thanks - Jim - and others who answered my questions on neuropathy. I really appreciate your input. I have tried Amitriptyline (Elavil) and did not have any relief. I will certainly talk to my MD about Neurontin. Altho - what about side effects. That is a pretty powerful drug with some nasty Side Effects. I've worked with a lot of Patients/clients on Neurontin and they can get rather lathargic. (I'm a nurse in the mental health field) Also - I don't have much pain. Just the numbness. It drives me crazy sometimes.

yes, I spelled it wrong..I am very visully impaired and use a program called VocalEyes which quit on me yesterday,,so I was winging it,,,,amitriptyline is a very mild anti depressent and they found it works well in foot pain caused by neurophacy ...it got me off the oyycodene and Tylenol..which is good..

Hi J, the anamosity is mostly caused by some of the people on here that are fundamental religionists posting their religious ranting on what is a diabetic chat. Anyway, many of us have the neurophacy and use various drugs and treatments...I found that Amatripline works for me in the evening so I can sleep....I am sure some of the others on here will send you some suggestions..

As far as the Neuropathy, I used to have it real bad in my hands, feet, legs etc, but once I got my diabetes under better control, it reversed out of everywhere but my feet. They're toast and will never be better until a cure is found. My hands are still real cold most of the time, but the numbness and pain are nearly gone. The only things I've found to treat my feet and get some relief are clean, dry, white cotton socks to bed, as well as 1200-1800mg of Neurontin (Gabapentin) an hour before bed. If you smoke, STOP. Smoking decreases blood flow anyway, but in diabetics who have Neuropathy, it makes things even worse. If I can answer any more of your questions, I will be happy to help. Jim

I spoke to a friend of mine who was a diabetic and since has had a pancreas transplant six years ago, he does not take Insulin but does take a handfull of tablets each day. So now I am trying to get my name down for one of these transplants, but I also do beleive that the way forward is stem cell research, I know there are some people out there that do not agree, but if this the only wat to get a cure then I am all for it. Marc, Your welcome! I don't know a lot about Lupus, but I know that there are two kinds. One attacks the inside, and one the skin. The one internally is the worse. A former secretary of my husbands died of that a couple of years ago. I THINK?? that if you have ever had shingles you are very likley to develope Lupus. I don't know that for sure, but I believe my sister-in-law told me that in regards to my neice. She had shingles when she was a teenager. They say shingles is tied to one having Chicken Pox as a child. So, IF all the above is true, it appears they are all connected. Whatever, it is not a pleasent experience. As before, you and your family are in my thoughts.

I understand there is a serious kind,SLE,but then,my sister has had so many tests,and you know that the doctors have told her this:she may have Lupus,but they're not really sure. It is made more complex by the fact that my sister who is not well,whether it's Lupus,or something simular,and she refuses to involve either my mother or I,for fear that we won't be able to handle it emotionally. So she only tells us she is feeling great,which we are aware of is not exactly the truth. She is often angry,overworked,and since a serious allergic reaction in the hospital to Cipro years ago,(she got toxic shock) her nervous system has never been the same. Being a diabetic,I know what asthma can do to one's diabetes. I do know and advise anyone taking any asthmatic medication or puffers,that according to my GP,some of them,like Advair 250(Which I've been using for my asthma) or this newer asthma drug,Singular,can affect blood pressure and blood sugars. This is now what's happening to me. I feel deeply for my sister and her Lupus,but if she won't level with my mother or I,then,what to do? We're trying to help her. All we know is she had a bunch of tests,most came back negative,except there is some sort of spot on her liver. She has some sort of dental swelling that according to her doctor,gives indication of her having Lupus,but with so many constant tests,there doesn't seem to be an answer. I think there is a lesser form of Lupus,Skin type,it is made more complex by her blood clot,which all of her + our doctors tell us is 90 per cent due to Lupus. We're hoping the blood clot will in time disolve from her arm. I didn't mean to offend or get angry at anyone on here,simply dealing with diabetes,lack of sleep due to asthma,and my sister's Lupus,makes things rather stressed. Thanks again,Faith. Marc.
