stable:9.1-morning/8.5,afternoon/8.8 this evening. I'll be off-line for
awhile:between academy awards (Sunday,March 25th),plus I'll be away for this
rest of week in Kingston, combined diabetic confrence(Queen's University) and
lecture series at same. Lastly,I figure that it seemed a good idea for me(under
certain reasons) to take a rest from posting on the chat for a while. I will be
attending two diabetic classes:Toronto:Women's College Hospital Tridec Diabetic

Misty...I just got my Fed Ex from Minimed a little while ago. They sent me
Betadine for an IV Prep. I am not real sure why they switched me as I don't have
any rash problems, it was more a pain issue. I am curious what side effects your
trainer told you the IV Prep had? You put a dressing over the infusion? Do you
cut a hole in it, because your on the Silhuoette, right? I started taping the
edges down because of the lack of tape, that seems to be working. Get back to me
if you can regarding side effects, thanks....Marc W

Pumpers, do you
all use IV prep when using the pump? My trainer told me not to use because of
the side effects. I clean the skin really well with Hibiclens and after the
infusion is in I place a Polyskin dressing over it. It comes off easier then the
IV prep and leaves no irritation to my skin. Anyone else do this?

First off, both Faith and
Marc W. thank you for your input. I had to smile about Marc's kitchen sink, that
did cost me two days in the hospital....but I can take it, like other things I
have to take it seems. LOL. It is true I'm still fence sitting and may
forever??? Still all the good news I hear about the pump. Then again like Marc
said 5.9 is nothing to sneeze at. You can see the difficulty. In May I go on a
holiday to our Capital city to visit my son and family. Maybe then it will show
me more that the pump will be easier but I go away very little because of the
catherization. I have to do 18 medical things each day. At least I don't get
bored that way.--------------- On the lighter side; Kids opinion on musical

Faith...allow me to jump in. John, if I remember correctly had a 5.9 a1c so
he seems to be controlled well. John knows where to find us if he ever wants
info but from the many conversations I had with him he isn't interested yet. I
know it drove me crazy when everyone tried to convince me to go on the pump when
I wasn't ready. I guess what I am saying is it is obvious that John won't be a
convert yet. Maybe one day, but until then I think we should give the poor guy a
break. Trust me, I threw everything but the kitchen sink at him, he won't budge!
As for me, thanks for asking. Had a bit of trouble, Minimed wants me to switch
IV Preps they think it may be a reaction to the ones I use. Just little things,
but so far so good. The jury is in and I will only get 2 days even with the
Silhuoette, but as long as it's 2 quality days, I aint gonna go back to shots. I
was like John where they didn't bother me, until you go off them. Going back on
was such a pain in the butt. And how are you doing? Still getting a week I
presume? You know I am totally jealous (sp) CB... we sound totally opposite. If
I tried to squat a few hundred pounds I think my legs would break in half!....

JohnV- Mine main
reason for going on the pump WAS not because of the needles (4-5 a day). It was
to get better control. I'd always, from day one 32 years ago, been termed a
brittle diabetic. The pump has helped me keep it (diabetes) under better
control. The needles themselves didn't bother me, it was the fact they were not
doing the job. But now, I think the needles would bother me. But, as long as I'm
able to be on the pump, I plan to stay on it. From what you have posted in the
past, you sound like you are doing ok on your mulitple needles. That's great,
what works for one may not work for another.

In response to the post below, the
Atkins diet, even if followed correctly, does have dangers. The zone diet, also
mentioned, is more sensible, although it makes more sense to keep protein intake
lower. Having said that, the post does not address the nutritional needs of
bodybuilders. Some of us follow diets to put on muscle. Sports nutritionists
often recommend 1 gm/pound of bodyweight. Some diabetics cannot handle that, so
adjustments need to be made. Most weight-loss diets cause rapid muscle loss,
which slows the metabolism and creates a permanent weight problem. The Atkins
diet will not do this. Ideally, weight loss must concentrate on fat loss, not
muscle loss. This can be accomplished with both cardio-vascular and strength
training, meal timing, and proteins, fats, and carbs balanced to lose the fat.
One final comment about weight, two people weigh 175 pounds. The first has 20%
bodyfat, the other has 10%. At 10% bodyfat, not weight loss is necessary. At
20%, 17.5 lbs should be dropped. Sorry for the long post! CB

Most people have a fixed idea about having to get a needle. The innoculation
needles given during childhood and the flu shot brings up an scary picture of
having to take needles all the time. Maybe it is strange but when I go for my
flu shot I don't like the idea to some degree. Yet I think nothing of taking 6
needles per day for diabetes. 6 or 10 or 15 who cares......most of the time you
will not notice any pain or discomfort, except for the occational time when you
happen to inject right into the middle of a nerve. That makes you sit up and pay
attention. But that being soooo seldom it should not get the attention it gets.
The reason I'm not on the pump is of course the $ 5000. cost but also because
the needles don't bother me. I'm told that the only time I will really know the
difference is when I'm on the pump. That is a fair statement. Regarding the
short and the half-inch in lenght needle I find the short one somewhat
misleading. What they don't tell you that the short one is definitely thicker
than the half-inch one. It's on the box to see. I prefer the longer one, slides
in better. JOHN V.

