FOR ALL
PUMPERS: my trainer just called and, in our conversation, she mentioned one of
her new patients is a 49 year old guy with no insurance. He is in the hospital
BUT, because of no insurance, they can't spring for a bottle of Humalog. After
we hung up, I called back to tell her of a program Eli Lilly has going. For any
NEW prescription for Humalog, a coupon is given (by the prescribing doc) which
gets the patient a FREE bottle! My doc is both a diabetic and an endocrinologist
so maybe she knows better than other docs. If anyone's doctor is unaware, either
you or the doc can call 1-800-345-5413. Of course, this doesn't apply only to
pumpers, but as a newbie to that group...

I found your
posting interesting and also a kind of entertaining. I think I may have spoken
of my 86 year old friend who said that after seeing the doctor he was told to be
careful because he was showing some sugar. No meds. Now he is asking all the
time.."is there sugar in that cookie? What is in there? (in a diabetic
household.) I have sugar diabetes you know.!! I don't want to lose my eyesite, I
could wake up tomorrow and be in big trouble." Ah,...how much do they want to be
sick to draw attention. Also, I was at a bridgeclub when one lady suddenly
started losing consciousness. I came over and her friend said that the lady was
a diabetic. I took her pulse and it was very fast. So I said we have to give her
something sugary she can consume right now, like a coke. Her friend placed
herself right in front of the lady and said loudly, "No-one touch her.!!! She
was ready to fight.!!! I explained that I was a diabetic and knew about these
things, but no way....The lady was out of it by the time the ambulance people
arrived. I told the man about the affair. He said, "Don't worry about it, we see
that all the time.!" Such is the life.!!!! JOHN.

GARY LARSON...I
had to chuckle at your comment regarding those poor, poor pitiful folks in your
trailer park. Several years ago, I stopped attending Diabetes Support Group
meetings for that very reason. On my last day, as it turned out, the leader
asked us to describe how diabetes had effected our lives. One woman stood and
smacked the table with anger, as she told us she not only had to switch from red
to white w(h)ine, but that she had to take a pill every day. After a little over
fifty years on needles, I'm finally pumping but I sure wouldn't have bitched if
I were "forced" to take a pill daily all those years:)

Oh Brother! If I
hear another "I'm a diabetic" story (where we live in the wintertime) I think
I'm gonna scream. We're in a retirement park and almost everyday I hear way more
than I want to. How the "walls are closing in because of my bad diabetes" or "my
eyes are getting blurry, I have to go get something to eat", or "my sugars are
so outta control, I had a 200 yesterday afternoon after our party" or "my
fasting is running close to 130 now"........All of these people are ones who
aren't on a thing for medication. A "low" isn't possible or is a 130 fasting the
end of the world! The parties continue on for them as well as the lifestyles of
the past. In the meantime, my 5 or 6 shots a day do create some lows that are
damn real and how I'd love to pass around the insulin just so others would get a
chance to experience it. The jokers would have a better understanding in no
time. Have a good weekend........Gary

be necessary toi nmaintain lean tissue? The ADA exchange book doesn't make this
necessary distinction. Hmmm! Soy protein and the protein in nut butters are
incomplete, so supplementation with essential aminos might be necessary. Any

Jeffery Wayman: Are you a
diabetic, type 1 or type 2. Caffeine has many different effects on the human
body. It has a strong effect on the central nervous system. It affects
digestion, metabolism, is a diuretic, can be used to manage acute circulatory
failure, treat headaches, be extremely habit forming, may overstimulate the
central nervous system and the sympathetic nervous system, can cause severe
gastrointestinal distress and use should be discourages for people having a
peptic ulcer. Caffeine is a recognized over the counter Anorexigenic. There was
also a note in a following paragraph that states that few if any OTC products
are proven to be more effective in losing weight than a balanced
calorie-restricted diet and appropriate exercise. Since caffeine is a drug, it
can have variable effects on existing medications being taken. Gordo from

