhouse because of my disease....if you refuse to have children the bitterness will at some point make your life miserable ... this is why so many disable people find themselves divorced and broke...so, better to get it over now while it is just you and your wife involved.......

Marc,....that's very well put. What I didn't talk about was the opinion of the wife in these cases. That is the other 50% of the decision. Now if the wife REALLY want the children,....that weighs very heavy in the weighscale. The trouble is, that if things go wrong and she was in favor and the husband not.....will she blame herself for it. So when you go for it it has to be a joined yes. Like you say with the medical development going so fast even if diabetes strikes them they will be in a much better position then we ever were. Your other concerns are ligitimate also, you would have to work on that or take a chance. I have heared about cases where husband and wife would break up over that. That's not good at all. JOHN.

On Fri Mar 30 15:10:16 2001 Marc W (sdlightningbolts55@yahoo.com) said:
John.... Here is my take on children. I don't fear passing on diabetes to them because I believe that by then there will be a cure or something close to it. My fear is this, that I get hit with some serious complication, one I may not live through. I cannot get life insurance, trust me I have tried. So I fear leaving my wife with the responsibilty of being a single parent without the financial ability. I fear leaving a small child without a father. Now I will say this does not mean no children, it means I need to work this out with a good therapist, and get some serious support from Julie. I will tell you she has yet to understand, she gets defensive and says why bother with therapy you have your mind made up. This isn't my mind made up, it's just my fears. I watched my mother die when I was in my 20's, I just can't shake the feeling of my young son or daughter going through that. This is the kind of thing I think of now that never ever crossed my mind before the Retinopathy. But it did give me a wake up call to the fact I am not immune, and does make me think of the future with a realistic view, although people do accuse me of using it as an excuse. Bottom line, I think I would be a great father, but I would be an irresponsible one if I did it without working out my fears AND placing my wife in a financial situation she would be able to raise our child without me. Well that is about it for that, just thought I would put that out there and see if there are people my age with the same thoughts. I think generationally it has changed and the future looks better for children in relation to the disease itself. ..... Marc

It is a very interesting and important subject to which Marc referred. The question is, does one want to have children when it is known that the diabetes problems can be passed on to them..... When we had our two boys, in 1955 and 1957, it was just before it became clear that I had diabetes. (1960) I worried considerably about the possibility that they also may become diabetic. As it worked out, sofar, it has shown that they were not affected by it. Even our 6 grandchildren do not, sofar, show any signs. Except my granddaughter who has been showing signs of possibly having lupus which may have some connection, who knows for sure? (age 18) Had I known I was diabetic before they were manufactured, would we have not had them? I suppose under the present circumstances I have to say that it would have been a mistake not having them. If they would have been affected by diabetes when I would have had it before going for having children and therefore, knowing that it was possible, I would have blamed myself for doing so. It is therefore a difficult question to answer as you can see from my experience. If I was faced with the situation knowing I had it, we probably would not have gone for it. But it remains a difficult question to answer. One could try it with one child first, but sometimes it doesn't show til much later. What to do????? JOHN V.

I have told both her and her 8 year old brother all about me and when they should call 911 and what to say and I have showed them where my medication is so the rescue squad or attendents need to know. They know who my doctor is and what hospital I go to. When I had my cataract removed and couldn't drive for awhile, she just said that Grampa or her Mom or Aunt Cathy would take me. MISTY.... I am going to that concert tonight with the back stage passes. I am excited and nervous, that isn't an atmosphere I have been in since I got hit with the vision stuff. Maybe I will "bump" into someone famous, literally!....

