My husband is from England where they have a national health care service. He moved here to be with me. He works and I work. We are a part of the 40 million americans that work and don't have health insurance, which is not a crime or anything to be ashamed of. He has diabetes which is starting to take its toll on him. Not to try to do everything I can for him would be a crime and something to be ashamed of. He is only 32. Before I meet him I didn't know how serious diabetes was. Now every night I am afraid. Purplerose I admire your courage.

I just want the world to know: On May 27th, I lost my 36 year old brother to juvenile diabetes after 32 years with this disease. I recomend anyone(with extra time or money)to donate what they can. I watched my brother for the last six years suffer through the worst of what the Lord could dish out and my God did he stay strong. If I can prevent just ONE person from going through the hell he did, I will. But I need your help. I don't have much money to donate but in lieu of flowers for his funeral, donations were made to the fondation for juvenile diabetes. Those who don't have the money such as myself can do other things to help. Did you know there is an awareness day of diabetes? Did you know just like with breast cancer and AIDS, there is a ribbon? Please, I beg you, do research. Make the public aware of the killer at hand. Make ribbons, wear them, sell them, do collections among your community or even among friends. I am about to begin myself. All the time I've spent caring for my dying brother I can now spend trying to help someone else. All hope is gone for my hero but there's others who need my help, and yours. What you do today can maybe save your loved one tomorrow. Thanks for your time.

Hi y'all. It's great to be back. It seems like some things never change. This site is just the same as it has always been. I guess there is something to be said for consistency. Beth is continuing to slowly sink. They have increased her morphine from 4 units every 4 hours to 6 units every 4 hours. The Fenegrin (sp) is no longer dealing with the nausea. We have moved Becky from Rick's and Beth's to McAlester with us. She had moved in with them when her doctor required her to quit her job due to the disease. It just became to stressful for her to watch her sister who is in the final stages of the same disease she is in the beginning stages with. The question was contantly on her mind "How long will it be before I am where Beth is now?" We took a few days in May and went to the cabin on the lake. Where I taught the Tulsa grand kids to fish for channel cat with stink bait. Gregory, the 4 year old outfished everybody including grandpa. I had to create some excitement while we were there. I tried to come down a steep hill on a gravel road with my electric wheel chair. I got to going to fast and hit a bump or a rock and my hand came off the joystick control which sets the brakes. I had a brief rodeo. Needless to say my ride lasted less than 8 seconds. I landed on my knees and fore arms in the crushed rock gravel of the road. I laid there for a few seconds waiting for the chair to come on over on top of me but it tipped back up right. This was early in May and Jodi is still doctoring my knees and arms. We all know how slowly diabetics heal. We arrived home to find the computer not working. I am a computer user not a technician of any kind. Greg was to tied up to come see about it and it was after Becky came that we began to examine it to see what the trouble was. My 'puter had it's first virus ever. I had failed to keep my virus program updated and it was an old-old one, Penicillin something or other. We ordered a copy of McAfee Viruscan and Becky began purging everything. We did not lose everything thanks to the way Greg had partitioned the hard drive according to Becky. All we totally lost was our E-mail files and my E-mail address book. Becky says that this was where the virus entered the 'puter. I hope that all of you that I previously communicated with occasionaly on E-mail will resend me your addy. My blood sugars have been all over the map. When my BS gets real high due to stress (Which it has recently) and is not supported by food when it comes down it comes crashing down into the forties. I have come from near 300 to 40 in just a matter of minutes at times. We have had another very stressful incident in our lives recently that I am not quite ready to share with you guys as of yet. I am not going to go back and read all the back posts to catch up due to all the garbage that I would have to read in order to catch up on you guys. So please let me know what is happening in your lives either here or by E-mail. THANKS!!! Herb and Jodi

We pay for insulin and all the other stuff but I''m not sure how we will pay for the laser treatment. If anyone knows of any programs or health support please let me know.

Kim and Sam: The AP's will attack for this, so double check what is said here with your doc or CDE. It is true that Insulin is a fat storing hormone. I am seeing that first hand. There are a couple of other factors worth considering. First of all, there is metabolism rate. Aerobics, of course can speed up metabolism, as can sufficient protein intake-not high, but sufficient to maintain lean mass. Lean mass helps control bodyfat percentage. Also, there is the Basal Metabolism Rate, the calories your body needs when doing nothing. The trick is, lower bodyfat percentage while preventing lean tissue breakdown. Minor carb/fat reduction combined with sensible exercise will often do the trick. Another category is genetic. Metabolism rate is often set genetically. The good thing is, it can be changed for the better! I hope this helps. I got this info from sources knowledgable in sports nutrition.

Well, AP, you DON'T know! Anyone with a brain knows that sugar is best avoided by diabetics except in hypoglycemic incidents! I took issue with Instant Breakfast because it is just sugar, empty calories. A glass of milk would be better. 16 oz. milk has 24 gms carbs and 16 gms good protein, No fat if nonfat is chosen. Of course, milk sugar is a simple carb. For a quick breakfast, one could hard boil 5 eggs and eat 4 whites with one whole egg. Take an apple and one or two slices whole wheat toast and you are good to go! I suggested a product I use regularly to help the gastroparesis situation, and I get attacked! If you are the same AP who posted Instant Breakfast, it wasn't a very good suggestion for the reason above. I am aware of products that many here are unaware of that CAN be used safely. No, I do not know it all! That is why I am open to learning. It seems some people here are not. BTW, the post above should really get you going!

Yes, I got the hint, but I ignored it. This is sad. Most of my attackers know nothing about what they write. So, why pay any attention to them. It is known, for example, that Metr-x has been used in hospitals to prevent body wasting in people who are serious ill, but not by the AP attackers. I care, that is why I post.

Hey everybody! Fair is fair! All I was doing was bringing up a low sugar sub for instant breakfast. There are, of course, others. I know well that insulin is a fat storing hormone which has its effects on bodyfat percentage. At the same time, there are safe, healthy ways of minimizing that. I get attacked for THIS again? OK, load up on processed fat and sugar, you who criticize. Burn out on aerobics and wonder why the lean goes and the fat remains. Deny all you want; it is still DIET. Sheesh! This is getting old.

Kim...insulin is a fat storing hormone. Most of us gain weight if diabetic, unless we don't eat, are pining, or totally regimented & live on sticks & twigs. That still doesn't help, but part of it has to do with the body's fat storage system. It's life...good luck.
