Gordo,I believe the serving size of the plate that I had out last night for dinner:one large plate. Here is a list of what was in it:brown rice, stewed tomatoes, stewed eggplant,(slices) black olives,(greek-didn't eat,too oily) pine nuts (less than 8) that's all. It was very spicy(they said it had "Kofka-"(some kind of hot middle-eastern spice) I only was able eat half of it. It was too much for me. Perhaps in future,I will try to order half servings when out? ask for somethings on the side? I'll look for a scale this week. I'll ask my diabetic dietician this Wednesday, when I see her. Gordo: An excellent post as usual. May I add that the fiber in veggies slows down their effect on blood sugar? It makes great sense to use dietary carbs for veggies, especially RAW. Once again, I need to say that if carbs are a serious problem, green "superfoods" low in calories but extremely high in nutrients is the way to go. Marc B. Goat milk is a bit stronger and richer than 1%. 8% with a scoop of protein powder and fruit is a convenient meal replacement. Of course, do the two hour after meal bs check to see how you handle it.

Marc B. I looked at the food that you ate and on the face of it, I am confused. I am not a cook but I do know that many of the things added to base foods greatly increase the Carbhydrates and the sugars. 1 cup of boiled eggplant has about 5 grams of Carbohydrate and 2.79 grams of total sugar. 1/2 cup of long grain brown rice cooked has 22.4 grams of Carbohydrate and 0.3 grams of total sugar. 1/2 cup of Hunts stewed tomatoes has 7.3 grams of carbohydrates including 5.7 grams of sugar. I don't know what else they used in these foods but as shown, they don't seem that bad unless they add other things not listed. You did not mention serving size. Serving size is critical for glucose management. Buy a $10 postal scale and measure your serving sizes for a while until you can look at a serving and decide how much of it you must leave on your plate. This was especially difficult for me being a depression baby and taught to cleanup my plate. Know how food is prepared or avoid eating at that place until you know. Obtain an inexpensive nutrient software and do your own selection of what foods you can tolerate successfully. I don't know where you can find the software I am talking about but it is essential for your own education. The one I have is too expensive but very good. Maybe your nutritionist can advise you. The cupcake is even bad to look at. I believe that diabetics, especially type 2 can obtain some of the carbs by osmosis through the eyeballs. Or at least that is the way it seems. Gordo

Marc B... About milk.....if you can fit the fats in, try GOAT milk. Kids who have trouble handling cow's milk often drink it. Goat milk yogurt (plain) has a mild taste. I put frozen blueberries in mine sometimes. About the leg pains. Muscle atrophy can cause what you described about the leg pain. If you are on a low protein diet, ask about amino acids and glutamine (also an amino) to "beef" up the proteins you take. If your care team oks an increase in dietary protein, there are shakes out there with 3-6 gms/carbs. Just a thought Marc. CB

MARC B: I'm going to try and point some things out to you. I am not trying to be unkind. I just feel that there are some things you need to be aware of. You need to train yourself to read labels. If it ends in OSE it's sugar. Dextroxe, sucrose, maltose, and yes even fructose is a form of sugar. The advertising people come up with such clever ways to hide what is actually in their product. A cute one that caught me was Sugar Alcohol. It is used in a very well known brand of "Sugar Free" pancake syrup. So your yogurt is not really that "OK". You need to learn about natural sugars in foods. Most of what was in the dinner you had was not only high in carbs but high in natural sugars. When you say that you only eat a sweet once in a while you are only kidding your self. You are the one who is going to pay for it, no one else is going to regardless of how good your "REASONS" are. MARC I say all of these things in a sincere desire to help you, not to up set you or in any way hinder your progress. Herb (Bear)