Cadsulfide... I am confused here. Tell me this, why would they NOT remove the cataract? It is a very simple proceedure that would clear up that portion of your problem. Having been in your shoes, I suspect there are additional problems. Help fill in those blanks and I will do what I can. We can talk in detail in e-mail if you wish. I had laser, Vitrectomy and cataract surgery so maybe I am closer to the "twin" the other Mark brought up. I talk about your type of problem all the time with my wife, she wants kids and I am racked with "what if". I have vision, although not good and partial tear of the retina, in my "good eye". So your situation is why I hesitate on children. As I said, I don't think I know your whole situation so e-mail me or post here and I will tell you my opinion. Cataract only is nothing to put off though if that is your only visual problem in that eye. Take care......Marc W

I believe that every diabetic has a "twin" and that yours is out here somewhere. This site will tell you that you are not alone in what your facing. I am not that twin but maybe a distant relative. Your question on the cataract can only be answered by you. The advice you may get here would be seem more toward the things that we know from experience that could help aleviate or prevent complications. Since you are already past that door we can offer encouragement to you. I have had surgery on one eye but not with the problem of it being the last eye working. I would not settle for just two opinions on this. I would want the best regional or countrywide doctors opinion before I decide such a big problem. But ask yourself if I don't do anything what happens to my remaining eyesight. As for the 5 year old, they will love you just as much no matter what you decide or what happens. I don't think they would understand it in any great detail but instead would listen to the tone of your explaination to give them the clue how to react. If your in control of your tone, they know you are handling the 'whatever' it is your telling them about. Then hug each other. Good luck and maybe your "twin" diabetic condition will read this and respond with how they have handled it.

Hello, to all. I am "New" to this. So, Please excuse ANY mistakes that I make. I have been a Diabetic for way too long. And yes, I have many complacations too. But, this one has presented a "Huge" problem. I am just asking for some thoughts. I only have sight in one eye. I have a cataract on the "Good" eye. I cannot pass a Driving test because of the cateract. I have to depend on other people for rides. This not only poses a problem for me but, how do I explain this to my 5yr old? Also, "Do I have the cateract removal and posssibley loose All sight"? Each Doctor I have been to seems to have a "Different" opinion on this issue. Thank You, Cadsulfide Please, I do not mean to sound like a "Whinner" but, I would like to hear your opinions on this next "Twist" that being a Diabetic hhas thrown at me.

JUST AN FYI FOR ALL DIABETICS CURRENTLY ON INSULIN THERAPY, A NEW LONG ACTING INSULIN WILL BE AVAILABLE IN MAY. THIS APPARENTLY IS A VERY WELCOMED ADDITION TO THE INSULIN MARKET ACCORDING TO MANY ENDOCRINOLOGISTS. THE NAME IS LANTUS(INSULIN GLARGINE) AND IS A TRUE 24 HR DOSE TAKEN AT NIGHT. THIS MAY BE NICE FOR PEOPLE ON 2 DOSES OF NPH OR NOT CONTROLLED ON THEIR CURRENT THERAPY. I BELIEVE THIS CAN BE TAKEN WITH ORAL AGENTS AS WELL.