-- The American Heart
Association has drafted an advisory paper warning the public about what it says
are the dangers of high-protein diets. "They put people at risk for heart
disease and we're really concerned about that," said Dr. Robert H. Eckel, senior
author of the paper. "Long-term, the saturated fat and cholesterol content of
the diet will raise the ... bad cholesterol and increase the risk for
cardiovascular disease, particularly heart attacks." Proponents of high-protein,
low-carbohydrate diets, such as the Atkins diet, promote them as a way of
helping people lose weight and lower their cholesterol while letting them eat
unlimited amounts of red meat and high-fat dairy products. RESOURCES The
American Heart Association has guidelines for heart-healthy eating Critics of
high-protein diets acknowledge that people do indeed lose weight, at least
temporarily, and as a result, cholesterol does drop -- again, temporarily. "But
what I see after people have lost weight on such a diet, then their weight
stabilizes for a period of weeks or months and often the cholesterol,
particularly the bad cholesterol, now becomes more elevated," said Eckel,
professor of medicine at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. He
said he has seen patients whose levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), the
so-called bad cholesterol, have risen from 140 mg/dL to 220 mg/dL after they
lost weight on a high-protein diet. Any level over 130 mg/dL is considered
dangerous. "That's an exaggerated case, but many people's LDL cholesterol goes
up if they remain on the diet after they've successfully lost the weight," Eckel
said. Eckel is chairman of the AHA's Nutrition Committee, which is writing the
advisory paper. He said the paper will be submitted to Circulation, the
association's journal, to be used as guidance for doctors advising patients. The
committee reviewed five high-protein diets: the Atkins diet, the Zone, Protein
Power, Sugar Busters and the Stillman diet. According to Eckel, Protein Power
has the highest fat content, with 54 percent of total calories from fat. Atkins
has the next highest, with 53 percent, and Stillman, the Zone and Sugar Busters
have 33 percent, 30 percent and 21 percent respectively. Colette Heimowitz,
director of education and research for Atkins Health and Medical Information
Services, said if LDL cholesterol increases after weight loss on the Atkins
diet, it is because people aren't following the diet correctly. Heimowitz said
some people put too many carbohydrates back into their diets after the two-week
induction phase, rather than increase them slowly. "If someone were to go on the
induction phase, which is the first phase of the diet, and go back to the old
way of eating, which is a high-carbohydrate diet, yes, they will gain their
weight back and their cholesterol may go up," she said. She also said the Atkins
diet doesn't advocate eating only red meat and dairy products -- it also tells
people to eat chicken, fish and tofu, too. At Tuesday's annual meeting of the
American College of Cardiology in Orlando, Dr. Robert Atkins is scheduled to
debate his dietary nemesis, Dr. Dean Ornish, who advocates a low-fat diet.
Sparks have flown before when the two doctors have debated -- once at a forum
sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and again at a meeting of the
American Dietetic Association -- but their discussion is expected to be
particularly acrimonious when the issue is heart disease. Many nutritionists and
cardiologists have become bitter over the popularity of Dr. Atkins's diet. "You
want my response to Atkins' saying that [his diet] can lower your cholesterol
and do all sorts of good things for your heart? You know what my response is?
Bull----," said Judith Stern, professor of nutrition and internal medicine at
the University of California at Davis.

down a flight of 25 stairs (with my mother-because of a fire alarm. The noise (I
have a hearing loss) was intolerable. I was asking a fair question to the post

except when I see that people don't know what they are talking about. SNAPPLE is
an Australian Apple juice first invented by the early aborigines when apples
still did grow in the outback. When the British came in the Abors knew of the
secret workings of this particular drink and offered it to the Brits, who
promply engaged in snickersnee. Some of you may not be familiar with snickersnee
but it means a fight with knives. So they all knived each other and the Abors
could keep them out of the outback for a long time, simply by serving SNAPPLE. I
hope this has cleared-up the mystery surrounding Snapple and hope you can now
continue entertaining me with your postings. Thank you.

Hi Marc W,Misty,Jim,John V,CB,etc. what a good feeling I now have
today:tested bs it is at 7.4. (non-fasting) I feel very pleased. I am back on
track with this "D". I am going back to a severe (for now, till bs and weight
under control) food intake. Trying to stay away from butter. Will have
half-portions when I eat. I'll try to (when I'm out) ask how everything is
prepared. Gordo, thanks for your advice. It helps me. Marc W.,many thanks for
your forceful approach. It has helped me turn this around. I realize that I have
along way to go. I'll try to avoid feeling sorry for my "D",or too much guilt
about past wrong eating habbits-they don't work. Marc Bernstein. Oh about
Glucophage:Yes,I know about the warning:my doctor has told me it is one of the
safest drugs for my diabetes.

Alberto- Just the side
effects like diarreah (sp) etc, but the biggest thing is a possible side effect
called Lactic Acidosis, which can be fatal. Now, with that said, I brought that
concern up with my doctor and he said that it is merely a POTENTIAL side effect,
and that he doesn't believe that there has been any documented cases in the
states. He used to practice in Canada, and he said Glucophage has been on the
market for years up there, and he never saw one case of it.

Hello again, Hey Bambi,
good to be back on the chat. I guess it has been a year or so since we had the
weight loss challenge. I have done pretty well, but not the best. Been travelling
alot and walking every day. I Florida we did 5 miles on the beach. Walking at
home in the neighborhood is for the pits and seems like work rather than a fun
workout. How are you doing?

This disease is pretty scary, but most people believe it won't happen to them.
They are the ones that scream WHY when it happens to them. I know I was screamin
it pretty loud when it happened to me. I think that's why people like us who
have tasted what this can and will do tend to be more straight forward and blunt
with what we say. Glad we cleared up any potential misunderstanding. Take it

learned from the past board what happens when we try to argue or reason with the
"mad" AP/APs? While your intentions may kind and sincere in nature, it only
furthers their resolve in disrupting this place. Just a thought, Jim.

8.9. While this improvement,I can't afford to return to bad habbits again. I'm

turn be better. I'm shocked what has happened. Recall when first diagnosed,I was

half measures. will see my doctor Monday. spend time speaking to him:show him
