Hello everyone. Chris- I'm not sure if you're really asking for help after reading your unique email address, so in case you are, I'll try to answer part of your question. As I do not and never have taken illegal drugs, I'll try to answer the alcohol question. Alcohol should be used only in moderation (in my opinion) if a person is healthy, and very very carefully or not at all if you have any health problems. Where the danger lies with a diabetic, is that alcohol will raise your blood sugar INITIALLY. Due to toxifying the liver and basically slowing it down the liver after a while stops dumping glucose, or as much into the bloodstream. For almost the whole day after getting intoxocated, the liver is trying to "revive" itself and doesn't release much glucose. When you're taking oral meds for your diabetes, and don't check your levels very often, you can have some pretty severe lows. Often people fight like crazy to keep their blood sugar up the next day. I would think a hypoglycemic patient would have even a harder time after a night of indulgence in the spirits. This is at least the way I understand it. If I'm wrong on any part of this, I'm sure I'll be corrected, or in some cases mocked or called names. So be it. Have a good day everyone. Jim

Faith -- I share your problem with the larger out of shape brain. I dissolve my pill in water and drink it down, since my brain is pretty large and I'm always afraid I will step on it. I checked with the pharmacist to make sure it was okay to dissolve the pill prior to swallowing it. I tried the chewable brand of pills, but they seemed to give me a pain in the neck. Thanks CB, for the mention about liquid vitamins -- it hadn't ever occurred to me to look for liquid vitamins for adults with hugh out of shape brains. I guess I always assumed they made those only for small children. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mornin' all. boy faith you must have a dainty tiny little girls throat, can't take one vitamin pill? I take 17 pills in one gulp every morning with my sugar free Tang. But then Jodi has said for years that there is nothing about me that is little or small. She never has cut me much slack. Years ago when I got my first pair of tri-focals I was complaining about not being able to see my feet. I made the statement that I had lost my feet. She responded with "Herb, you lost your feet years ago and it had nothing to do with your glasses". We are leaving for the city in the morning. We have to go through Seminole and drop the tax info at the CPA's. We had to file for an extension since we just got one of the W2's yesterday. I have a Cardiologist appointment Thur morning at 10:00 and a Endo and a Opthamologist appointment next Monday. So we will stay in OKC and help with Beth until Monday even though we have not had a cry for help. Beth has always loved this time of year. She has a real green thumb and by now she has usually been working in her flower beds for weeks. Some of the ladies from her church came by yesterday and cleaned out all of her beds and planted a bunch of stuff for her since she can no longer do it. I'll be lurking around the rest of today and will return next week. You guys keep good conrrol and maintain good health. Herb and Jodi

Good afternoon everyone. It's cloudy threatening rain here. We have been having our monsoon season here. The back yard looks like a swimming pool. In July and August we will be praying for rain. One day last week we had 11 inches in one day. It does this here twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. It also looks like we are going to have another year with no Spring where we go directly from Winter to Summer. Last week we had temps in the 20s at night this week they are predicting high 80's during the day. Faith, CB, hang in there guys. Don't let them get to you. There are those of us on here who know both of you and love you for what and who you are. Jim this applies to you as well. Faith, thanks for your kind comments regarding the family. We have always felt that the example we set for them was more important than any preaching that we might be tempted to do. Neither Jodi's or my parents spent a single day in a nursing home even though it was difficult at times. Beth spiked a fever yesterday. It has been 10 days since she completed her last round of IV anti-biotics. Both Jodi and Kris say that this was expected and will happen several more times in the future. We are expecting a call almost any time that will cause us to go to OKC. If I disapear from here that will just mean that the phone rang. My BS has been great for this past week here at home as usual and it will go out of control while we are in OKC. Thanks for listening. Keep good control and maintain good health. Herb and Jodi

Although she didn't go into a nursing home till 4 days before her passing, the last four years, she had been in an assisted living arrangement. That's what my husband and I are considering if one of us ever needs assistance. (Or both!) More power to your family. How is your daughter Beth? She is in my thoughts and prayers. BTW CB, don't waste your time with the local naysayer. He keeps using the term "we" on here, and I know for a fact he's only speaking for himself/herself/its. He can't stand to see anyone share things that work for them. He tries to pretend he is out here to protect others from mis-information. Well, when has he EVER given any good constructive info here. The family farms used to help their older & ill relatives...give them a place to be...but they are becoming a thing of the past, with all the big factory farming coming in, for big profit. Only a few families can do this, and you are lucky to have one. I really enjoy your posts! and good luck!!

Good afternoon everybody. All the flak that I received regarding my going into a nursing home caused me to spend the day yesterday considering whether or not I was imposing my personal feelings on my family to their detriment. I have to accept that my personal feelings regarding nursing homes are not positive. So I spent the day talking with each of my five children and their 4 spouses on the subject. First let me say that we have raised our kids to think for themselves and to not be afraid to express their true feelings. Over the years I have butted heads with all 5 of the kids when they thought I was wrong. In my conversations the first thing that was evident was that this is a subject that the kids have discussed among themselves because they all had virtually the same thing to say. 1. At this point in time they nor I have a vote. The decision is up to their Mother up until the point that they feel like she is incapable of making a rational decision. And right now that decision is NO! 2. When the time comes that she is no longer capable of caring for me full time we will examine the posibility of having some outside caregiver type of help come into the home. 3. When this is no longer practical we will sell or rent the house here in McAlester and one of them will either build on to their house or move to a larger house so we can move in with them. 4. They will only consider a nursing home when I get so bad that it is impossible to care for me at home. They all feel that it is important to set an example for their kids as to the families responsibility to the aged members of the family. I have long been proud of our kids, but never more so than right now. I know that some of you are going to come unglued at the prospect of what I have said here. But, you know what, I don't care. We have always tried to stress the importance of family with our kids and never knew exactly how much they had absorbed or accepted. Now we know, and I am extremely proud. Herb (Bear)

Faith, sorry to hear of the infection after your tooth surgery. I have been helped by a product called "Men's Blend," a multivitamin. The same company makes a "Women's Blend."Of course, I can't say your CDE will approve, but info is available at supernutrition.com. I hardly ever get even a cold after starting the men's blend. I take 2 tabs after meals with a vitamin C capsule, and the immune system seems to resist infection better. I can't guarantee you would experience the same. It might be worth checking it out! Of course ask your CDE and ignore the idiot AP who will post a warning about this. He/she is intelligent of course; vitamins will injure or kill diabetics! Therefore, their diets should be vitamin, mineral, and protein free! Just in passing, I plan to start juicing Monday, spinach, parsely, a carrot, ginger, and lots of garlic! It is an energy dring that is supposed to work well.

JD:a few more comments re:Glucophage Watch: The batteries have to be changed 4-6 months. Aside from the watch giving you a misreading,(if you sweat) though I understand it can detect both high and low sugars, you still must test. At least a few times a day. Also, extreme heat,(hot weather) can cause the watch to either give you a false reading,or break down. I'm not sure what the warranty is on it. You might wish to look for it through the diabetes month magazine, published by "American Diabetes Association". It is called:"Diabetes Forecast". Not only does your GP have to prescribe it for you,and order it,you and your diabetes team have to take some sort of training course to learn how to get the proper use out of it. I think it is worth trying to order.

No,you still have to test your blood. Not as often as without it. The device has several flaws, sometimes,if your sweat,it can give a false reading. Some people have developed allergies to the watch(skin type) From what I've read, the makers of it are trying to improve it. Good luck. Marc Bernstein.
