controversal, in that it is xenotransplantation, animal to man! The thing that
gets me, as I've stated before, about the concerns regarding animal to man is
the fact we have been using beef and pork insulin, or use too, for years. What
was so wrong w/that. And with this procedure of implanting encapsulated islets
is just that, they are encapsulated. I haven't seen much about it lately, so I
don't know where the research is at this time.

have a stack of papers to read regarding immunosuppression therapy and the
advances that have been made. The big thing right now is a glucocorticoid
(steroid)- free immunosuppressive regimen. It's my understanding that the
anti-rejection drugs are so much more sophisticated today than they were 10
years ago - tho' there are still significant risks associated with the drugs.
The risk I've seen mentioned most often is the increased risk of cancer. Not to

Seriously, as soon as I know more, I'd be happy to share it with you (all). I
did talk to a nurse yesterday who told me that she knows of kidney transplant
patients who have been weaned off their anti-rejection drugs 5 years post
transplant. I'm not calling her a liar, but I'm very skeptical of her comment.
Don't we have some kidney transplant patients here who can address this issue
far better than I? From what I've read, most of the patients receiving the
transplant have serious complications from diabetes. I'm hoping I'm not
considered "too" healthy to transplant. I'm confused how patients with vascular
complications do as compared to those without. Since the cells are infused
through the hepatic vein, doesn't it make better sense to have good vascular
quality? The woman who received her transplant on the 8th (37 years old) was
riddled with complications - -I'm wondering what her follow-up will be like and
if she will see an improvement in her vision, etc. Thanks so much for your
interest - I hope I can provide some viable and helpful information as I go
through the selection process. Oh, and Faith, I don't know a thing about the pig
islet cell process, sorry.

study coordinator and the principal investigator. I wish it was as easy as
simply volunteering! The actual patient population that will receive the
transplant is very small - and there are all kinds of criteria that the patient
has to meet. A woman from Cincinnati received her transplant on April 8th and
has been deemed "cured". I'm hoping to get to talk to her in person in the
coming days. My theory is that, at the very least, even if I don't get assigned
to the protocol, I'll have gained a ton of knowledge I never would have had if I
were not a candidate! I have a ton of literature to read and it is sometimes
daunting and overwhelming - especially the risk:benefit ratio. But, this is
something I've been hoping for for over 20 years and I'm thrilled to be right in
the middle of it!
