Jodi and I
returned to McAlester last night after a week in OKC. Things are about the same
with Beth and Becky. But I'm doing my best to get a handle on it and am
determined not to get as down as I have been recently. All of my doctors
appointments went extremely well. We had full lab tests run as we do once a
year. My HBA1C (I think that is the proper designation) was 5.8 which seemed to
please all 3 doctors especially the Opthamologist. He said that he did not think
he had another patient who ran under 6. My Cholesterol and related numbers was
actually low. I told all 3 doctors that it should be if all the food police
would let you have is straw and cardboard to eat. Their response was that I
shuld just shut up and listen to the food police since it seemed to be working
extremely well. The only area of slight concern was a low level of bacteria in
my kidneys. So I am going back in May to have a ultra sound of the bladder for
post residual of the bladder. We are going to meet as many of our family as can
make it in Muskogee this weekend for the Azaela Festival at Honor Heights Park.
They have acres and acres of Azaelas which should be in full bloom. Faith, don't
let he/she/they/it get you down. I remember what you said and you have always
supported islet transplant. Although I must say that at the present time it
doesn't seem like a profitable trade off for a diabetic to "possibly" eliminate
the need for finger pricks and insulin shots and pick up the need to take
transplant anti rejection drugs for life, most of which have extremely strong
side effects. Maybe it will become more viable in the future. Jim, thank you for
asking about the family. The situation has not really changed any. I have just
made up my mind that I'm not going to let it get me down like it did the last
few weeks. Y'all keep good control and maintain good health. Herb (Bear)

Diabetic freed from insulin New
procedure pioneered here
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Cindy Starr, Post staff reporter Insulin shots and pin pricks are a thing of
the past for Lois Vicars, a 37-year-old Loveland resident and diabetic, because
of an islet transplant received at University Hospital in Cincinnati earlier
this month. How it works Islet transplantation involves the injection of islet
cells, which produce insulin, from a donor's pancreas into a recipient's liver.
Islets are first isolated from the pancreas, then purified and injected into the
recipient through a small abdominal vein. Islet transplantion requires a
one-hour operation, a 2-inch abdominal incision and a short hospital stay.
Afterwards, patients must take a combination of potent anti-rejection drugs for
life. Ms. Vicars, a bookkeeper, is one of only five people with diabetes
worldwide to be freed from insulin therapy after receiving a transplant from a
single donor. The procedure is being performed at five sites in the United
States. Canadian physicians are performing islet transplants with cells from two
donors. The new procedure, which University began performing in November, is
expected to bring major lifestyle changes for Type I diabetics who are
accustomed to several painful insulin injections and finger sticks each day to
check their blood glucose. The procedure especially offers hope to those
afflicted with an extreme and life-threatening difficulty in regulating blood
sugar. Diabetes affects 16 million Americans and is the fourth leading cause of
death in the United States. Of the 15 patients who have under gone islet
transplantation at University, 14 saw a significant decrease in the need for
insulin therapy. Only Ms. Vicars was freed of it. ''A lot had to do with the
quality of the organ,'' said Dr. Horacio Rilo, director of cellular
transplantation at the hospital. ''And then the years of experience - I've been
doing this more than 12 years. I've improved the techniques.'' Rilo said the
number of patients who could be helped by the procedure is limited only by the
availability of organs. Of the islet transplants performed at University, four
involved organ donors, and 11 involved the transplantation of islets from
patients' own pancreases, which were removed because of disease. University
physicians are looking beyond islet transplantation to the possibility of
identifying stem cells in the donor pancreas and to the possibility of
extracting duct cells from the patient's own pancreas, then causing them to
differentiate into healthy islet cells. Of the 15 patients who have under gone

As for attacks on DE's, my post had none. I don't care anymore...I will share up
to date info and leave it to the adults here to check it out with their
team.

16:54 Good Post ! what you read before
is nothing more than CB's daily attack on the medical/professional /DE
people...held up by his usual vague references ie, A department in a Major
University....must be the same one that awarded him his Masters Degree which
qualified him to move boxes in a warehouse.

I have no idea
whether the Food Guide causes obesity but I am convinced that it has a purpose.
It is a very good learning tool for people with little or no concepts of food
requirements. It is simple. That to me is its best feature. A very young child
can be taught how to use the food guide and although they often have very little
input into the food available in their household it helps them. They often can
access fruits and vegetables if they are taught that they are important in their
diet. Many times they will eat them although not to enjoy them but because they
have learned their importance to their bodies. It is a simple tool that to a
degree will and can be effective as a starting point. To use it as the basis for
a lifelong healthy diet is not really in my opinion what it was designed for. I
can see that it is a stepping stone to start establishing HEALTHIER eating
habits and a beginning awareness of the food groups we eat.

The problem with obisity is that most
people eat whatever they want. How much they want, and are lazy as hell. They
need to turn off the tv, get off the couch and do something. Just a little walk,
if they can't walk they should at least do arm circles, or bend over and try to
touch their toes. The food pyramid is a joke. I don't believe they will ever get
the diet thing correct. What works for some won't work for others.

Gordo: Thanks for your cautionary
statement. I take a potent vitamin high in beta carotene and Vitamin A. Second,
I do not mean a 100% juice diet. Third, your suggestion of adding a fat is good.
(flaxseed oil?) BTW, my sarcastic tone was for the benefit of the APs who find
nothing better than to attack. Seriously, for most people the RDA is not enough.
A question here: Would you agree that the food pyramid is a major cause of
obesity? A department in a major university has said as much!!!
