This is great...I am getting tired of the insulin pump, and although I have
tried Lantus, it only works for 18 hours for me, not 24. They are making very
good advances for us...hopefully IDDM will be manageable for us soon. I am a
"brittle" diabetic, have had IDDM for 10 years now. Thanks again! P.S. Zoie:

June 17th from Reuters: SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters Health) - Diabetics may
eventually be able to throw away their syringes in favor of newer methods of
taking their insulin, researchers reported here Saturday at the American
Diabetes Association's annual meeting. Around one in five of the 17 million
diabetics in the United States rely on insulin injections to control their
disease, which is caused by the inability to produce or process the hormone
insulin. Researchers at the meeting reported on a variety of alternatives for
insulin delivery, including inhalers, implantable pumps, patches, pills and oral
sprays. Dr. Jay Skyler, a past president of the association and a professor of
medicine, pediatrics and psychology at the University of Miami, Florida,
reviewed the progress being made in developing an inhaled form of insulin. He
reported on results from a 6-month study of Exubera, a dry-powdered form of
insulin delivered as an inhalant and manufactured by Pfizer and Aventis.
Compared with patients relying on traditional injections, an equal percentage of
patients using the inhaler had satisfactory blood glucose control, Skyler
reported. Patients also reported greater satisfaction with the inhalers. "The
long-term safety of inhaled insulin still needs to be established," Skyler said.
"If it is, I think patients would tend to prefer something non-injected." Dr.
Chris Saudek of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, reported on an
experimental implantable insulin pump made by Medtronic that is currently under
review for US Food and Drug Administration ( news - web sites) approval.
Researchers also discussed several other experimental products under early
investigation that are not expected to reach the marketplace for several years,
including: --An adhesive patch being developed by the Altea Development
Corporation that administers insulin through the skin. --An oral insulin pill
under development by Nobex Corporation that is best absorbed when taken 15
minutes before a meal. --A spray by Generex Corporation that would deliver
liquid insulin to the mouth, where it would be absorbed by the mucous membranes
in the cheeks, tongue and throat.