Ok, someone made a remark to me about CB, by the time I read the rest of the posts I forget what it said, I do know it was negative though. CB helped me a lot on this message board and through e-mail when I was going to the fitness center. I finally stopped going to the fitness center because the more I did and the more I enjoyed it the more the trainers told me to slow down and back off. I was really getting into the aerobics, the weight machines and at least an hour on the treadmill sometimes longer. If it hadn't be for CB and others on the board I wouldn't have lasted as long as I did. I haven't been to the fitness center for over a year now. So say what you want about CB but he will give encouragement to anyone that needs or wants it either here or in e-mail. KEEP IT UP CB I love Gordo for all his nutritional advice which most of it I didn't follow but he couldn't make me follow his advice but he offered it anyway and he helped many, many people. He even offered to help my youngest brother who was told that MAYBE he was diabetic. Lucky him he wasn't, but the offer of help was there. He personally e-mailed him because I asked him to. Thats a true friend. LOVE YA GORDO Yesterday I took a bad fall, don't know what happened. According to the doctor I blacked out for just a split second and be the time I hit the ground I had come around. That is the 2nd time I've had that happened and was told the same thing the 1st time. I for one think it's bull. I hit the ground hard enough that I wasn't able to get up for several minutes and no one was around to help me. I fell on my right arm, my dart throwing arm, and landed hard on my right side brusing not only my arm but also my ribs. I was really worried that I broke my arm and cracked a rib or two. Turned out was all I did was get bruised up but was unable to throw darts last night. Probably good thing for the team. After all we did get 14 points. Now we're back in last place. Needless to say I was terrible last night and bitched about anything and everything. Thankfully everyone knows how I am and didn't get upset with me. By the end of the evening they all had me laughing along with them. WHY CAN'T IT BE THAT WAY HERE? This morning I received a phone call from my youngest daughter, the one that had the baby right after Christmas. He weighs 16 lbs now at the age of 3 months. The reason she called is because she is scared. She goes into the hospital tomorrow for tests. They believe she may have colon cancer. She fought vaginal cancer for several years and finally beat it and now this. She knows how heavy cancer runs in our family. I told her to try not worrying because that won't help at all but to remember that even though 95% of our relatives died of cancer they still lived to a ripe old age. Most all of them were in there late 80's or early 90's. She will call me in a few days with the test results. My family history research is coming right along. I have started a new site for it and I really like it. I can do just about anything I want to do on it. It's not limited like most of them. Because of that I put the web site for SEIDA on there too. That's our darting association. Well, enough for today. I just want everyone here, especially all my friends from before that I'm still alive and kicking and getting ready to fix dinner for husband Steve. I love everyone of you for all the hope, friendship and encouragement I've received over the years and hope to continue to receive from all of you.

Bambi: I think in most, but not all, diabetics, stress elevates the blood glucose level. From the thousands of posts I have read and people I have talked to, this is the case. This can be emotional stress, physical stress and stress to your immune system. This is the unique side of the nervous system. I believe that stress has a multiple effect on many diabetics. While it is definitely affecting our nervous system, many of us are not as aggressive in the management of our diabetic control under stress as we are without its influence. Various stressful incidents affect each of us somewhat different. Some can't sleep, some indulge in eating or drinking what we shouldn't, some get headaches, some have ulcers, some are very nervous, it all depends on the individual. We also have to try to factor in the effect of the medications we are currently taking and what they do to our interrelated body systems. If our kidneys are stressed by diabetic complications, what effect does that have on our endocrine system that has so much to do with our digestive, circulatory, lymphatic, pulmonary, cardiovascular, reproductive, urinary, and nervous systems. That leaves the Muscular, integumentary, and skeletal systems that also could be affected. Our bodies are very complex when everything is working correctly, but wow, look at the mess when it isn't working correctly, especially with extra stress. To () 3-28, 16:48: Yes, including you. Herb-- Great post. This board means a lot to most of the people that post here, CB, Gordo, MarcW, Jim, Faith, Misty, Ruth, Anita,JohnV, Bambi, and Vinny, just to name a few. I respect all of them and everyone of them have helped me in some way in the past 4 years that I have been here, with the exception of when it was down, and then some of us found each other on other boards. We have all got to stick together and stay with being here. Don't let the trouble makers get the best of us.--As for JohnV telling me "not to get to skinny as I might not look good", I know he was joking and that he is proud of my accomplishment no mater what it is. He knows what I have been through. CB knows some of my past medical problems as do all the rest here and shows encouragment in what I try to do, even the short time on the treadmill, he was proud of me for trying. I admire him for his weight lifting and squatting. That is his way of keeping fit. Gordo has sent me much information on nutrition that has been very helpful and I still read it. If you have a question about nutrition, he is the man to ask and he is always willing to help. I admire him for the way that he has his diabetes under control, and is not letting it control him. Now for my dear MarcW. We have shared a lot on the board and through e-mail. He has set me straight a few times, and is always there with good words, and yes, sometime harsh words, but I don't take it as trying to cause trouble. If you want to know about eye problems, he is the man to ask. He and Faith talked long about the pump. I learned a lot from their conversations. I love to here about the daily routine of everyone and what makes them happy and what makes them sad and how we can be of help to each other. So lets stick together and forget about the ones that don't understand our family!!! Didn't mean to get carried away.