AMY GUERRERO:
That depends on which type you have and whether you are in close control. I am
type 2 with no medications (diet and exercise only). Sometimes when reading
these posts, it almost seems like the type 1's have an easier management job but
I am sure that is not the only opinion. When I see these pumpers post about the
pump essentially eliminating their hypoglycemic lows and that they just adjust
their bolus for the food they consume, I tend to get a little envious. Most type
2's are from somewhat to greatly overweight. If you enjoy exercise, understand
nutrition and the body, type 2 is not difficult to control complications.
However, if you are one of those people that gains weight looking at certain
foods, do not have the self-discipline to learn and avoid the problem foods,
have bad knees, bad hips, bad heart, bad circulation, can not stick to a
schedule, cannot follow instructions, and many other variables we contend with,
pick another disease as we can't. I think most of us will agree that in one way
or another, each of us could have done a better job managing our disease. Many
of us have very good control for the present. This hasn't always been the case
nor is there a guarantee that it will remain that way. I also believe that most
of us will agree that the closer you control or manage this disease, the better
your life will be. This is why we do our best to closely control our diabetes.

a new leg ulcer was born. Yes it was.!!! I had 3 before and like people I guess
you can do more with 4 instead of 3. Like playing bridge or some other cardgame.
Must get boring to just sit there with the 3 of you. They progress in coming up
and then in leaving over about 16 weeks and then just stop improving, waiting
for an other day. Ah well, you get used to it like taking needles, what would I
do without them if suddenly I would not have to care about my 18 thingies I have
to do to stay alive on a daily basis (besides the ulcers.)......But alive I
am.!!!!! So will just have to accept having these ulcers until someone offers to
take them off my hands ( legs would be better.) Happy days to all especially

Hello, I am ready to leave the country.!!!!!!! What a mess it is outside.
The snow finally stopped sometime during the night. We must have gotten another
2 feet of the stuff. My husband has an old van in back of the house that he uses
for storage and with what snow was on the ground and what we got in this last
storm it is right to the topof it now. So you can see what kind of winter we
have had here in NH.----BS's for this mornings fasting was 80. I didn't take any
Regular insulin, only NPH. I have decreased that by 5 units this morning. Will
see how the numbers go before lunch and dinner. I tried to do the treadmill last
night. I set the time for 15 minutes. I knew I wouldn't be able to do that long.
I could only do 7 minutes. I will still go on it and do what I can. It will take
awhile to build back up to the hour that I use to do. I am not discouraged about
the 7 minutes. It is better than none!!!! When I go to the Dr. next Thursday, He
may tell me to stop the diet and exercising for now. I hope not. I am all
settled in to do the diet and exercise, and if I stop, it will be hard to get
back into it. Everyone have a great day. I'm going to even with the mesw
outside.

JCox, yes,
increasing insulin can cause weight gain. That is why watching our carbs and
exercising is important. (Listen to me, I don't exercise like I should!) But, I
don't worry so much about the possible weight gain as I do about hi BG's. Tight
control is the only way to prevent the complications that comes with this lovely
disease. That is way I went on the pump, was to get and try to maintain tighter
control. I'm about 20 lbs over what I would like to be at, but since I'm keeping
my A1C's in a relatively respectable range, I'm not worrying too much about the
weight.----------Faye, if I could I'd love to take you for a ride in my
convertable! I think I've forgotten how to drive in the snow though!
LOL----------Marc, it get's hot here, but not often in the 100's, some in late
July and August, but, I can always turn the air conditioner on!!! LOL Seriously,
the other day with the top (CAR TOP!), down, I turned the heater on! Hey, I'm
going to enjoy this car as long as I can, so there!!! Faithie!!

Faith... or
anyone else, you mentioned increasing your insulin after a BS of 161. A
question.... My endo warned me that increasing insulin dosage WOULD lower the BS
but ... it also caused weight gain. Since I run about 20 lbs too heavy now, I
surely don't need a bigger spare tire than I have. What's the reaction from
other Ds? Do any of you find that increasing insulin to control highs cause
weight gain? Trying to follow my docs advice, I struggle to keep the BS down
with diet and exercise, but I too, often inject a bit more insulin when I'm
having a series of highs. Thanks!