RULES OR GUIDELINES FOR DIABETICS. This is a repeat and is put on for those starting or on the go with diabetes and not sticking to the rules! You may not feel anything now but it sure as hell will get you later. Diabetes will give you time to live, underwhat circumstances, is up to how you control your diabetes right FROM THE START!! A good life can be had, having diabetes!!!!! That is really true, it is an opportunity that will give you a good diet to live by, preventing heart disease, preventing to be overweight and because you are forced to do your excersize you will remain slim or slimmer than you would be, if you carried on the old way.---------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------- There are some "IF's" attached to this. Nothing comes without effort. You will ALWAYS have to stick to diet, you will ALWAYS have to take your medication at THE SAME TIME, you will ALWAYS have to do your exercize, you will ALWAYS have to test your BLOODSUGAR so that you know you stay as much as possible where you want to be.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Now here is something you don't want to hear! No matter how well you stick to the rules you will run into regular disappoinments, to the point that you may want to pull the hair out of your head, because good adherance to the rules doesn't ALWAYS results into good control of your diabetes. On the other hand, if you decide NOT to follow the rules you will run into complications of diabetes that could shorten your life. It could blind you, kidney failure will make you have to experience dialysis, you could lose toes, feet and yes even legs! I could go on and on , but look at it this way, where ever you blood flows to, trouble can occur.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So to come to an end here,..... if you stick to the rules your life can be a pleasant experience in spite of disappointments, and you will avoid all or most of the complications.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- See it as an opportunity for healthy living, and discipline in your everyday life. A big chance to live longer and better than you would possibly have had without it!------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The very best for you from, JOHN V. It seems to me that I have sent this to you at one time, It requires that you put in the effort to help yourself by paying the attention needed.

Marc B... I am sorry for what has taken place in your life. But I need to say this, your body can care less whatever reasoning you have for doing something. Your body only cares about what food is put in it and what medications and exercise you give it to deal with it. It can care less if you were celebrating something and had dessert, it only cares that it now gets to deal with that dessert. All of us here think diabetes is a bitch to live with, anyone who doesn't must be on drugs. But from what I read you say you want to do the right things, then you follow those posts up with reasons why you don't. Sorry for being blunt, but reasons are excuses, and diabetes will attack you and attack you and if all you have is reasons you will lose the war. You need to stop telling yourself and US why you did this and did that and flat out stop doing those things. If your worried about your blood sugar levels and cake makes your blood sugar go up, you then need the self control to realize you are different, you just can't eat something because someone else does or your celebrating and NOT expect a bad result. No offense at this Marc, but you need a reality check to this disease. Look around here, read about those less fortunate, look at their prices they paid and realize that diabetes cares only about itself, not reasons or excuses. Take it easy.....Marc W

Marc W.,I do recognize that my diabetes forces to me to be more careful about what I eat. I do not often have desserts with my family on outings together. Neither am I in any sort of denial about this "D". This is my observation:I have been a type 2 diabetic since October 1990. Obviously I have had to show some form of diabetic control over the years, otherwise my condition would be much worse. After seeing a noted diabetic specialist in Toronto (who is also an outstanding dietician) she told me that an occassional dessert can be allowed for me. She believes that if my sugar (after testing is ok,then I can relax every now and then.) We were actually celebrating:my niece has melanoma. Which has been in remission for years. Also, almost 3 years ago,my sister had diverticulitus...she had been in hospital,+ on IV,and nearly died-(she went into shock because of allergic reaction to several IV drugs) What has this to do with my diabetes? Well, last night we celebrated the fact that my tests were obviously ok,since my doctor had told me last week if I didn't hear from him by Friday, then my glucose tests were ok. Also, since being a diabetic affects my everyday life,I really am happy that my family continues to be ok. I don't know if you are aware of this:I was born with a medical condition: Klippel Feil Syndrome,(curvature of spine-fused vertibre end of spine) plus vertigo.. I was born with a minor perceptual disability, which I have been able to mostly overcome.. All these extra things tend to make being diabetes more of a struggle for me. I do what I can to be aware of my diabetic limitations. Thanks. Marc Bernstein.

CB:My doctor has me on Monopril. It is an ace inhibitor. For protecting my kidneys from further protein damage. Salt intake has to be limited too. Have been on Monopril since 1994. Recently he has increased dose to 2 mlgrm a day. (in morning) Had yearly exam last Tuesday-did not hear back about results yet.

Question for Marc Bernstein...Your doc doesn't have you on an ace inhibitor for proteinuria? I have heard that Glucophage is sometimes recommended for proteinuria. Is that true?