I followed the Food Plan faithfully and found it very easy and didn't have to make any special meals for myself. Ate what I fixed for my husband. Last night was my first meeting since joining and WOW!! a 6, YES, a SIX pound weight loss. Having spent hundreds of dollars over the years to lose weight, never having any luck, I think I have found the program that is going to help me. I have lowered my daily insulin already, have more energy, the neuropathy in my feet is better, and my BS's have been under control, the first time in all the years that I have been taking insulin,10 years. To Misty: Condolences on your loss. To Joe: Thanks bro! I guess Gayle couldn't handle the ABB boards. What she calls "self-absorption" is focus. Middle aged? So what? Mr. Universe wannabe? No, but a sood squatter, bencher. and deadlifter? You bet! It is indeed a compliment to call me "Freak." That puts me in good company. thanks again SQUATFREAK

To Gayle: I don't normally post, I just lurk to see what's happening but this really bothered me....In a post below your wrote CB: Try dropping one of those weights on your fat head - might not do much for you - but it would make me feel great! You are a first class idiot. Then you also wrote It's not just what CB said in his last post - it's CB himself! For crying out loud, how many times must he preach about lifting?? Does he not realize that most of us a NOT impressed. Why must he go on and on and on.....great, fine, lift all you want - cars, trains, planes - so what. Just shut up about it. He is nothing but a self-absorbed, middle-aged, Mr. Universe wannabe. At least he's got the "freak" part right. Class...as in NONE!!! What is up with the attitude? Are you always this negative? So CB posts about lifting but you know what, if you read the posts that go on here daily, then you'll see that certain people post about the same stuff sooner or later. Also, are you pissed at CB because he really does have a holier than thou attitude or are you pissed because CB is actually not letting diabetes etc get in his way and you are unable or unwilling to do so? Would CB dropping a weight on his head make you feel better because it would be one less person with a better attitude and mind set than you and you wouldn't be feeling so inadequte? I have to wonder about your posts because really, if you didn't care about CBs lifting or weren't impressed by what he had to say then it really shouldn't have bothered you. Oh well...whatever...I guess I won't be coming around too much after that display...I might get picked on for something I do! Later folks

John V.: I am sorry that I offended you. It was not intended that way. I have much respect and admiration for all mentioned in my post. I did not say that I disliked hearing about your daily needles. I meant that I didn't want them meaning that I was going to try to control or manage my diabetes so that I could postpone those complications as long as possible. I still include that May 24, year unknown, testimonial of yours with my informational e-mail to newbees and anyone else interested. I have drawn fire for being to blunt and scaring the newbees. I think they each need something to impress on them the seriousness of this disease and its complications I am sure that is what you also try to do in some of your posts, as do many others. Some of us vent when we need to vent while some of us ramble about things that relax us and decrease our stress level. All of this and much more is directly related to helping diabetics. Marc's comments about his experiences with his new pump were very timely. He didn't quit because of it, but found out what was the problem and proceeded to do something about it. The diabetic must continually learn and adapt to new information. I see in the future that the pump will come with its own computer and continuous reading glucose monitor for maximum glucose control automatically. Again, John, I did not mean to single you out derogatorially but only because I have deep respect for each of you and for your advice. Gordo (today, most of my fat is obviously between my ears).

Misty - Marc W: I don't know exactly how to say this. I felt so sorry for myself the last 2 years because of my severly limited eyesight. I now feel guilty for being so self absorbed and selfish as to bellieve that my problem was so severe. All the while I had the hope of seeing again, which I am now doing. In fact I am about to drive Jodi crazy reading signs and billboards to her. It's exciting if you haven't seen them for 2 years. But when I consider the two of you and your lack of hope that you will ever see better again it makes me feel guilty for being so childish about my good luck. Beleive me when I say that from this day forward not a day will go by that I won't think of the 2 of you and pray for you and your welfare. Herb (Bear)