Hi Anita... welcome back. Yes this is the new format, and it stinks. They said it was a work in progress so we can hold onto hope that they will fix it. What a pain to read it this way. Marc B and anyone who is asking that same question. Are you welcomed here? Do you offer advise that helps others or do you take advise that helps yourself? If you answer yes than obviously you are. That is what this place is about. If someone takes issue with your style of posting, maybe refine it. I have several times. The bottom line, I have stuck around so long because I have a lot to offer in the way of helping, and I always need to receive help. Who really cares about the rest. CYA....Marc W

Hi yall, Good morning to all, hope it is brighter than the yukky old rain and humidity here, but Hey, thank God at least it isn't cold. I forgot, yesterday, to put a space between sentences so it wouldn't all run together. Had been off her too long. So good to see so many old familiar names. Bambi, i had mystery lady until my new computer, old one finally went belly up and had been upgraded so much that if it had been face lifts, it's belly button would be on its forehead. Lost her when changed after last crash on old one. Thanks again, Gordo, for yelling at me that this site was back on, am as usual busy busy. Have 36 young people working in a Junior Auxiliary at the hospital now, donating 2 hours a week with hospitality table and visitation, they even make homemade cards for individual patients and I think it is great for both patient and kids. I am trying for some federal grants now to help finish up the local 9 acre park we are building. "Ol Tyme Kountry Korral", and I have organized a local group of rail road aawareness after losing 2 more friends this year to train wrecks here In our lil town. Jerry will be retiring next year, and we are going to run around the USA hopefully fishing in every state, and I am taking one more ED. trip in 2002. Back to south sea tour, Hawaii, Aus., and New Zealand. Rough work but someone's gotta do it, lol. Nope to the newbee's, I am not wealthy, hey I am a retired Arkansas Teacher, worked 28 years before I made the $20,000 a year salary mark. But, I am local tour director for these trips and If I get so many to go, my way is free or at least discounted and I have loved doing it for the last 10 years. Long post, but lots of months to catch up on. Nuff about my update, hey dear friends, what has been going on with you update me here or in email. Diabetic related, well every blooming thing we do is diabetic related and some of the activities are what have helped get me back in control even if I do have to take 6 shots a day. Am still on the humalog, and the humulin ultra lente. But, thank God again, no imitrex shots or pills for over a year now. Love yall, and have a good weekend, Anita aka hotpink.

Marc W.,Re:Glucophage-yes,it Can cause stomach problems. Have been on it since 1995;it can (and has caused me) cramps, stomach pain, even ulcer related attacks. I take immodium to ease the cramps. Yeah,it has lowered blood sugars. I'm told that for me,it was last oral diabetic that could work. I have been on Diabeta-almost since first diagnosed with "D". I probably take the limit of drug. Sometimes combo of all drugs sides effects are bad. I hope bs can continue to come down. Tonight my blood sugar was 7.9. (non-fasting) I'd like to not have to take so many drugs. wish I were able to control "D" without so many oral diabetic pills.

On subject of Glucophase(Metformin) Have been on it since November 1995. Yes,it can cause weight gain. (Eating at night is part of the problem for me-Glucophase does make one less hungry. ( My experience with it) Wonder why my doctor added extra Avandia?) Currently seem to have leg problems-if I walk too hard or too much,my legs (and back feel like flame.) Wish the protein in urine would improve. This is diabetic-related:Since I'm the onlyn projectionist in my company that is a diabetic, worried about my job's future. My company(Famous Players Theatres Canada) has been cutting jobs..they know I'm a diabetic...worried they might wish to replace me. Concerned about how diabetes might affect my job-esp in the future. Wonder if I should test my bs when I'm working?

Marc W.,Thank you for your comments. I understand your view. Will not ever get you involved again. Will try to make sure I stick to diabetes-related issues on the chat. Sorry I seem to have angered people. It seems that (from the time I first went on last year(only my own personal view,no one need comment,I'm not asking for anything anymore) I feel not welcome here. Correct me if I'm wrong,or don't,I do not care. Marc Bernstein.
